I know that this question might still somewhat up in the air with SCCA rally transitioning to Rally America, but it is something that I think is worth asking about now anyway. Here it goes.

In the SCCA 2004 rally rulebook, it says that all competitors competing (and have completed) a ProRally event will be issued an FIA-Rally only license. I am assuming that this will still happen after the transition to Rally America?? I am just curious at this point because I am getting started in rally and would like to know what is down the road. If it is not going to be possible to get an FIA license, then how does one go about it?

Next question: Slightly related and purely for informational reasons, an FIA license will allow you to compete in any FIA sanctioned event - even internationally, Right??

Big questions I know - especially from basically what amounts to a rookie driver, but one has to have goals.

Thanks in advance.

Well, starting out you would get a Club license. With the SCCA, you showed up, sat through a 2-hour course on the basics of how a rally works and were given a temporary license. If you liked it, you sent in your $75 and had it made perminent. Then, as you completed more rallys and finished higher in the order, eventually you could qualify for a Pro lisence. The FIA rule is basically saying if you have a FIA lisence, you can run with it.

Does any of this matter any more? stay tuned. RA is accepting SCCA lisences for next year. other then that, there is talk of having more schooling required to get a Club lisence. Just wait and see.

I trimmed your quote - hope you don't mind.

First off, you won't be _issued_ an FIA rally license just because you competed in a ProRally (now National Rally) event. You have to apply for it and do the medical, get the photos, and pay for it. It's basically another license on top of your national rally license. Cost is about $200.

You can get an FIA license via SCCA, USAC/NASA Rally, and probably via RallyAmerica.

The license you will be granted will be a Rally-only International C. This will allow you to enter any FIA-sanctioned Rally on the International Sporting Calendar or any FIA-sanctioned National Event with Authorized Foreign Participation.

Basically, these events are:
WRC
European Rally Championship
APRC
Middle East Championship

You do _NOT_ need an FIA International license to enter any FIA-listed event in the US or Canada (unless it's on the International calendar). Nor should you use an International license to enter a national event in a foreign country. (If the organizers are on the ball, they won't let you.)

Hope this helps,
- Christian
