I am buying a replacement oem Exedy cluth for my wrx from wilkens subaru. They asked me for the vin and said they needed it to determine the production date/model I have?!! I have never heard of this before. Also, if I give them my vin, is there anyway they can put on file that my clutch was changed?
thx

Never heard of such a thing. 5mt clutch and flywheel fit into a 6mt no problem so I can not imagine a change within 5mt itself makes any difference  .

Actually this does make sense. There were changes made to the clutch components during the production run to deal with the shudder issue. You may very well need to provide the production date of your car to get the correct parts.

Many Vendors need you VIN for clutches, brakes, etc. for many reasons. I personally know Jackie at Wilkins Subaru. She nor any other Subaru parts person would ever use your VIN for anything other than looking up a part.

They wanted the same thing from me when I was looking for a front o2sensor.

My local dealership has the most ignorant person working. I literally asked him for FLOOR MATS and he asked for my VIN!

I looked at him and laughed.

Mulder, nothing to do with which clutch you put in. Guess what, 1 Exedy sport clutch for all 5mt's. 02 fits in 04 and vice-versa. Changes were to clutch cylinder and flywheel as far as I can tell. If I used your 02 vin and put that clutch in my 03 it would work just fine. I swear.

And the change in the flywheel affects the clutch. Try and mix and match, it won't work. Just ask FreeBMW
