View Full Version : Quicky wire placement question....

This may come as a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyways. So I bought some wires from knuconceptz.com and will be putting them in soon. I know it's a good idea to put power wires on one side and speaker wires on the other.

I already have my power wire (4 guage) and my grounds on the driver side and my RCA cables on the passenger side. Now the speaker wires, so I put on the driver or passenger side? They are considered power wires, right?

My second question.... Do you think I overkilled on my speaker wires? I ordered some 12 guage wires to hook up my amp (Alpine MRV-430 Bridged 2 channel x 100 watts 4 ohms) to my headunit? I didn't know they were going to be this thick. The headunit wires are probably 18 or even 22 guage. Do you think it's going to even make a difference if I put in 12 guage vs. say 16 or 18 guage?

Third Question.... What is better to improve on: Better RCA cables or thicker speaker wires? Before I knew about knuconceptz, I bought this rather expensive (WAY OVERPRICED) set of Tsunami Twisted cable RCAs from Circuit City LINK (http://www.autotoys.com/x/catalog/TSUNAMI_RCA_MINI_SERIES_TWISTED_PAIR_RCA_CABLES_IN _ALL_LENGTHS_p_2783.html) . They seem sort of on the thin side, but since they were expensive, I thought they were "good." Would it be worth it to uprade? I have a pair of Infinity Kappas 60.5CS.

Thanks as usual! :alien:

Starting backwards, I don't think it is worth your time to upgrade your RCAs unless you are getting engine noise induced into your system. Even then I would focus on fixing that in other ways.

I personally don't think 12ga is overkill. Considering price difference, I am not sure it is worth it over 14ga wire (not always a common size for places like Knu). I really feel that 16ga is on the small side, but numbers would suggest that it would work. But 18ga is too small IMO.

As for which side, is it possible for you to maybe run them back up the middle To be honest I think you have a chance to be safe on either side. The biggest thing is to not run the RCAs with the power or ground wire, and the speaker wires don't quite count for power. My preference personally has always been to run power on one side of the tranny hump, RCAs on the other, and the speaker wires along each appropriate side. But I say if you aren't looking to rewire everything to run the speaker wires along the same side as the RCAs.

Thanks for your response offset. Since I already bought the 12 guage speaker wires, I'm just going to keep them. As for connecting them to the headunit harness, what would you recommend to connect the 12guage wires with? Quick connects or those cap thingys you crimp?

I have the two sets of wires (RCA/cable) on each side of the sills. With the 12 guage wires now, that might be a problem since all 4 wires are twisted into one big strand making it extremely thick. The diameter is thicker then a 0 gugage power wire. I might have to use the Tranny hump. So do you run the speaker wires with your RCA cables?

Since you know what you're talking about offset, I'll shoot another question..

I will be reinstalling my basslink in my trunk as circuit city did a horrendous job installing it. They basically drilled straight through my wheel well to use a ground point. So my question is this... should i ground the basslink and the amp to the same point? There are two bolts, one on each side of the trunk near the seat. I was thinking of using one for the basslink and one for the amp. If I bolted both to the same bolt, one ground wire would be rather long, which I don't want. I'm just afraid of ground loops.

Thanks for your pearls of wisdom! :alien:

LOL, don't be so sure of that. Actually wait and see some other opinions as it is wayyyy past my bedtime and I am having enough trouble typing, let alone thinking. For some reason I am thinking I said it backwards earlier as to what I would settle for. Run the speaker and power together, but I think you can have them pretty well seperated under the sill and carpet from each other.

And I vote to keep the ground wires as short as possible. I need to shut up know before I make any more mistakes
