View Full Version : guide me in thy direction
watcher in the sky 01-11-2005, 10:14 PM Never look in here, and I am fairly sure I will get a light flaming for not searching...
But, I have had engine problems as of late and see that it's gonna cost a pretty penny to fix from what has been diagnosed... so... Just for reference, lol, point me in the direction of what to get for a clean/drivable swap. 00rs with ej20t into it. I DO NOT need the tranny from wrx because I wont be killing it, but if it is a "have to do" then ok.
I have rod bearings and/or crank bearings gone, and more than likely worn crank... so basically some mechs have recommended just getting a new shortblock with all the internals with it (crank, rods, etc..) because of the labor cost anyways. And so far the cheapest we have found is $2k+. We could do it ourselves but dont have the time. So I am thinking, heck, if I am going to HAVE spend that much on just getting the "same" setup all over again, I might as well do what I want.
Like I said, just give me ideas and need to knows and prices... and a good lashing for not searching.
Thanks in advance.
watcher in the sky 01-13-2005, 02:29 PM Well ok...
Anyways, I have $2,500 to work with, +/-, and no need to worry about labor cost... so, where in the world is the best place to look for an ej20t? I have been looking for them on the net, but cant seem to find one, so I guess I suck at teh google..
Just a simple question, is 2.5k enough to work with? Just for the drivable proper swap?
its gonna be close
how are your negation skills
if you could find a complte front clip for 2000
you will still have lots of other costs like a clutch and crossmember
americanyouth 01-13-2005, 02:38 PM Sure why not.
I've seen motor+harness and ECU for $1500 before. Find someone who can help with wiring, factor in another 500-750 in misc costs and you should be alright.
linsavy 01-13-2005, 02:40 PM USDM EJ20T are selling pretty cheap these days. You will need an upgraded clutch, but the RS tranny should be fine. JRP in Toronto has good pricing and exports everywhere. $2300 Cdn will get a motor but you still need miscellaneous parts like xmember, exhaust, etc.
Your budget should cover it as long as the wiring is included in your free labor cost.
Try a search on engine suppliers in this forum as there are several reputable suppliers and you can find one closest to you.
watcher in the sky 01-13-2005, 05:27 PM Thanks alot for the info, makes me feel good when I get constructive replies, and even better to know I can more than likely afford the swap.
:)
edit: I cant read JRP site, lol...
Kreeger 01-13-2005, 11:04 PM Just to reassure your decision on keeping your stock RS tranny... I have a TS wagon with a STi version 7 swap pushing around 300whp and have run the stock tranny (with an upgraded clutch) all along, which is more than one year. I regularly drive it hard with no problems. Good luck.
scoobydorift 01-14-2005, 01:38 AM people regulary sell ej20's on here and on ebay..go to ebay and type "ej20" or "wrx engine" you will get like 2 pages worth of crappy stuff but like 1 or 2 good engines for pretty cheap. then all you will need is a turboback, gc8(the real one) front crossmember, new clutch(for a N/A), and some premuim fuel and you should be good to go.
Rick
there is still discussion on wether or not the "real gc8" crossmember is any differnt than the legacy turbo but yes i agree get the legacy turbo crossmember or the real one ~$140
scoobydorift 01-14-2005, 02:47 PM ohh....lol....i think the term gc8 gets thrown around here so much that people here "gc8" and they think of the RS. what i ment by the "real gc8" is a gc8 from japan....but yes turbo legacies crossmembers will work fine.
Rick :)
watcher in the sky 01-14-2005, 08:55 PM any diff in the price of the two? The xmembers that is.
greenemac2003 01-14-2005, 10:17 PM Where do you find the real gc8 xmember? Who sells them?
dentprone 01-15-2005, 02:29 PM get a legacy turbo suspension crossmember...i have one in my 99rs , its fits exactly right....they sell it at subaru dealers...people call it the engine x-member but its listed as a suspension part cuz the lower control arms and sway bar mount to it as well as the engine...its expensive from the dealer though...try the junkyards first!
speedyHAM 01-15-2005, 04:10 PM A WRX cross member will fit up as well, it just needs 3/16" worth of spacers to make the front control arms fit. and they are a lot easier to find for cheap. If you can find the engine with ECU and complete wiring harness for $1500 I'd be really suprised. But good luck with it anyway.
watcher in the sky 01-18-2005, 12:11 AM There is an ej207 from a v5 for sale in the vendor classifieds.. here http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8661910#post8661910
Please tell me this will work without spending loads of money to get going!
Hoping my stock radiator will work if it doesnt come with one, capacity wise. And and and and.. lol, I just have too much running through my head!
