View Full Version : PDX tuned STi - dyno results
glilly 12-16-2004, 08:41 PM So, I finally got to where I wanted to be, ...for now, ..until I get a big fat turbo, etc... Anyway, PDX Tuning was in Houston for a couple weeks. Jarrad explained to me the benifits of thier tuning, in my case a custom tuned ECUtek flash. Below is a pic of my dyno chart. I can tell you this, ...the car feels crazy fast now, ...much faster than my previous stage 4+ WRX. The dotted lines were my previous best numbers of 262 whp / 260 torque. The new lines represent 296 whp / 318 torque. The only change was the flash and tune. Existing power mods included:
K&N STi Typhoon intake
Perrin pulley
Injen DP (catless)
HKS carbon/ti cat-back

other notes:
Weather was 62 degrees in the shop, which i'm sure helped.
We did about 10-12 runs (2-3 warm ups and about 8 tune runs)
Every run was better then the last
Needless to say, I have reached my 1st goal of 300 whp (well, close enough), and have plenty of torque. ...Should keep me satisfied for a while.
Greg ;)
..oh, here's a couple pics:

Thanks again, for the tune.
Phatron 12-16-2004, 08:57 PM Whats up with the crazy torque drop?
300 down to 210 at 6500 thats a 30% drop.
We have been talking about this in another thread too.
Mine only drops 13% and another two guys drop 26-27% just like yours.
my sheet is in here about halfway down

the others guys sheet is here

Anyone know why this is?
That's the tiny stock turbo and no mo' fuel. It's got to be fun to drive though.
chucktoo 12-16-2004, 09:16 PM If you had a boost curve I think you would see it falling off becasue the turbo ran out of steam.
A boost curve with torque and hp explains many things and not others,
Still great numbers on a stock turbo.
pegdrgr 12-16-2004, 11:34 PM FUNNY LOOKING GUY! Just becuase I am follicley challenged does not make me funny looking! :)
The VF39 on a STi is just not able to hold boost up to redline. We could have probably held the power a little more up top, but it really is not worth it. This car is going to be fastest running between 3K and 5K RPM, making a little more power at 6500 is not ever going to be used. Also this setup does not have enough injector to run any more power than this up top.

Phatron 12-17-2004, 01:26 AM Thanks for the explanation.
Hey glilly,
Where'd u get that black thing shielding your intake from the engine?
custom made? what material is it?
Thanks
Ron
V REX 12-17-2004, 02:34 AM I think that black shielding came w/ the K&N.
Hey Jarrad, how does the dynapack at SGP compare to the dynojet at tb.com?
Greg- your engine bay looks so pimp...all that CF goodness. :disco:
happasaiyan 12-17-2004, 08:23 AM pegdrgr- we now know what you look like! when did you start with pdx? knew you had close ties, but didnt know you were part of the team. if it was recently, then congrats!
ps- good #'s. yeah, i was running out of injectors at 12psi at redline. stock injectors suck the big one. how do you like the k&n?
wrrrx 12-17-2004, 10:58 AM Glilly- I second the question above; how do you like your K&N??
I like the setup w/ the shielding, not that I'm completely convinced that it does much... ;)
Hey Jarrad, nice work! I didn't know you were "pegdrgr". (I met you the other day at Jeff's- when he and Tim were prepping for the GP Moto track day)
See ya Saturday?

glilly 12-17-2004, 12:28 PM The K&N STi kit does come with the heat shield. I've had the kit for quite some time now and it works fine. I wasn't keen on the idea of a short ram, much less a cold air, but they convinced me that thier kit was as close to stock AF ratios as possible and wouldn't affect anything. ...they were right.
They also showed me a new MAF deflector shield at SEMA that will be intrioduced with the new kits.
Greg ;)
WolfPlayer 12-17-2004, 12:56 PM Regarding the K&N, 'Toophless' on wrxforum.com did some air temp testing using the K&N Typhoon. It gets hot where the air filter is really quickly if you are at a stop. The shielding doesn't appear to do much. It also takes awhile for the temps to come down once the car starts moving. However, once he added some ducting in the fender to get air over to the filter then the air temps dropped quicker when the car was moving.
... not that ANY of this matters to those who are advocates of 'it doesn't matter what the incoming air temp is since it's going through a hot turbo'. Just wanted to point out that the K&N setup still pulls in hot air unlike something like the APS CAI where the temp of the incoming air is more consistent.

To combat this I tried out an old trick of mine. We strapped the wastegate arm with a 19lb spring from home depot. Gate boost when up to 14. We then adjusted the boost controler to the desired boost. Walla... big improvement. Check out the results last week on an STI I tuned using this trick.

Jarrad.. Good job man! Tune looks great!

you can do that on race gas, since you can lean it out and have sufficient injector flow...
as you know, on pump gas, youll max out the injectors well before that.
fogdor 12-17-2004, 07:37 PM Hey, that doesn't look like Matrix! Was your car tuned closer to the St. John's area perchance?

My guess is they read within 10 HP of eachother, but I can't say for sure since Greg's car was the first one I tuned there. Maybe next trip we can do a comparison test.

Thanks, it has only been a couple months that I have officially been working as part of PDXTuning, but it has been a real good combination so far.
As Greg mentions above, I was very impressed with how close the K&N matched the flow characteristics of the stock unit. I was able to just use the stock MAF profile from our base map. This was something that we were specifically checking on this tune.
Hey Jarrad, nice work! I didn't know you were "pegdrgr". (I met you the other day at Jeff's- when he and Tim were prepping for the GP Moto track day)

Yup, that was me. Nice to have met you. I always forget to tell people in person that I am pegdrgr on NASIOC. Unfortunately I will not be there today, as I am DRIVING back to Portland from Houston! See you next time though.
Jarrad.. Good job man! Tune looks great!
Thanks Clark! If he had injectors or C16 I would have been willing to try for more boost up top, but he was just plain out of injector for anything more.
Hey, that doesn't look like Matrix! Was your car tuned closer to the St. John's area perchance?
This tuning was done in Houston, Tx. I was down in Houston on a business trip and offered our services to locals.
PHATsuby 12-18-2004, 12:06 PM That is one of the best torque curves i have seen, probably a lot of fun to drive. Nice job pegdrgr! PDXTuning is doing some great things, keep it up.
