View Full Version : Hate that STi spoiler/wing
bwagman 12-11-2004, 10:14 PM Hello All enthusiasts,
This is a question about the rear wing on the STi.
I know the spoiler/wing on the new STi is functional and provides downforce. However, I simply just don't like it! Plus my commute requires me to not go over 80 MPH were in other situations above 80 mph the wing may actually become effective. My question is, does Subaru or any aftermarket companies make a less (Fast and the Furious) aggrerssive wing...one that does not look like a giant rectangle? I understand that some people like the wing, and I don't mean to offend, but I'm approaching 30 and don't need the extra attention. Has anyone changed their rear wing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Ben

bwagman 12-11-2004, 11:18 PM I like the WRX wing better than the STi. Can the WRX wing fit in place of the STi Wing?
Thanks,

Trunk_Monkey 12-11-2004, 11:23 PM What people do around here is you find somone around you with a WRX trunk that wants a STi trunk; and you guys get togther and change out trunks - they are fully interchangeable. Its called trunk swapping, usually posted in the classifieds or local forums.

EDIT: i have been thinking about going wingless, it looks hawt
wrxwookiee 07-02-2006, 11:55 AM Wingless FTW! :) The limited has a very subtle trunklid lip spoiler that is very thin and runs across the back ledge of the trunk.

Jag32 07-02-2006, 08:00 PM whats the STI limited wing have?
It's like a wedge.
jay25RS 07-02-2006, 08:23 PM STI limited wing looks reminscent of an Audi S4 lip spoiler.
alpnwhite96 07-02-2006, 09:42 PM from the posts i've read on nasioc, the sti wing is only functional at speeds over 100mph and even still it wouldn't make a significant difference for 90% of street driving.

Good lookin Subie. IMO, wingless looks naked.

It becomes effective at speeds of 70mph or so.

If you don't like it, just get rid of it. Hardly as much attention than before.
Wingless ftw.
platinum05 07-16-2006, 01:54 AM at first i was all about the sti wing and was even going to buy one from ebay but lately its been kinda not been lookin so appealing...but i think wingless is kinda wimpy :) lookin, maybe it will grow on me but i doubt it. I am thinkin more about the evo 9 wing. The carbon fiber inlay is sexay. If it mounts up ok on the wrx trunk i will probably be trying to get one of those onto my rex once i go stage 5ish. Wings i think should only be for cars that can put down some power.
impreza06Subaru 07-16-2006, 04:21 AM i like the STI spoiler alot.....an STI without the STI spoiler doesnt look as appealing to me.
bani111 07-18-2006, 12:07 AM sti wing attracts too much attention from wannabe-racers, criminals, and police.
stealth sti ftw
IntegraR0064 07-20-2006, 05:31 PM Yeah I would just pull it off, personally.
It also blocks your rear view quite a bit, all riciness aside.
swiftone 07-22-2006, 07:27 PM sti wing attracts too much attention from wannabe-racers, criminals, and police.

i had the basic wrx wing and i got tired of it quick, pulled it off and now i'm a happier man. my buddy has an sti and he get's pulled over all the time in our neiborhood, i have never gotten pulled over once.it all depends on how much you go to the track, if you go all the time then deal with it, and if you don't go swap for a wrx wing. to be honest with you, you won't have a hard time finding somebody to swap with there a dime a dozen on the subie forums.
stealth is the best!!!
bani111 07-23-2006, 12:58 AM Yeah I would just pull it off, personally.
It also blocks your rear view quite a bit, all riciness aside.
Well the other thing is it feels like driving a cartoon, I always feel like an ass when I look in the rear view mirror.
Begone, giant wing!

trunk swap? or did you fill in the mounting holes?
stealth is the best!!!
now just need to do something about the hood scoop... dont want FMIC though.
jmolaver 07-23-2006, 02:50 AM I also didn't want the attention on the street, here are some pics of my old '05 CGM after my wingless swap..

great pic.. but yea, i love the wing
swiftone 07-23-2006, 08:42 PM trunk swap? or did you fill in the mounting holes?
i bought some clips, from pep boys and they work fine. i only did that so whenever i want to put the wing back on i can.
now just need to do something about the hood scoop... dont want FMIC though.
okay now the hood scoop is a different story. i love the hood scoop it gives it an aggressive look but not ricey it's more unique. fmic and a 2.5 rs hood is the only way to do it.
Innocent World 07-24-2006, 12:00 AM I like the WRX wing better than the STi. Can the WRX wing fit in place of the STi Wing?
Thanks,
Ben
Of course.
Black-Falcon 07-24-2006, 01:01 AM Actually, you would have to trade the entire trunk, because the holes don't line up between the two wings. (STI has way more holes than the WRX wing)
C_Wood 07-27-2006, 12:25 PM I took my STi wing off to go wingless and I love it. I have been thinking about putting on the trunk lip though.
bani111 08-06-2006, 06:56 AM i bought some clips, from pep boys and they work fine. i only did that so whenever i want to put the wing back on i can.
can you be more specific about what exact part you bought?
okay now the hood scoop is a different story. i love the hood scoop it gives it an aggressive look but not ricey it's more unique. fmic and a 2.5 rs hood is the only way to do it.
well since subaru fits the new STIs with the wrx scoop, they obviously felt the giant scoop wasnt required.
i like the stealth scoop of the forester.......
understated ftw.

