I am trying to tune my car myself cause I have no access neither to a tuner nor an AWD Dyno around here. So I'm trying to figure out something myself. Here's a log. I know that the tune I've done is too rough. Please make your comments.

And what's the question? It's a fine log. Looks nicely formatted, etc :)

Off the top of my head:

You're leaning out like crazy in the 10 load column around 2000-3000 RPM. Then a dip, then it leans out again from 3250 to 4000 in the 20-40 columns. Smooth that out and keep it reasonable (13:1 or so from 0PSI maybe?)

Then it goes pretty rich even though you're not running much boost. Your mod list says 21psi, but you never get out of the 17s. Why so little boost? Was the car tuned for 21 psi?

The knock count looks like a phantom. Is it consistent? The ECU doesn't _seem_ to have noticed it, or if it did, it noticed a knock later than the UTEC did. Did you change the knock thresholds in the UTEC parameters? It looks like you changed the Knock retard and made it 16 degrees? That's nuts. It drops from 23 to 7 degrees on a single knock count. You'll feel that as a major hesitation any time it picks up a hint of knock. Have you had severe detonation problems, or is there another reason your knock control is so twitchy?

Looks like ya knocked from too much timing. Ya might wanna try to remove a degree at 55-5700. Your a/f ratio is all over the place in the 10-20% columns. I dunno what you're shooting for, but if the a/f ratio at 3500rpm in the 30% column is 14.6 to 1, the 20% column below that shouldn't be richer(at least not as much as it is). If the a/f ratio goes leaner then 14.7 to 1(which it does in some areas), you will lose a good amount of power......

Your timing doesn't need to drop down so quickly. It seems like your timing map has been adjusted totally by rpm and not by load. I mean, you shouldn't be using the base stage 4 map with your turbo...... The timing dips down too quick, and you end up losing a lot of power. If you advanced the timing more in areas where your turbo never gets boost, you would make more power at hard throttle when in those areas. Imagine that in the highest gear ya ever push the car on the coldest day of the year, you never get more then 6psi below 3000rpm(or 3500 even). You can easily have the 10 and 20% loads timing at 30ish degrees since ya know the turbo won't spool so quick in those areas and the timing won't need to drop that quick.

Imagine at 3500rpm where the load goes to 30%(around 6psi) your timing could be dropping from 30 degrees in the 20% to 27 in the 30% instead of being at 16 degrees like it is. Then 24 in the 40%, 21 in the 50, 18 in the 60..... Usually it's better to have higher or equal timing values in lower load sites as in higher ones. In higher rpm areas where the turbo spools quicker, it's better to have more retarded timing in lower load columns(compared to in lower rpm areas where the turbo doesn't spool so quick) so the timing doesn't drop so quick or jump up and down so much during a hard shift.......

I thought i would run 21 psi after i have some decent A/F ratio.

The timing is low in the lower rpm zone, I thought it would help spool up by high egt numbers.

The knock seems to be fake. I just once had that knock at that point. My knock thresholds are stock.

Thanks a lot for your suggestions, i'm sure they'll help a lot. I will try to develop my map along your suggestions and post a new log in a few hours.

My First question is about the last line of the log. I lowered the boost value from 210 to 150 at the last line and the boost increased from 17.8 to 18.4. Also boost pressures are not constant, how can i make them go more linear? With a external wastegate perhaps ?

Another question is this one: 1623, +0.4,2.1, 69, 10, 00, 12.9,+25.2, 5.1,+30.0, +1.9,300.00,2.1, 13.77

Last question:
Sometimes my rpm is decreasing where it should be increasing, like this: 1705, +0.6,2.1, 68, 10, 00, 14.8,+16.3, 6.6,+30.0, +2.0,300.00,2.1, 14.4

1607, +0.8,2.2, 70, 10, 00, 15.3,+30.8, 7.2,+30.0, +2.0,300.00,2.0, 14.85
1632, +0.8,2.2, 70, 10, 00, 14.6,+29.5, 7.3,+30.0, +2.0,300.00,2.0, 14.77
1721, +1.0,2.3, 71, 10, 00, 14.2,+29.4, 6.4,+30.0, +2.0,300.00,2.1, 14.26 Why is that ?

Thanks in advance guys. I really need help.

1) It doesn't look like a boost creep problem. I think the lowest number you're supposed to use in a closed loop boost map is 200. 210 isn't a big difference then 200, you took your foot off the throttle, and it happened so quick that the turbo didn't have time to control the boost(at least it looks like that to me). Not saying that you don't have boost creep:)... If you want lower boost at higher rpms, ya might wanna try closing your abc more and using higher numbers at lower rpms. That lets ya use lower numbers at higher rpms. If ya want the boost to start tapering off at 6500.

2)I dunno, I'd have to see your fueling map. It probably has something to do with the values at 1500 and 1750rpm

3)From what I've been told, it's cause the utec's main priority is not logging. When it's working harder doing certain things, the log suffers a little.

Like I was saying, it's generally best to have lower timing values in higher load sites. This makes it so as the boost builds, the timing goes down as the load goes up. Here ya have a little spot where the timing went down then up. Under peak torque, it's usually best to have the most timing at lower rpms and the least at peak torque. Peak torque is usually where full boost hits....... So, ya don't really want the timing to bob up and down as the boost builds. Not that this little blip matters, but having a smoother timing map(by changing the timing value in the 30% column below 3250rpm to 26, or changing the value at 3250 to 25, and making the rest of the map smoother) can help the car run smoother and avoid problems.

