Anyone ever done this..put some loud ass truck horns under the hood. What kinda compressor you use? Anyone's thoughts?

I have one on my 88 truck. The horn was in a kit, compressor and all. I would think that you would need a some upgraded electrical stuff,to keep up with the load. My truck didn't really need the upgrade but when you use it the gauage lights dim very slightly. I'm not sure how it would be on a car.
I don't know if this info applies to you since I think mine is classified as a train horn, and I'm not sure if there is a difference. To be honest, that is one of the only "extra" things I put in my truck which I actaully still find fun even after 8 years since it was installed (the look on people's faces if they cut you off or whatever the case may be.) I rememer I got in so much trouble when I used it at the country club I used to work at. I "beeped" when I left one night while they were still serving dinner. :D The next day the GM of the CC yelled at me and I had to personally apologize to the people who complained. :o

would probally pull too much HP to get a compressor that is driven by the belt.

i have a set of airhorns (waiting to be installed). i think as long as you get the big horns with compressors running on 12V and a relay, you should be OK.

You could also look at putting in a small air storage tank with a solenoid and a switch to feed the air horn. The tank could be recharged using a standard valve stem fitting. This way there would be no need for a compressor. You would however want to consider keeping your stock horn functioning for times when the air was depleted.

does that interfere with the function of your radiator :confused: i doubt it would make a huge difference, but do you notice your engine runs a bit hotter on hot days?

It's cold here now, so I haven't noticed a thing. I doubt it will be a problem though. I'm running a cooler thermostat too, so I'm sure that will help too. I ran two horns for a long time with no problems, but if it does become an issue I'll just take the other two off and use them as part of my "winter driving package". ;)

beast... the one i have is by Grover and is off a peterbilt truck. My cousin drives em' for a living..makes out pretty good. But I have a 4 door bmw 318i. So unabomber you run of a compressor sotored in the trunk somewhere...plus where did you locate the tank for extra *get the hell outta my way* umph. Thanks.

No tank. Hellas are electric. I wanted to put more horns on, but I don't have any more room. :( My 100watt PA system will go in whenever I get off my lazy butt and install it. :)

crap I cant find any pics of mine showing. Im part of a Fire Department. I have a 100 watt electronic air horn. The speaker is behind the grille and there is a small box that is under my seat the runs it. Loud as hell and confuses the hell out of people becuase it sounds like a horn that most cops have.

i bet those are illegal for non FD and PD people to use lol.

These horns require a very expensive compressor and storage tank--plus relay, wiring, button etc. For example the commonly used truck "Bully-Horn" package is >$500. The train full-set-up can go as high as $2000. The air tank holds 50psi and requires constant filling.

Im not 100% sure but In CT at least Im pretty sure that anyone can have them. Its not considered a siern because it is a lower tone or something. Might want to check out your local laws for tone and how loud they can be. Either way, I wouldn't use it with a cop around.

So okay...air is a pain in the ass..since i already have subs in the back..hmm but so tempting..electric horns just as loud..if not louder.. Do they still have the, i dunno how to describe it really, that truck tone to it..?

You are not going to get the deep ass chest shaking honk like your talking out of an electric horn. They are usualy much higher pitched. The deeper tones require huge amounts of air that little compressors just cant put out.

Air horns are no problem at all. I currently have a air horn set up on my car. 2 horns on the passenger side and 1 one the drivers. Fiam air horns to be exact... you can buy them at most autoparts stores... they are just as good quality as Hella air horns.

As for electrical draw, I have the horns utilizing the stock horn wiring with no problems. I also run a good amount of audio equipment in my car, and still no problem. I have been using air horns in my car for 3.5 years now... I had them in my Prelude for a year before I wrecked it.

Super tones are nice, but they are very directional... I opted to use air horns blasting towards the corners since most of my horn use comes from a-holes not checking their blind spot... in fact... I put these on the day after a Ford Excurssion pushed me onto the shoulder because the stupid B driving was talking on a cell phone instead of paying attention... I had my POS stock horn blaring the whole time...