riSTI 08-15-2006, 04:38 PM I did a trunk swap with a guy in CT a couple months ago and love my STI wingless. Like some have said, the car does look and feel naked for a bit, but grows on me every passing day. It is funny how I get less attention now too. A guy in an Eclipse the other day thought for sure he could take me on the highway...guess what? lol
I don't know about you (OP), but we have an "official trunk trade" thread for the NE regional thread. I met the dude in a parking lot and was out of there within 30 mins. We swapped the torsion bars also. Don't forget about the bars! If you don't your heavy duty STI bars will throw the trunk right off of the car..lol! Oh yeah...the guy gave me $150 while he was at it. I got a little loot and he made out like a bandit!
blueandgold 08-20-2006, 10:04 PM i dont like the big spoilers either, the wrx stock ones are nice
Stoupazz 08-26-2006, 09:19 PM mine is wingless and i like the look, but i do think the wing gives it a nice little sporty look (wrx wing not sti wing).. i actually was interested in finding an s204 wing to put on my wrx, but i dont know where/how to find one since i think its the japanese model.. lol any suggestions?
whateverwrx 09-04-2006, 01:03 AM the STi wing is functional? lol i seen that thing flapping in the wind at 60
ndylam 10-02-2006, 02:44 AM If you don't like the STI WING on your WRX and have unlimited budget.

ndylam 10-02-2006, 02:49 AM Looking for a trunk swap anyone?
I want to trade my wrx wing for a STI wing.
I live in NY, Chestnut Ridge 10977.
Let me know if anyone want to do a swap.
Thanks
Msquared 10-08-2006, 05:55 PM i dont think the sti wing looks bad, but if you want to change it than that is your choice. i do also think that wrx wings look really good on sti's. As far as wingless goes, that only looks good on wrx's IMHO. you could also take a look at the s204 wings.
chaddeus 10-08-2006, 06:16 PM IMO, a wingless Impreza just looks... wierd and ugly.

305wrxPIMP 10-08-2006, 06:41 PM not offense but c'mon guys that's the difference between 2.5Rs(wingless), WRX(little spoiler don't like it but that's just my opinion and STi's (Big spoiler) the STi is a rally car with a rally look and with this wing is a complet package but i think installing a STi wing on WRX's doesn't look good or viceversa just leave Ur STi and WRX alone please

Boilermaker01 10-10-2006, 05:39 PM i didn't mind the spoiler but the wife hated it and it was an idiot magnet
so i decided to get rid of 1/2 my spoilers!

DCSmith9085 07-21-2007, 06:29 PM if anyone is looking to swap trunks Im looking for an STI wing and I have an
o6 aspen white with wrx spoiler.
WEEEEEEE 07-25-2007, 06:51 PM Wingless looks nice in my opinion but this is just me.
GeoffM 07-28-2007, 07:24 PM there are days i love mine and days i hate it.....i would like to go wingless but can't find anyone as of now that'll swap and is reasonable distance wise..
Spooled 08-02-2007, 03:20 PM wingless or the sti limited lip are the only way to go imo. there are lots of subies that can pull off the wrx wing though. anything else is utterly disgusting. just my opinion that's all. don't hate :D

Highway Drifter 08-02-2007, 11:29 PM I personally like the look of the STi wing, but understand the unwanted attraction it brings so I never swapped one out...s202 wing now...ooooh boy
Kilya 08-10-2007, 02:17 PM Just picked up my 07 last night, I love the wing. But if it gets me into too much trouble, I may go wingless.
phait 08-10-2007, 03:35 PM I think wingless makes the Impreza look like any other family sedan.
MERT K 08-13-2007, 07:56 AM i have an 07 sti with no wing... so sexy i love no wing... all i have is the roof vane
yoonjaechung 03-12-2008, 01:33 AM swap?
Foreinvizon 03-30-2008, 11:52 PM wingless or the sti limited lip are the only way to go imo. there are lots of subies that can pull off the wrx wing though. anything else is utterly disgusting. just my opinion that's all. don't hate :D

100% agreed. :disco:
Subie Blue GD 04-01-2008, 05:17 AM hmm...I'm considering taking the wing off my new subie too...
Bimmer Man 04-02-2008, 06:41 PM I use to hate the rear STI wing but but after about 3-4 years it rally grew on me and I am now looking to buy either an sti or evo.
So my vote would be awesome :D

Very under the radar and looks so *(Y%$#*(&(@&ing clean!
trade trunks with someone
Merkwurdigliebe 04-12-2008, 02:24 AM I'd love to get rid of the wing as well. As noted elsewhere, it is an idiot and cop magnet, and its performance in crosswinds makes the car hard to handle. Has anyone found a bolt-on replacement yet? (not a trunk swap)
I have trouble when I hit strong quartering winds or the turbulence that some large trucks trail behind them. It's not the side area that does it, it's the fact that the risers are themselves airfoils. They generate lift that exerts a force towards the center of the trunk. When the airflow is even the forces from the left and right risers balance and cancel out. When working properly the area inside the wing is a box venturi that forms a low pressure region that "pulls" the air stream through. It probably helps keep the air stream attached to the car and delays the onset of turbulence.
In quartering winds, however, it appears that the riser on the downwind side is stalling. When that happens, there is no lift generated to balance the opposite riser and you get a push. The location of the riser makes that push more disruptive than a simple side wind. Try shaking the car at the B-pillar and then at the riser and the difference is easy to see.
Behind some trucks it feels like I've got a couple of gorillas jerking randomly on the risers.
Anyone out there know how to design a proper spoiler?
thefattestnun 10-19-2008, 11:57 PM ya thats kinda the point low profile keeps the cops from pulling you over for dumb sheet
I think wingless makes the Impreza look like any other family sedan.
WRBSTiBrett 10-26-2008, 07:40 PM I currently have the Wrx wing on my 07 STi with the rear window spoiler still on, it looks alot better than the Sti wing to me however I feel I will go to the limited wing in the future as I think it looks best =)
