View Full Version : floor mounted switches
Rapid_Roo 12-10-2004, 07:50 PM Ok, I've searched and searched. Here and on Google. I can't seem to find a place to get floor mounted, foot operated switches. I know they are out there, but where can I get them?
RR
thanks for any help. :)
Trunk_Monkey 12-10-2004, 07:56 PM Out of curiosity + free bump = why those?
Mulder 12-10-2004, 08:03 PM If you can find a really old GM car in a junkyard, they used to use floor-mounted dimmer switches for the headlights. Not sure what year those were discontinued.
polaris 12-10-2004, 08:15 PM my dads Nova had those. We are talking mid 70's Nova :p

I thought of that. My Dad's 69 Mustang had them.
You would think that with all the restoration going on this would be easier.
RR :)
Rapid_Roo 12-10-2004, 08:23 PM I found it, I have no idea why it took me so long.

This is actually an awesome idea Marvin... I may enlist your help in doing this myself...

I need to do an ABS switch this weekend.
khail19 12-10-2004, 08:56 PM I had my FF1000s hooked up to a dimmer switch mounted in the dead pedal. Worked great, keeps your hands free. Napa part number for the switch is DS114, should be around $8 or so. It's a 3 prong switch, but you only use 2 of them.

NAPA. even better! I just have to go down the street :D:D thanks!
No worries Sergi. I am here for ya my ITN-Brother. :D

My '68 Z/28 has that style dimmer.

No problem! :D
Psydotek 12-11-2004, 09:12 PM Hmmm, more ideas... :) Now here's the problem... Oncoming traffic on a turn where you need to downshift... Now how do you turn off the lights at the last second when your foot is operating the clutch? ;)
Still an excellent idea though. :D

That's the reason I got rid of the floor switch and got a wireless remote switch. It's mounted on the back of my steering wheel where it's easy to click on and off without taking my hands off the wheel. And as an added bonus I regained the use of my dead pedal, which I sorely missed. Similar to this Hella model, but mine only has one button to go on and off.

Trunk_Monkey 12-12-2004, 12:12 AM Imo way cooler than floormounted http://store1.yimg.com/I/fastwrx_1813_15425012 but then again, floor mounted ABS switch could help soothe my ADHD.

I thought of that as well, I found a 10 channel remote relay network. I may yet do it. I posted the original question because I was looking for the foot switch.

10 years ago when I installed those in a previous car, they were cool. They were still military spec at the time. Now they are just too ricey for me

Supposing the switch is indeed near the dead pedal, left foot heel-and-toe, of course. :)
Roo, how about using the available hole on the left hand side of the steering center (opposite of the cruise control) to mount an aux light stalk there?

Well?
Maybe you can scavenge a column-mounted paddle shifter for the switch.

forgot to mention, that my rex is in a garage 30 miles away during the week :( I stopped driving it since I got this 97 Impreza LX to drive to work, and I only got one space here at the apartment :( )
I miss my car now... :(:(
I may take a trip out there tommorow night to work on stuff, I'll get back to you, I promise. :)

I take it you're resisting the urge to add as much lighting to your daily commuter then (iirc, it already has a pair of aux lighting).
Do let us know what you end up with. :)

I tried mounting a switch in my steering wheel, but I couldn't find a way to route the wiring through the steering column. Every way I tried it, the wires would get hung up on something and either come loose or prevent the wheel from turning. If you guys know how to do this please share!

A wireless switch would work, but those kits cost about $100...
khail19 12-14-2004, 02:05 PM That's what I have now, but it was only like $30 for the remote switch kit. I was just wondering if there was a way to run the wiring through the steering column safely, cause I couldn't figure out how. And I hate it when other people do stuff that I tried and failed at!
Psydotek 12-14-2004, 02:10 PM $30?!? Where? :) I had the Hella wirless kit in mind and that costs $100 i think. I suppose i could always just make my own.
khail19 12-14-2004, 02:24 PM Well I got mine at NAPA (I work there), retail price is $40, part number 735-2991. I've seen similar kits at Pep Boys and Autozone for around the same price. I know Pilot makes the one Autozone carries, I'm not sure about the Pep Boys one. Here's one I found at JC Whitney,

Here's a 4 channel one that's only $30 + shipping

Afaik, there is a way to run the wire such that it is the least visible possible, by opening the steering column plastic cover (top & bottom pieces), and running them there. Once you get near the steering part, you'd probably want some highly flexible wire with a lot of slack, or just get a retractable wire like this (from www.mcmaster.com , but many electrical stores should also have them):

It has 2 PIAAs, now. It will have 2 of the Hella 500s, maybe more later. I am not too worried about losing lights. I just hate door dings and my daily driver is a bit of a beater. Lets just say I am one of the most fear ppl in the parking lot now

At one point I thought of multiplexing the cruise control controls. A while back it was popular of IASCA competitors to use these controls as audio controls, now its much easiers to use remotes. I had trouble finding the people that used to make these multiplexer kits. (basically you could hardwire the headunit to the cruise control buttons, and when CC was on it would do CC stuff, when it was off it would do audio controls)

Good Price and good links. I will have to look at that 2-Ch one, it's cheaper than the 4-ch one I was looking at before.

So when do we get to see pictures of it on the aux. lighting thread? :)
Rapid_Roo 12-14-2004, 06:25 PM So when do we get to see pictures of it on the aux. lighting thread? :)
there will be family pictures up when RI finishes my new rack for the WRX and installs the skidguard on mc GC. :) By then I hope to find a place where I can set up some cones and do night time lighting examples...
... as if I am not busy enough, I still need to figure out where to hold the class for the beginners for next ITN Road Rally Season opener in Feb. And go exploering with Joe to decide where to run the rally.
no rest for the wicked I suppose

Ok, I checked this out. It is tempting to mount something there... something on the order of a larger button that is wired to one of the small buttons on a remote transimtter and then using a remote relay kit. BUT, I fear that the bolt that you can spy in the hole is the one that holds the airbag in place. in which case I would be very hessitant to mess with it.
Obviously, this will consider a bit more thought. I keep it on the forward burner a bit longer...

Yes there is a hole on each side with a star head bolt inside. Those hold the airbag module in place. There is no other hole on the left side that I can see. If you remove the airbag there is plenty of room to mount a small switch back there. I drilled a hole towards the top of the wheel, maybe 2 or 3 inches above where that hole is for the airbag bolt. I still have a switch mounted there actually, it's just not hooked to anything due to my previously mentioned wiring problems.
