View Full Version : how long have your stock clutches lasted?

I bought my car used.It had 60,000 miles. It has minor performance upgrades(Cobb AP at stage1 and silicone hoses) that i added. The car was totally stock when bought.Lately i been noticing when i've been in 4th or 5th and punch it the revs go up and then settle back down. The car doesn't go any faster untill the revs drop and then it goes.I've driven tons of manual trannies and have never experienced this.I'm assuming this is the clutch starting to slip?I've owned 5 cars with manual trannies and have never had clutch problems or have had to change a clutch.I thought maybe i was geting boost spikes but i would imagine the car would be trying to take of like a bat out of hell.It is the original clutch and i wasn't sure how long they usually last.It doesn't happen in the lower gears.

Yes it's slipping and you'll have to replace it. The life expectancy of the clutch depends on how the car was driven and you unfortunately had no control over that for the first 60K.

my car has 27k on it and the clutch is aldready starting to slip. this is kinda weird cuz i dont really rag on it all that much. i've been having an alignment problem, and all my tires are worn unevenly. Could that be a cause?

Alignment has nothing to do with how long the clutch lasts. Wear on the clutch only occurs when it is being slipped, during takeoff and shifting. When you are just driving along in gear there is no wear taking place, unless you rest your foot on the pedal.

26k on my stock clutch and tranny. Had a vf30 w/ supporting mods up until 2k miles ago and my clutch is still great. Getting the kingpin gt kit soon and that will be interesting to see on the stock clutch :) hopefully everything will hold fine till summer when i can afford a 6 speed.

96K of sorta hard use. I had to replace due to a rear crank seal leaking.

I had a stock settup with a Spec-C and JDM 6 speed and it was fine up to 28k when the VF30 compressor seal started to leak oil into the intake air.

Swapped to a Green and the clutch just slipped. Went aftermarket and that one slipped too  So I just had a new stocker I had here with 1k miles on it put in and that one slips!

i have a really bad habit of resting my foot on the pedal, I never realize that i'm doing it. i need to watch out...

I have this same problem...and some here told me it could be the speed sensor crappin out. Now I have no idea.

36,001k on mine. Actually, it was broken from the getgo, but I didn't realize it since I didn't drive any other WRXs. VERY stiff from mile 0, but I didn't realize that was not normal... Took it in to be looked at, and ended up buying a new one - wasn't slipping yet, though.

7,000 miles ...I bought my car with 150 miles on it. It was driven to my dealership from another one. I think the lot boy beat the hell outta my clutch on the transport up because my clutch smelled like it was burning from day one even on easy driving. After a battle with Subie dealer (and a $50 bill in the service writer and mechanics's pocket) I got my new clutch. I've driven it 1200 miles since then and even on 4,500 clutch dumps I've never smelled clutch burn. HHHMMMMM.....

51k miles on my car. Clutch is fine so far. I had another thread about this topic somewhere... :) But my miles are mostly freeway driving. But i'm ready with the $$$ when the time for a new clutch comes around...

I believe they now have a redesigned clutch out for the WRX. Will someone go through the trouble of listing what all was wrong with the original clutch?

There was an update to address the shudder problem in the earlier WRX's. I'm not sure what the particular changes were to the disc and plate, but the flywheel is heavier. This wouldn't have any significant effect on longevity or wear though, that's still mainly determined by how the car is driven.
There is also a damper in the clutch hydraulic system that was added in 03, its purpose is to prevent transmission damage from high-RPM clutch dumps by not allowing it to be released all at once.

I have an early 02 WRX Picked up from dealer in April 2001. Got 65k on stock clutch. Replaced in October with Centerforce Dual Friction. I heard some complaints about the Centerforce, but I took Dan's advice at Harman Motive and the thing has been flawless :D

did anyone in here who got their clutches replaced get them replaced under warranty?

I had my clutch replaced under warranty at 15k for clutch shudder on my '02. I put another 35K on it before I sold the car (no problems with the clutch at all).

Was your car modified at all?

And also, has anyone who had a slipping clutch get it replaced under warranty?

28K on my Stage 1+ SM WRX ... four drag racing events, 100's of AX runs, 160 in Sept/Oct. alone, and no problems. But I've just ordered an Exedy Sport clutch and lightened flywheel to replace the oem ones. I don't want the clutch to start slipping at an important event.

had nearly 40,000miles on my clutch in my old WRX before trade in. i've been to the drag strip quite a bit with moderate 3500-4500 slips, i've autocrossed, and i've rallied it like crazy in the winters that i've had it, and it was still strong when i traded it in, no slipping at all:cool:

I just had mine replaced at 50,050 miles. Started noticing clutch going slowly, then all of a sudden, GONE, it just totally quit holding 4th/5th gear. Surprised me it would quit do fast!

I replaced with exedy stage1

now that i have some mileage on the new clutch, I love it!

Launching is different, tho, more jerky but i am getting better at getting it smooth.

STi organic+JUN flywheel - 25k miles and the clutch & flywheel were both done
Exedy Organic Sport w/stock flywheel - still going with about 15k+ miles on it

Transmission - 70k miles on it

I was a txs stg4 at about 19k miles, more upgrades at 30k and dynoed 308whp.

50k miles now on the Stock clutch, with more than a few launches(always slipping) and no problems. Never got the shudder problem fixed when the car is cold, because it was never a bad enough problem for me. I consider myself lucky.

35,000 27,000 with 290whp, no problems at all. although i do get this wierd synchro whining noise coming out of 1st gear but thats been happening sense like 10,000 miles, i guess i just have louder synchro noise due to the tranny fluid i use.
