View Full Version : Can I use lock de-icer on windshield washer nozzles?

My driver side windshield washer spray nozzle keeps freezing up even when it is clear of snow and ice. The passenger side spray nozzle starts working after the engine has been running for awhile and it thaws out- but the driver's side still doesn't work. On warm days they both work fine.

I'm wondering if anyone has used door lock de-icer on the outside of the windshield washer nozzle opening to try to free it up......Will it work? Will it damage the finish?

That would probably damage the nozzle...its made to be used on metal surfaces (like the inside of your door locks etc.) Have you tried to just switch over to the winter winshield wiper solution? its usually red/pink instead of the normal blue/clear this way it wont freeze in your lines......and then if you do get enough ice on top of the nozzle you can always just throw a mug with water in your microwave then pour it over the nozzle to melt it. but you really shouldnt need to with the winter washer fluid and letting your car warm for even just a little.

Vodka seems to do the trick. The cheaper the better.

I always add Prestone Windshield Melt additive (http://www.prestone.com/products/29.htm) to whatever is in the reservoir. It's so strong and smelly that I only use half a bottle and it calls for a full bottle per gallon.
edit: Linky no worky. Go to www.prestone.com, click products/ice fighters/windshield melt.

I actually have Prestone Bug Wash in there now with no antifreeze agent, and the added Windsheild Melt has been fine with our temps in the teens.

Just to add, any problemwith wipers is always on my driverside. The passenger side is clear as day... :furious:

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try them all.
