View Full Version : Am I getting Knock??? Utec says no???
jstbstn 12-03-2004, 03:17 PM Hey Guys, I am trying to figure out if I am actually having knock occur and the utec is just not detecting it. My stock ECU timing column has some pretty substantial drops in some spots but then they come right back up... does this mean there is knock happening? Does the knock sensitivity of the utec need to be turned up?? I am using the stock set parameters from turbo XS for knock sensitivity. SO is this actual knock or not, if I need to increase knock sensitivity what levels do you suggest? Tha map that I really started noticing this in the lowerboost logs. I have logs from last week with my high boost, advanced timing that don't show this at all. I have been making a winter map with lower boost and timing and that is when this really started showing up, doesn't make sense to me that lowering boost and timing would cause knock??? Any help would be welcomed!

I am reverting back to the stock turboXS stage 2 timing map for now and boost is coming down, hopefully will be safer.
Why is the UTEC not detecting the knock? what should I move sensitivity levels too?? What should ECU timing levels be at???
We don't have a dyno anywhere near where I am so I have to road tune, so help would be much appreciated.
dosage0 12-03-2004, 04:49 PM have you reset the ecu anytime recently? It could be that you have been knocking in those areas and the stock ECU is keeping your timing low because it has knocked in the past. If you look at your 3k-4k area its just low... its low during every pull. I dont see any dramatic drops... just low timing across the board.

So, if these are knocks what should I do???? From what I can tell this is definately due to timing issues. So far I have reverted back to base stage 2 timing maps and will work on getting my AFR to 11:1 instead of adding so much timing. Do you guys think there is anything else I should do?
hippy 12-04-2004, 12:06 PM I think you should reset your ecu and take another log. It would probably also be good to look into solutions for "shift knock", and check your knock detections settings again.

dosage0 12-05-2004, 03:08 PM why would you lean out your maps to solve a knocking problem? Leave your AFRs at 10.5. You're mostly "knocking" where you are switching from the ECU to the UTEC. If you have the tuna -- tuna pro? -- do you have your knock sensor hooked up? Listen to see if you are really knocking.

As stated above, reset the ECU and log again. This is knock so you are going to end up removing UTEC timing in these areas. Someone said this above and it is 100% correct. The ECU has been seeing knock over and over again so it has kept on removing timing in those areas. Of course it makes no difference as the UTEC is in control.
I would bet your IAM is between 6 and 12, maybe lower to get negative timing values.
PerverT 12-05-2004, 06:43 PM His wideband is reporting 11.37 and 10.17 at 1.9 and 2.9 psi of boost, so part of the problem may be that he's way to rich in certain spots.
He's also hitting the 100% load column at 9 psi on some logs and 12 psi on others. Maybe he just needs to change his parameters so he hits the 100% column at 18 or 20 psi.
hippy 12-05-2004, 06:58 PM I've had no problems with knock when running at 10 to 1. I agree that his fueling could be more consistent, but that doesn't look like the problem. It might have been more of a problem in the past, but just cause the ecu timing is retarded there that doesn't mean he actually knocked in that log. Also, if you want to know why it looks like he's at 9psi in the 100% column, check this out (http://www.wrxhackers.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=62). He's not really running 9psi, it just looks like that. The load sites are a much more accurate representation of the boost in logs because they're what the utec uses to determing fueling and timing adjustments while at a given point. If he's in the 100% load site, that means the utec is using fueling/timing adjustments for everything above the max value for mapping psi. It looks like he set the max value for mapping psi to something like 16, so where ya see 100% load, ya know it's higher then 16psi(even though the number in the log might be lower). As always, this is just my opinion.....

jstbstn 12-06-2004, 02:10 AM Alright, well the reason I said I was going to lean out the fuel mixture to 11:1 was with the timing removed back to base map timing and try running a leaner mixture instead of advancing timing. So in essence I retarded timing up to 3 degrees in some spots as a solution to solve my apparent knock problem.
My mapping psi is set at 16 as is default, what should it be set at?
I upped the sensitivity on the knock detection of the UTEC by 10 to test if knock would show up and still nothing. I am going to try and turn it up all the way and see if it picks anything up. I haven't reset the ECU yet, cause I wanted to test and see if the UTEC would detect the knock. My tuner is the lite version so no mic.
What are IAM values???
I read that document on MLP vs. MAP and that could be very true because my boost gauge seems to peg full boost and hold right away at RPM's that the log show very low boost numbers.
Keep the advice coming guys. It was mentioned that I should smooth my fueling, but isn't the afr change due to the load sites jumping? How would you suggest smoothing this?

