View Full Version : Dirty New Oil Filters
TJRCS 12-28-2004, 03:11 PM I bought 3 Pulorator Microsopic PureOne filters at Pepboys. They were out of stock, so they had to order from the warehouse. oh well, after almost of a week of waiting, i finally picked up the filters. but to my surprise, the oil filters's holes and top surfaces were COVERED with DUSTS!!!! :furious: http://forums.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif :furious: http://forums.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif http://forums.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif
Should I return them and get OEM filters ??? (i remember that they have plastic seal on the opening.) I cleaned most of dusts with Q-tips, but what if there are dusts inside of the cans??? that's what i worry the most...
Davenow 12-28-2004, 03:14 PM its just dust dude. Blow it off and install.
wrxpeed 12-28-2004, 03:25 PM Yeah, pep boys never carries the Pure One filter that the book says goes to the WRX, so i took home the next number up and measured it and compared it to a Amsoil i had, it's a direct fit and bigger than the PureOne that is listed.
I can't remember the exact number, but i believe the one listed in the book is a PL14459, and i used PL14460.

TJRCS 12-28-2004, 06:21 PM 14460 is the correct one. I guess i have to rephrase my word "dust". They are more like gunks. They are black like oily dusts. i don't know... maybe i'm too paranoid.... but i want cleanest possible oils for my car. thanx
WRXcer 12-28-2004, 06:37 PM Aren't the new filters 14612?

Dm0n3y002 12-28-2004, 09:17 PM I wouldnt use em. Whole point of them is to filter **** out, not add it and then pump dirty oil throughout the engine and filter it back out.
Can you say "paranoid"?
Goosh, it's just dust.
Unabomber 12-29-2004, 12:04 AM but i want cleanest possible oils for my car.
Let us know how the $200 bypass oil filter you will be installing works out for you.

Goosh, it's just dust.
Collect a bunch of dust, throw it down your oil fill tube, and let us know how things work out, tia.
elsanto 12-29-2004, 04:28 PM take them back, Whether or not it will cause a problem is irrelevant. you paid for a new filter, and it should be new, not dusty.

Blow it off before you install it.
Where is common sense?
And your car doesn't live in a clean room.

Yes, for 2004 & 2005 WRX and STi the correct Purolator filter is the PL14612.
TJRCS 12-30-2004, 09:24 AM conditions that i desribed is way more serious than normal dusty filters that pep boys sell on their shelves. I ended up returning them and bought 12 packs of OEM filters at my local dealer for only $60. oh well, it was good deal. no complain here.
subieworx 12-30-2004, 04:38 PM I use the OEM filters. At least that way I can almost keep up with the part number switching.
