Has anyone found a good & inexpensive source for the T70 Torx bit needed for the transmission drain plug? Otherwise, it looks like I will be ordering the one from toolsource.com for $30 plus shipping (ouch!).

Also, can anyone confirm that the 2005 MT drain plug is the same T70 as the 2004 plugs? I just want to be sure before ordering the T70 bit.

Can't you just put a socket on it? My 04 WRX tranny bolt takes a 22 or 23 mm socket. I've heard rumors here about the T70 thing, but I thought it was an either/or thing with 04/05 and it would be easier to wrench it off than to take it off with a T70. My tranny plug was originally installed with the strength of five gorillas, so I feel sorry for your mother if you have to spin yours off with a T70. :(

No, it is a flat plug with a recess for a Torx bit. My 2004 had the 22mm hex socket type, but the new 2005 has the new type of plug.

I would watch eBay for a torx t-70 bit - a year or two ago I picked up a set which contains T10 or 15 (I forget) through T70, as well as an assortment of the sockets for $25 (got it to work on my wife's car which has a lot of torx bolts on it) - had no idea how rare the T70 was until recently! I would have bought another set!

I bet you could find one at Sears or if not then stop when you see a Mac or Snapon truck parked. Although it's a pain to have to use a T70 on the tranny drain I understand why they did it. Too many Iffy lube places draining the tranny by mistake. :huh:

I checked Sears, Snap-On, and Mac with no luck.

Try Grainger, McMaster-Carr, or MCS.

Toolsource.com has a T70 for $30 for the 1/2 drive version. Astro-Pneumatic sells an impact set for about $60 that includes a T70.

Toolsource is THE source. And yes its on tight. I reckon ~125ft/lbs. SOA does not want us in there, thats for sure.

I would just go with Toolsource. IMHO, it's not worth the time and headache to try and save $5.00. :D No idea if the '05 is a T70 like some '04's.

Cooper tools also makes one (it's in their Apex line - part no. SZ-TX-70-A) - I have requested info on availability but haven't heard back yet. I wonder if Subaru sells them as one of their special tools, too...

I asked the local Subaru parts guy a couple of times about getting one, last year. He promised he'd check into it, but never responded. I presume it would mean a loss of income to dealership, and that was that...ended up getting a set out of England, wish I'd heard of the Toolsource.com sooner! :lol:

Yah, it's been brought up elsewhere...apparently sometime in MY04 production year, it was changed to a torx. Be happy, but stay outta dem quikie lubes!

I had the hardest time finding the T70. Checked all stores and such like most of you guys mentioned. Found it at Baum Tools on line out of Sarasota, FL. Not cheap. Around $32 shipped. It is made in Germany by Stahlwille. Subaru dealers do not sell this as a special tool either.

My 04 WRX is a T70 torx, and it was on there insanely tight. I had to get the socket from England, it was like $50 total :( . I asked at the dealer (Roto in Arlington Heights, IL) and they said they don't really sell them so they can keep people out of there, presumably Jiffy Lube type places as well as all the owners who want to put a weird conncontion of gear lubes in there. Now that I think about it, the first time I changed my own oil on the WRX, that bolt was on there so tight I thought I was gonna pull the car off the jack stands. Is this a Subaru norm thing? I sure as hell didn't tighten it back up that much.

Yup, welcome to the club. Why you may ask? Spend a few hours/days reading & searching the threads on tranny fluid and it will be clear. SOA is not kind to you going in there.

I changed the oil in my friend's '05 Legacy GT and thought I was going distort the oil pan mating surface. When she let loose I managed to keep one out of my four knuckles from bleeding.