hippy 12-06-2004, 02:41 AM You can have your max value for mapping psi at whatever you want. A lot of people use the 100% column as an overboost column. If they wanted to stay under 18psi, then they could put the max value for mapping at 18psi(like default, or whatever they want their normal boost to stay under), and put safe timing/fueling in their 100% load columns for if they overboost. Then if they ever went over 18psi they'd be in the 100% column with safe timing/fueling, and use the 10-90% columns the rest of the time at hard throttle. I don't really have a problem with my boost spiking/rising so much, so I don't keep that safety column and put the max value for mapping psi to basically my target boost instead of a little over....... Let's say the target boost in both situations was 16.5, and in the first the max value for mapping would be 18. Mine would be more like 16.5.
IAM=Ignition advance multiplier. I dunno exactly how it works:), but lets say there's a base timing map in the ecu with static values and what not. The advance multiplier is a value which shows how much the ecu likes what it sees, and adds or removes timing to/from the basemap accordingly. The aim starts out somewhere in the middle(after a reset), and works its way up adding timing to the basemap til it gets to the maximum amount that it adds. If the ecu detects detonation with the knock sensor, it lowers the aim which lowers the amount of timing being added to the basemap. If the ecu continues to see det, it continues to remove timing(cound end up removing more then what it started with after the reset. If the car runs for a while without any detected det, the aim should work itself back up(as far as I know).

jstbstn 12-07-2004, 04:26 PM I very rarely get my CEL flash for knock, I watch for it all the time. I have even upped the sensitivity of the UTEC and still nothing, I'm going to turn it up all the way and see what happens. I'm not sure what the values are set at? they are at the default which I think was 2 degrees pulled per knock up to a max of 16.
I reset the ECU today and filled up with fresh 94. The log before and after showed a definate difference but the problem was still there. It seems that it is definately mash/shift knock and occurs at 16 and 17 degrees of advance for most of the knocks and most around 35-4500 rpm. Here's the log.

The spaces/blank lines in the log are where I took out useless 0TPS column data, I didn't just want to put it all together and have someone think something wierd was happening.
serendipity 12-07-2004, 10:54 PM how are you resetting your ECU? maybe it's not really resetting? Those really look like "legacy" timing pulls, like the ECU saw knock or a lot of knock at some point, and it's just remembering to run retarded (pun intended) timing in them.

Ever notice how sometimes when you're not pulling/adding any maf voltage, the modified maf is still different from the maf reading? I dunno why this would happen or if it has anything to do with what's going on with the timing in your log. I just find it strange how at certain points you're removing maf voltage, but the modified maf voltage is higher then the normal maf voltage, and vise versa sometimes when you add fuel.

here's one example of the maf voltages being way off for the amount of fuel map offset. It also has strange timing, which is a nice little coincidence. eh,

jstbstn 12-07-2004, 11:44 PM I reset the ECU shiv's way only without the timing advance step, just in case. SO warmed up car, disconect negative, pump brake pedal, leave for 15 min, reconnect and drive.
I don't understand what is going on at the points that you just highlighted...still beyond me. As for the shift knock... would it trigger a cel for knock or not? Is the knock happening before the utec is back in control so no light? I know to get rid of shift/mash knock you add fuel in the 0 and 10% columns... the question is how much?
I'd like to get this solved sooner than later so I don't damage anything... thanks for all the help guys keep it coming.

hippy 12-08-2004, 12:17 AM Someone pointed out that the utec can always detect knock, but when it's not in control of timing it doesn't do anything when it sees knock. From what I've seen, locking down the timing at higher rpms in the 0% column is a good place to start when trying to prevent shift knock. The first map in the download section on the old wrxhackers site in the highly tuned section of utec maps is mine. If you check it out, you will see how I adjusted the timing in the 0% column(and the rest of the columns) at higher rpms to try and keep the timing smooth during a shift...... Here's a little snip from one of your logs with a point that could have caused shift knock because of drastic timing changes.

Now if the timing in your 0% column from 5500-7000rpm was 23, the timing wouldn't jump upto 39 then back down like it did.

I've added a bit of fuel in the area of the shift knock like it says to in the ginge's manual. I'll try it out tomorrow and see where I get to.

I also put max map back to 18 and brought down OLF crossover to 23 (that smoothed out crossover alot). Any other problems or anything else that you guys can see?

at +2.9, 1.9, 2.5, you have static value for timing. Is there reason why you would like to tune timing at such a low load zone?
I would only put A VALUE for timing map in 60, 70, 80 ,90, 100 load zone..

More timing equals more power, according to the ginge's manual, and my values are still the same as the base maps, so still conservative. Also it takes time to get boost up to where the higher load columns become active so the lower columns could use the bit more power.

