I'm wondering whether I'm going to have problems with this setup. I am using a WRX Hydra in my 02, a EJ257 engine, with WRX-style camshafts. If I drill / tap the WRX sensor on the STi head, I'll be okay "Reference" and "Sync" wise, correct? Phil? Someone?
I've read the Element Tuning thread regarding installing a EJ257 in a WRX, that's why I *think* I'll be okay.

Steve,
You will not have to tap or drill anything since you are using the WRX heads where the cam position sensor boss already accepts the WRX cam position sensor. The article on www.elementtuning.com is for a complete STI long block into a WRX so there are some differences.
Make sure you talk to people that have performed this swap and make sure you have the correct head gasket. While your proposed setup will work well you should consider upgrading the cams to STI (or more aggressive) and using the springs and buckets from the STI. It's a little more expensive this way but your heads will be apart to perform the swap anyway saving you in the long run.
The engine management will work perfectly with that combination but your ignition curve and knock setting will change some.

Maybe I should clarify.... :lol:
I'm using ported EJ257 STi heads with Crower WRX camshafts on a EJ257 shortblock. Given that the Crowers do not allow AVCS, the only modification I should make is tapping the Sensor boss on the STi head. Right?
This is the guy in Alabama you sent the Hydra to....I hope you were aware of my setup. :lol: Otherwise, pack a bag. :lol:

LOL! Now I know who you are. Just mount the sensor but make sure to leave the AVCS oil lines intact. Everything else should be good to go.

I would like to use V8 heads and cams in a USDM sti. Will the hydra allow the use of the AVS?

I honestly can't answer that question definitely for you but from what I understand certain JDM heads do not use the same AVCS cam position sensors as the US STI (I believe one is a hall effect and the other is not). So if you use JDM heads (older) that used a cam sprocket sensor for ignition timing and AVCS sensors for cam timing then most likely these will not work.
If you use a JDM head that only uses the cam position sensors on the back of the heads for both ignition timing and AVCS then yes it will control you AVCS appropriately.

OK I think I got you there. I wonder would using the AVS sensor from the USDM sti in the JDM V8 head get around that. Then the only question would be are the trigers on the cam in the same spot. I cant see that they would use a different blank between the two markets.
Also could you drop me a pm on how I could go about getting on the list for a hydra

They are.
They did. The USDM STi camshafts are tubular is design, with the cam lobes pressed onto the billet. The AVCS timing is picked up differently. HTH