As the torque starts falling off(everywhere after the boost first hits), and the rpms go up, the timing should generally be increased accordingly. See how your timing is so flat in the 90% column after ya hot full boost? It should be going up slowly until the torque really starts to fall off(around 5500-6000rpm), then go up quicker after that. You're also running 23 degrees of timing in the 100% load column at an rpm where you'r running 17 in the 90% column. Since the timing should generally be lower in higher load columns, the timing in the 100% column should be 16 or lower, or the timing in the 90% column should be 23 or higher. Here's a little example of what you might wanna put in your 90% column for a test....

4750 -17
5000 -18
5250 - 18
5500 - 19
5750 - 20
6000 - 21
6250 - 22
6500 - 23
23
23
...
Just a little example that would probably be a pretty safe start. Also note that in higher load columns, they usually have higher timing values at higher rpm points(since in general torque falls off as the rpms rise after the boost peaks). Since you can't get to the columns without the boost building to the given amount, the timing will end up being lowest at the lowest rpm that ya hit the highest boost at(if the timing goes down with load and up with rpm). That makes it so at peak torque the timing is always the lowest, and then it rises....

You're also running richer in the 20% column at lower rpms then in the 30% column at higher rpms. Usually it's best to keep the a/f ratio leaner in lower load columns, and make it richer as the rpms and load goes up to combat heat/make everything safe during quick spool areas. There's more to it then that(which I don't really know), but this will keep ya moving quicker/safer then you are now.. At that low of an rpm and load(3000 and 20%) with your turbo, I wouldn't make the a/f ratio any richer then 13.5 to 1. If I made it 13.5 to 1, then I'd make the 30% column at least 13.5 to 1 and same with the 40-100% columns.......... Sorry if I confused ya any, but that's just a little stuff off the top.

peace

^^ that information is great value to me.

I had read about the volumetric efficiency stuff it was saying the same things you have mentioned.

I'll be preparing a new map immediately and try it out.

I'll post the results here.

Thanks so much man you really help a lot !

Some answers to your questions, in no particular order:

MAP is slow to respond for one thing - Load is a better indicator of the actual boost. For another, the turbo can't possibly lower boost substantively between successive log rows. Having said that, you won't get as good boost control with the EBC as you would with an MBC or an external wastegate (which I believe you can still control with the factory EBC). But I don't think that's really a problem in your case. If you want stable boost, you'll just need to keep tweaking.

The fuel correction is different because fuel and timing are interpolated vertically. That is, there are values in the map at 1500 and 1750 RPM. At 1500, you get the 1500 value. At 1650, you get something partway between the 1500 and 1750 value. So your fuel is ramping up as your RPMs rise.

As for the RPM decreasing thing, it's probably because logging is a lower priority on the UTEC, as hippy said.

Now, on to your log...

You're still leaning out in the 10 column from 2000-3000 RPM, and then again around 3250. Not as bad, but it could be smoother.

I can't say too much about timing as I'm not as familiar with the EJ205, but it does look like you're leaving a lot of power on the table. Spooling the turbo by trying to raise EGTs (lower timing) is one approach, but I think you'll get better area under the curve overall by making your timing more aggressive there. Your turbo (similar to mine), with a ball bearing cartridge will spool quickly if the exhaust is there - higher EGTs aren't going to help substantially, but getting more torque out of the engine with higher timing, so that the RPMs can rise, will. I would shoot for good power in those areas, but if you run into knock events, then back it off a couple extra degrees. This will help you make maximum power under the curve, avoid spool knock, and maybe get a slight advantage from higher EGTs than at MBT timing.

:( Sorry to hear that. That's why I haven't gotten as much tuning time as I'd like - not many good empty roads in this part of Maryland anymore...

Hi everyone, here is my last log.
My A/F's seem to be better and I get no knock.
I have some high egt issue tough. My EGT probe is in the 3rd exhaust manifold and my numbers at redline at 4th gear (Going WOT till 4th gear) is 830 C.

BTW, I feel like I can make more power out of this setup. Can you check what I can do about my map values to get more power?

i guess i have that knock because of timing. I'll take care of it.

Unless you're going for fuel economy, there's no reason to shoot for any leaner then 14.7 to 1 anywhere in your hard throttle fuel map(10-100% columns and above 5000rpm in the 0% column). It would probably be safer to run 14 to 1 where you wanna run 14.7 to 1, just so if it changes a little you'll still be on the better side of 14.7 to 1. I would personally run 13.5 to 1 at the leanest(anywhere in the map), and have it get richer from there(as the rpms and load go up). Any leaner then that, and you're losing power(as far as I know). Also, make sure to check(and maybe change) how your a/f ratio goes from 14.7 in the 10 and 20% columns to 13ish in the 20 and 30's, then back the 14.5 in the 40% column. It would probably be good to lean/richen some of that so it isn't all bouncy wouncy. The a/f ratio should just get richer as more boost comes on, not up down up down.

Smooth it out a bit, 23 degrees in the 70% column at that point is obviously a bit too much. Course your ecu didn't seem to mind. Imagine changing the value in the 90% column to 18, having 21 in the 60% column at 4000ish rpm and having 19-20 in the 70% column. That's still a lot of timing at that rpm(at least imo). So it would ramp down from 23 in the 50 to 18 in the 90(making sure all the other ones are smooth too)... Then start rampin it up from there. The other log of knock idoesn't look like knock to me, and if it is, it's probably not cause the timing's to advanced. What kinda fuel are you using?
