View Full Version : Hydra = no cruise control right? Anything else?

I couldn't really find anything on the Element site regarding missing features when swapping out the stock ECU. I believe I read the cruise controls is out, yes? Anything else? DCCD? Air bags? What all does the stock ECU control other than fuel/timing/boost/other-engine stuff?

From what I understand that is the only thing missing. And it sounds like Phil isn't going to attempt to get it working again. Apparently he is very concerned with the resulting safety issues that a cruise control system on a drive by wire car has.

Cool. Do you know if the DCCD and airbags are controlled by the ECU? I'm just wondering how accurately the replication of those features would be. Might even be interesting to tweak the DCCD or add a yaw sensor to the 2004 (not that I imagine it is possible with current Hydra, does it have additonal external sensor inputs?).

Wouldn't you think that Subaru would have a more conservative attitude regarding safety than an aftermarket parts company?

I would to, but I guess that isn't the case this time.

Cruise is only thing that is absent.

Subaru is concerned with your safety but they use a separate computer for the cruise control where we would have to use the engine management computer. This would result in ignoring the pedal position while in cruise which is a safety issue since the throttle plate position would differ from the two accelerator position sensors. Normally when this happens a fail safe circuit is tripped in the Hydra as it would most likely mean a "stuck" throttle.

Thanks,

Thanks Phil. Any comment on how the airbags and DCCD work?

Ah. Thanks.

Non-DBW Hydras retain all factory features correct?

Non-DBW Hydras retain all factory features correct?

That is correct but remeber since there is no OEM computer there is no OBD2. All other features of the STI remain as they did from the factory, just no OBD2 and no cruise control.

Thanks,

Oh, so the CC computer is disabled with the Hydra, or is it just missing some inputs?

Only on the DBW cars, standard throttle cars retain cruise control.

DCCD is controlled by it's own logic unit. The airbags are controlled by little accelerometers that are part of the bag units, and replaced with the bag should it go off. Cruise is a nice feature that I've never had (can you believe that). I'll give it up anyday for the Hydra's flexability. OBDII would be nice for those States that use it, but I somehow doubt I could pass an emissions check by that mode of assessment.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
