For some reason my speedometer needle will stick when I am up over 70. It will move to the proper speed if I tap of the plastic shield enough, but if I am up around 75 then get off the gas the needle will stay there and then jump down around 60 or so.

Has the gauge cluster cover been opened before? Has an aftermarket gauge cluster overlay ever been installed?

Those that install aftermarket gauge cluster overlay often experience needle sticking. Afaik, the cause is improper mounting of the needles; it is either too far down or not pushed down enough.

If your car is new and there has never been any work around the gauge cluster area, then the best bet is to go back to your dealer for a warranty fix.

It is possible that the needle has been sitting near the proper position, but have been slowly sliding away.

It wouldn't hurt to gently push & pull the center of the needle a little to see if it "clicks" to any particular position. There are threads in the past talking about the needle sticking. You may want to try to find them, as at least one of them talked about the proper procedure to place the needle in the right position. Afaik, it has to "click" to a particular location.

Note: I've never installed overlays, so my remarks are solely based on my recollection of reading similar posts. Perhaps those with direct experience can chime in. :)

I have reverse indiglos on my '02 WRX gauge cluster. I recently had to fix this problem of the needle sticking on the speedometer (between 65 - 80 MPH). Check to see if the overlay is bubbling up in certains areas. If it is and you still want to keep the overlays on, I would suggest getting 3M double-sided tape (not the thick kind but the one that is like regular Scotch tape but double-sided and clear). Other than that, check the needle also per satrya's post or do away with the gauges ;).

Not having owned one, I wasn't aware of the possibility of bubbling up as Hank3 suggested. In that case, if you are having a hard time finding a thin enough double-sided tape, 3M also sells stick-on spray, usually for art projects. You may want to experiment with which one you want to use, especially if you want to make sure the original panel will not get damaged when you peel the overlay later on.