This is correct. Timing in the lower load zones is a good thing and will make the car feel smoother. Watch out, if you add too much timing in the lower load zones, 10, 20 you will end up brining back shift knock which you resolved with the locked down timing in the 0%.
okay so I changed the map to include timing in the 0 column and I think it may have fixed the problem... here is the log, I had one occurence of shift knock at about 3900, should I bring 0 column timing down that low? I also put max map back to 18 and brought down OLF crossover to 23 (that smoothed out crossover alot). Any other problems or anything else that you guys can see?
This is a good example of that. No, do not lock down the timing in the 0% that low. I think I have mine locked down from 5000 rpm and above.
Shift knock at this point means that the lower load zones now have too much timing... It's a fine line.
FYI - You have a wideband make use of it... 10.2:1 is too rich. 10.2:1 AFR is like this... Next time you fill up with gas, cut out the middle man and just pour 2 gallons onto the sreet :)

hippy 12-10-2004, 03:39 PM You can lock down your timing at lower rpm areas in the 0% column if you want. The only prob is that it might end up costing you power and creating high egts if you ever go into that range at part throttle. I lock down my timing from 4250 and up because I don't usually cruise at those rpms. When I do, I watch the egt's. Also, the 0% column could look more like the 10% column having lower timing values at lower rpms.

The ECU in that area seems to be always between 25-40 degrees advanced for a variety of throttle positions in the 0 column, so I figured I should stay close to that range. Except for 0TPS which gives a low timing value of about 11.
So how should I get rid of that shift knock a post up? lower timing in the 10 and 20?
hippy 12-10-2004, 09:01 PM There's no shift knock above, it was just an example of the timing jumping:). Just cause the ecu timing jumps dramatically, that doesn't mean there was any detonation. To tell ya the truth, I'm not so sure why that happens(the ecu timing jump). Imo it most likely isn't a knock though since the load is lo low.

hippy 12-11-2004, 12:20 AM I really don'y know. Could just be the ecu retarding timing because of what it saw in the past. Could be that you're knocking in that log, but I don't think so. There might be some reason unknown to me for that to happen too?

jstbstn 12-14-2004, 07:53 PM okay guys so the tuning battle go's on... got a little slowed down as my utecedit program that I rely on expired (which I still haven't figured out how to fix) so editing is taking a bit longer.....
anyway I am finally getting my AFR's moved to be around 11:1 but during my tuning I have noticed some weird things at WOT. Once boost is full up and I am in a pull, anywhere where it richens up I get a drop in power and a sound like rich afterfire out of the exhaust and then it picks right back up to pulling again once it leans out? I still have knock sensitivities turned up just in case and not knock is being triggered, the stock ECU timing is staying up and not showing it detecting any knock... so I guess the question is is that huge change just from the AFR dropping too rich? I have been tuning in small steps just to be safe and I first noticed this alot on saturday night where all the way from 4-5k rpm it would be on power, off power, on power, off and so on and only in 3rd or higher. So I kept working on my map because I saw a wave in my AFR's that were right at that RPM zone and it is much better than what it was and only have one or two little holes in the map left... which I will work on today. I just want to make sure this is a normal product of a change from a good AFR to one that is too rich? here's a log from today...

so to fix this should I drop timing down to 17 in the 10 in the area of the knock? Or do I need more fuel in that are of the map?

hippy 12-14-2004, 09:21 PM I wouldn't think 18 is too much at that point. I really don't know why your ecu timing looks so retarded........ Other then your 70% column bein richer then the 80 and 90, I din't really see much wrong. Did ya feel that hesitation in the logs above, or did ya not get to log it? Does it happen all the time?
ride5000 12-14-2004, 10:02 PM there's no knock in that log. you are seeing the result of knock which once was.
jstbstn 12-14-2004, 10:48 PM Ya I felt it a little in the longer log up top... I have other logs from today that I felt it more in. But the log looks almost identical to that one with just a wave in AFR and no knock. As far as 70 being too rich, I worked on that this afternoon and will through the map in the car in the next couple days and take some more logs and then I'll see where I am at.
As far as there being no knock, that's what I am trying to determine. I did an ECU reset last week and those spots came right back and the UTEC wasn't detecting any knock there, so that should mean that there was knock at some point right? Could it be that the timing is changing so drastically because of the abrupt AFR shift?
ride5000 12-15-2004, 08:46 AM reset the ecu again. how do you KNOW you reset it before? you shouldn't see any dips in the ecu timing right after resetting. i've "reset" my ecu and managed to clear the odometer AND radio stations, but NOT actually cleared the ecu! ;)
timing is not dependent on AFR directly. if the afr is lean enough to cause knock then it will affect timing, but not before.

jstbstn 12-16-2004, 04:28 PM Well.... the hesitation problem is almost completely gone. It is only minorly noticable now for a fraction of a second. It was definately caused by AFR getting rich in spots. There is also a major difference now in how the car pulls! Spool up is about 800RPM faster and I can hit full boost by about 26-2700RPM and it pulls really hard! One more tuning session and it should be almost perfect! Now I noticed today that my EGT are getting pretty high, I hit 14k by the end of 3rd and am hitting 16k by about 6k in fourth....so now should I add some fuel back in to counter this or start advancing the timing above 5k? I am hitting about 11.2-3:1 by redline.
