View Full Version : Took the Cobra to the track

Hey guys, just got back from the track. This is the first time I've ever taken this car to the track.. so I was a newb. It was a pretty good night. Had a couple of Cobra's out there, and it was hooking pretty good.

My mods are: 2.80 pulley, Kook's LTs, H-Pipe with cats, Bassani catback, K&N FIPK and Revolution tuned by Strictly Performance.

Ran a total of 3 passes. Car weighed in at 3974lbs with me in it. Man that's a fat bastard.

Best pass of the night:

60' - 1.701
1/8 - 7.563 @ 93.97mph
1/4 - 11.739 @ 118.52mph

These were done on Nitto 315/35/17 DRs. With that sixty, as soon as I left the line, the hood lifted, the tires hopped for a split second and I was off. I think if it got a perfect hook I would have netted a 1.69. That would have been awesome on my first time out.

The other two passes were 12.1 @ 118mph.. 2.0 sixty footers. I bogged the first one cause I didn't think it would hook very well.. and boy did it hook. The last one I got too greedy and tried to launch 400RPMs higher than the 1.70 sixty and spun hard.

My MPH does seem a little low.. I was seeing other people's times and they are hitting in the 120+ range with the same mods. Then again, I did mix half 104 oct. just for safety but I only have 18deg. of advance in the tune, so it was probably running too rich cause it couldn't burn the fuel in the top end. I'm also told I need to powershift in order to gain another 3-4mph. This was my first time out, and my sixty foot was insane!

Cool down time between runs wasn't all that long.. at most it was 20 minutes. The eaton was warm to touch but nowhere near cool. My shifting response was nice and intact and I was speedshifting through the gears but still lifting the throttle, and I could feel the front end dip a little between shifts.

I'm going catless tomorrow and will go back to the track this weekend so I can pull some low 11s with better driving and more cool down time.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Time for more boost!

Right now, with the 2.80 and the long tubes, I'm seeing about 13psi. I'm about to jack it back up to 15-16psi now and see what happens. My RWHP shouldn't go up too much.. but I should gain a good 30-40ft/lbs of torque. Just what I need to get this boat on the road :)

Cool car and nice numbers especially for how heavy it is. Must be some serious power.

depends on the year and trim... many saleens are more or less appearance packages.

There should still be some power to be made with your car. I saw a black 03' Cobra with intake/exhaust/pulley/chip running low 12s at 121mph w/ 2.0 60ft's sitting on 18" FIKSE's with street radials.

Yep, I know this. I was talking to my tuner and he said that I didn't give it nearly enough cool down time between runs.

Also, what size pulley is he running? I'm running the 13-14psi one.. he might be running the 14-15psi one or even have a lower/upper pulley combo which makes about 50-60trq more than just an upper.

Also, remember the harder you hook the slow your MPH is, but faster your ET is. I agree though that I should be around 120-122mph traps.

03-04 Cobra's are fun.

Now toss that stupid Eaton Supercharger and put a Kenne Bell Blowzilla on there.

that cobra sounds sweeetttt...it was a toss-up between the evo and cobra and the AWD of winter driving and auto xing made the desicion.....im happy with the evo and am trapping in the low 122mph range, but i woudl love to go to the dyno and make 600whp......

Not true- that should read "many Saleens are more or less suspension packages."
Most of those that are just appearance packages probably aren't real Saleens.

I do wholeheartedly agree w/ your "depends on year and trim" comment though! :D

I love big cubes and superchargers. Turbos are cool and fun, but there is NO replacement for displacement. Last time I was at the track some dude in a Viper was running high 11s all evening.. his car launched hard and fast but he shut it down half way down the track each time. We noticed that familiar whistle of a turbo charger or two. His last run of the night he ran a mid 10.. they threw him off for not having a roll cage.

My bros S351 Saleen with an exhaust and 18" drag radials ran high 11's @ 126 mph.

With a better driver and traction it will run low 11's the way it sits.

Yeah but the S351 is like close to $100k. I've only ever seen two.. one new body and one SN95 bodystyle. But those things haul ass.

I think he might have been refering to the supercharged S281.. which traps around 114mph stock. It's like a stock Cobra pretty much, just $20k more.

With a trap speed of 126mph that should go 10's easy with slicks. My wife has a SN95 with a 347 S/C via a Novi 2000 on 13psi. With her hydrolic cam in she was running a 10.38 @ 132, now she has a solid lifter cam with a .700+ lift and shes running mid to high 9's. She has yet to get her cage certified and doesnt have her competition license yet. So she just did a half a** launch with her trans brake and let off at the end and ran a 10.22@ 136 with a 1.43 60 ft.

Your Cobra can be very lethal if you mod it and drive it right!!!

I just saw one get dyno'd the other day. First pass was at 20deg. of advance, dead rich, well below 10:1, put down 555hp, 514trq. Next pass, in some areas it came to 10.5:1 and the rest were rich, it put down 567hp. Then Richard at Strictly brought the entire graph up to 10.5:1 across the board, and it put down 581hp, 533trq. Cobra's like to run in the 11.7-12:1 range, so that was definately over 600whp when he's done with it. That's only at 18psi of boost, pump gas.

Jesus, you ran 11's without getting booted off the track? That's awesome dude, it must be sort of ironic to spend so much cash and time and effort and sweat on a WRX then go to a Cobra and have it come to you with SOOO few mods.

Awesome 60's, one of a few truly great drivers on these boards :)

Great times Big Turkey!

I went 1.9 60' 11.9 @ 123.8mph with a failing clutch on balding F1's street tires.

So new clutch, Nitto 315's DR, I'm looking for low 11's next spring.
