View Full Version : injector Duty cycle?
STUDAndring 12-07-2004, 06:11 PM I have a stage 4 Turboxs utec map and when I go passed 4500RPMs with 100% throttle my #1 duty cycle goes to a recording of ---.- Does that mean that I am maxing out my injectors. And if so how is that I know that the injectors should be good up to 300WHP and I know I am not hitting that. Maybe I am running to rich and that is what is maxing it out. If anyone has some input please post. Here is my 3rd gear date log under full throttle to redline.

mbiker97 12-07-2004, 06:18 PM You are running really rich as long as I'm reading that right. Yank some fuel out of there and watch the duty cycles go down.
Russ77 12-07-2004, 06:25 PM yikes, that is very rich. my vf34 setup would peak at around 20psi and taper down to about 18psi toward redline. the highest my IDC's ever got were in the low 80% range, and that was running AFR's in the mid 10's.
RiftsWRX 12-07-2004, 06:43 PM 18 PSI.... 10.5:1.... low 80s?
No harm no foul bud... but that just does NOT add up if you're using pinks on a stock regulator... heh ;)

mick_the_ginge 12-07-2004, 06:46 PM Ditto on you being rich. Your wideband is not telling lies, less than 9:1 in places. Looks like you are rich across the board you may want to scale the injectors a little to bring everything in-line.
What injectors are you running? What UTEC scaling have you used?
As rich as this can cause misfire which in turn can destroy your coil packs watch out.
STUDAndring 12-07-2004, 06:53 PM I am running pinks in my car and I do not believe that I could possibly be maxing them out so I think that I will reduce my voltage to the MAF. SO that it will lean out and reduce injector cycle. DO you guys agree?
P.S. Should I go ahead and advance the timeing after I get the AFR around 10.5 to 11 to 1.
mbiker97 12-07-2004, 07:08 PM Depending on which turbo you are using you very well could be maxing the injectors. Get your boost where you want it, then up your afr to ~11:1, and then add timing.
Also read this: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=673369 It may be over your head, but it should get you thinking.
STUDAndring 12-07-2004, 08:00 PM I am running the VF34 turbo
hippy 12-07-2004, 08:31 PM At least we see someone who's been running richer then 9 to 1 and not misfiring:). Eh, if you're wbo2 reading is correct, it would probably be a good idea to remove fuel(like everyone else said). It would probably also be a good idea to know what you're doing b4 you start doing that though. It's not gonna help ya much if people just tell ya what to do. Here's a little link that might help........ (http://www.wrxhackers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2758)
peace
What UTEC scaling have you used?
You should zero out your fuel map and adjust injector scalling until you are in the mid 10's and fine tune from that point.

You missed the WB AFR in the supplied log file. It's reading 9:1's.... Now that's what I call drinking from the fire hose....
Jon [in CT] 12-07-2004, 10:13 PM As rich as this can cause misfire which in turn can destroy your coil packs watch out.I'd be interested in the hearing theory behind the assertion that too-rich misfires can destroy a coil pack.
serendipity 12-07-2004, 10:34 PM ']I'd be interested in the hearing theory behind the assertion that too-rich misfires can destroy a coil pack.
Apparently the theory goes that if the mix is rich enough that the usual voltage isn't enough to cause a spark, the energy gets dissipated back into the coil pack rather than through a spark.
I dunno. I do know that I lost a coil pack, and I suspect it was caused by high cylinder pressures making it tough for the plug to fire, stressing the pack.

serendipity 12-07-2004, 11:16 PM ']This is nonsense.
I agree. Mixture shouldn't greatly affect voltage needed to spark.
Cylinder pressure will though...
Jon [in CT] 12-07-2004, 11:23 PM I agree. Mixture shouldn't greatly affect voltage needed to spark. The spark always occurs. The only question is whether or not it can ignite the air/fuel mixture.
hippy 12-07-2004, 11:33 PM here's a little shpeal from the ngk website...
A spark plug is said to have misfired when enough voltage has not been delivered to light off all fuel present in the combustion chamber at the proper moment of the power stroke (a few degrees before top dead center). A spark plug can deliver a weak spark (or no spark at all) for a variety of reasons...defective coil, too much compression with incorrect plug gap, dry fouled or wet fouled spark plugs, insufficient ignition timing, etc...........
...Fouling will cause spark to leach to metal shell...no spark across plug gap will cause a misfire.........
Maybe fouling causes the coil pack problem, and the misfire is just a sign of the fouling? Makes me wonder what happens when the spark doesn't jump the gap(other then misfire). eh,

I isntalled my utec last night (left the ABC in the box) and did a couple pulls to try to get my boost somewhere close to 16.1psi. Is it weird that my injectors would go static in the 6000 rpms at only 14.5psi?

mbiker97 12-08-2004, 01:54 PM Aaron: That's normal. The injectors are barely big enough for the stock turbo/displacement.
AaronWRX 12-08-2004, 02:07 PM should i be worried? It looks like im dancing around 99 most of the time. I know I'm boosting a little more then the stage1 maps are supposed to, but I’ll be tossing on a turboxs catless stealthback this weekend if it doesn’t rain.
I also have a walmart fuel pump somewhere in my old stage4 parts bin. Would this give me any headroom?
I'm also sitting on some STI perrin moddified's but didn’t really want to go through the hassle of the installation until I can decide on a turbo. Do people run these injectors on the stock turbo?
mbiker97 12-08-2004, 02:46 PM Back in the day I was running STi pinks on the stock WRX turbo. I just wanted more headroom too.
I wouldn't be worried about it. My only suggestion is get a wideband, and see what your afrs are. I know the base stage maps for the WRX were richer than they should be on most cars. I believe the pump won't change anything, but some STi owners have reported there was increased fuel pressure.
