View Full Version : Should I wait or chip the car and void the warranty?

My local dealership says exhaust mods, etc. will void the factory 36,000 mile warranty. That be said, I've got turboback, uppipe. Typical stage 1, 200whp mods. Well, I got the money... and now I want a UTEC. But, ECU modification clearly violates the warranty. There are 32,000 miles on the car, and it's only about 4 months before it's up. Should I wait or just chip it? Do you think any catastrophic problems will occur with the car in 4,000 miles?

Subaru of Jacksonville?

anything can happen in 4k.

actually you asked in the wrong
forum, but what the hey.

stage 2 typical 200whp not stage 1.

if you want to install the utec go ahead,
but if something should happen you could
always un-install it.

In most states the dealer would have to prove that a specific modification was responsible for a specific part failure, they can not by law tell you that an exhaust or BOV will void your entire warranty. For example if you put a BOV on and all of a sudden a wheel bearing goes out, they must replace that wheel bearing unless they can prove that the BOV caused the wheel bearing to fail (not likely).
Check your state laws and do what you are comfortable with, if you're worried just wait the 4 months.
I sold the entire warranty back to the dealer when I purchased my WRX in 03, because I knew I was going to take the car way beyond what it was intended for.

You're already not going to get powertrain warranty coverage even without the UTEC.
I can't see how any of your mods (or the UTEC) would affect coverage of stuff like the headlights, windshield wipers, seats, or other non-powertrain stuff that the 36/36 warranty covers, so I'd go ahead and do what you want.
