View Full Version : Is it normal for a 6 speed to have foamy oil

I decided to check the oil level on my tranny today, and noticed something odd. The dipstick came up with foamy oil, the car had been off for only a few minutes. I had driven it for a little while, not sure if this is normal?? Any input?? This is a JDM 05 tranny by the way.

Thanks,
Alex

Mine has never been foamy. I've checked it numerous times. Is the fluid cloudy or clear?

Mine has never been foamy either.

Depending on the condition of the gear oil it can either be overfilled or contaminated. It just seems kinda odd for a '05 transmission to have any contamination in the oil.

I would just drain the oil and fill up to the correct level just to be safe. It's cheap insurance in the long run.

It's only foamy after it has been driven, I checked it about 10 min after I had driven the car and that's how it looked. If I check it after it has been sitting for a while it looks fine, really clean with no fogginess. I will definately replace it this saturday just to make sure.

The best I could think is that there is some measurable moisture, perhaps water or another substance that would ruin the viscousity of the tranny fluid.

Does it geel or appear that the fluid has lost it's viscousity.

All pure speculation, but just like you said, change the fluif to be on the safe side.

The dipstick comes out with a lot of air bubbles on it, the oil itself seems fine. Not sure what to make of it, I was kind of thinking that it might be the front helical lsd that made it appear that way. That seems unlikely though, I will for sure flush it tmr morning just to get that off my mind.

Thanks everyone,
Alex
