View Full Version : DEI 530T Window Module Problems

I tried installing a DEI 530T window module today in my 02 WRX and it didn't go so well. I was able to get the drivers door to work fine, but the passenger window will not move now. I have a Clifford RSX 3.5 which I used to tap into the power, ground when armed output and auxillary. I ran 4 wires into the drivers door and cut the blue/red and blue wires at the switch. For the passenger window I used the black/blue and blue/red wires in the drivers kick panel. I tested all the wires and was sure I had everything set fine and when I tested the windows with the switch and remote nothing worked, the fuse in the power wire blew and the drivers window switches smelled like burning. So I changed the last dipswitch to the down position, which I'm not sure is the on position or not, in the manual it says on is the up position but on the module the down position is labeled on. I changed the fuse and the drivers door works, but the passenger doesn't move. So I've tried everything including hotwiring the motor wires directly on the passenger door to try and get my window up to drive home. I eventually just got frustrated and gave up and removed the whole unit and put wiring back to stock. Unfortunately nothing worked and the window is stuck down. I'm wondering if somehow I burnt out the motor or if the switch is broken. All other windows are fine. Could sending the wrong polarity by not having the dipswitch in the right position somehow burn out the motor? WRX's do indeed use the type C system according the the DEI Manual (http://www.directechs.com/guides/manuals/ig/accessories/N530T_1-00.pdf) right? Any help or suggestions would be great, I can't drive around with the window down like this for long in this weather.

Sorry to hear that. I know doing that much work and having something go wrong is very disappointing to say the least.
First. Did you remove the passenger side switch at all? Maybe while testing and forgot to plug it back in? Maybe check all other fuses also.
I have found a couple of instances where the car wiring does not match the
wiring diagram (in regard to what wire is the up wire and which is the down) which is why I always suggest testing which you apparently did.
I do not have an 02 diagram available to me but you listed these passenger side wires as being black/blue and blue/red wires whereas I saw them as Black/Blue and Red/Blue . (could be my notes are incorrect also)
Without the diagram I do not know if this discrepancy means anything.
If everything is hooked back up correctly and since a fuse was blown it does sound like the motor may have a problem. I do not think the dip switches would have caused that.

Well, I found out what the problem is. My passenger side window motor and switch need to be replaced. I don't understand how this happened. The dealer wants $550 to replace the switch and motor. Does anyone know where I can find these parts cheaper. This really sucks.

You can likely get the parts more cheaply at online discount dealers like www.allsubaru.com or even more cheaply at an "auto recycler". However, you'll still have to pay for the install labor (at least for the motor, as you can definitely handle the switch yourself). I'd try to find a non-dealer Subaru specialist mechanic (or worst case, a Japanese car specialist), as they'll have knowledge about the Subaru power window system.

Hm, how hard is it to install the window motor? I wonder if it's something I could tackle or if I should just leave it to the dealer at this point.

Based only on your "smoky" experience above, I'd suggest having someone with more experience install the window motor. :) However, the dealer would be the most expensive choice. As I mentioned above, a "happy middle" would be to get an independent Subaru or Japanese car specialist to install it. You could probably save 20-25% of the install cost in that fashion. If you buy the replacement parts from someplace like www.allsubaru.com (way out West here), www.subaruwrxparts.com (up in NH) etc, you will also save substantially on the parts cost. Just tell the mechanic up front that you will be supplying the new OEM parts when asking for an estimate.
If money is not an issue, then go with the dealership for parts & labor.
