Details:

Monitoring their car's tire pressures has allowed the world's top race teams to achieve peak performance and analyze potential tire problems before low air pressure could cause an accident or strand their driver by the side of the track. Their tire pressure monitoring system provides the early warning that allows them to correct simple problems before they become catastrophes.

Today you can have that same type of information in your vehicle with the 2nd Generation SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System from The Tire Rack. While it continues to serve as an early warning device that continually checks tire pressure while the vehicle is being driven, the 2nd Generation System is even more adaptable than the original system to better meet the needs of more vehicles. Optional displays and adapters (see list above right) available to finetune the installation for your vehicle. SmarTire Pressure Monitoring Systems alert drivers to small air pressure leaks, before they can become big problems.

So whether you drive around town, on the highway, or at the track, the 2nd Generation SmarTire System can be at your fingertips to warn you of air pressure loss. Additionally, by keeping tires inflated properly, you can maximize performance, fuel economy and tire life all at the same time. And this system can even help protect low profile tires mounted on large diameter wheels by identifying a drop in air pressure long before it becomes visually apparent.

The wireless tire air pressure sensors/transmitters weigh less than 1.5 oz. and are accurate to ±1.5 psi. Straps that accommodate 13” to 20” diameter wheels are used to securely band a sensor to each wheel before the tires are installed. The sensors/transmitters are equipped with motion detectors that turn them off when the vehicle is parked to prolong their lithium batteries' life (estimated at more than 5 years of normal vehicle use).

The system's receiver/display unit is placed within reach and sight of the driver. Within the first minute of driving, the system's sensors will broadcast a signal to the in-car receiver to confirm they are operating correctly. The receiver/display features a 12-volt power cord that can be plugged into the cigarette lighter or hardwired directly to a "keyed" power circuit.

The 2nd Generation SmarTire Tire Pressure Monitoring System is backed by a one-year/unlimited mileage manufacturer's warranty.

http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/accessories/2nd_gen_display_closeup.jpg (http://www.dpbolvw.net/click-1881633-10410329)The Basic Display System is capable of monitoring four tires and provides early warning of tire pressure loss while the vehicle is being driven.

The compact receiver/display mounts easily to the dash, windshield or center console. No programming is required, just plug in the power cord and the receiver is ready to go. The Basic Display System identifies each tire by its color code (a color coded sensor/transmitter is banded to each wheel along with a matching color coded “washer” that is attached to the tire valve).

If a tire’s air pressure drops to 22 psi, an LED on the display will turn red to identify the problem tire. The vehicle can be pulled to a safe location and the tire associated with the color adjacent to the red LED can be inspected. If air pressure continues to drop to 18 psi, the second level warning will activate an audible alarm and the LED will flash red.

You noticed that eh? :)

The Tire Rack and Safe Drives are affiliates, meaning that we kinda work together. If you use that link and purchase anything form the Tire Rack then Safe Drives makes a little bit on the sale.

We at Safe Drives did not want to have anything to do with mounting and balancing tires just yet and these guys have a great reputation for quality service and products.

How durable is it?
I know it gets put inside the tire, but what if you hit a pot hole or a speedbump to hard. how do the sensors take the extra punishment? And if one is damaged is there some sort of indicator?

I was wondering/hoping that if I ordered a set of wheels and tires from tirerack the monitor system could be installed at the time of mounting and balancing..

I would think that they would take a bunch of abuse since they are in tires, mounted on the wheels and were designed for that kind of enviroment.

If one sensor is not working you will get an alert on the display telling that you have problem.

Bootleg you have interpreted it pretty well I think. It looks like you have to manually manipulate the screen in order to view the tire pressure at a given moment. It will, as you pointed out, alert you if there is problem. If your on a track, at speed, the least amount of distractions the better. And at least get a roll bar and a harness set up! Sheesh, track days in a wimpy 3 point belt just scare me...

Stolen form the Tire Rack website is the full description of the display:

The ultimate in appearance and functionality, the Full Function Remote Display allows you to connect the receiver hidden out of sight (up to 6’ from the display) with a small remote display for a more integrated look.

In addition to providing early warning of tire pressure loss, the Full Function Remote Display monitors can provide detailed tire air pressure and contained air temperature information at the push of a button. The Full Function Remote Display is capable of monitoring four or more tires equipped with the wheel-mounted sensors/transmitters.

The Full Function Remote Display’s cable simply clips onto the Basic Display and allows SmarTireTM Tire Pressure Monitoring System’s capabilities to be custom programmed. Each axle’s recommended cold tire inflation pressure (default is 30 psi), pressure deviation alert (default is ±5 psi), low pressure warning (default is 18 psi), and high air temperature alert (default is 176° F), can be custom programmed.

Upon starting the vehicle and driving a few hundred feet, each tire’s cold inflation pressures can be checked and confirmed from the convenience of the driver’s seat. If a tire’s air pressure deviates from what is required, the display will identify the problem tire and the red alarm light will illuminate. The vehicle can be pulled to a safe location and the tire indicated can be inspected. If air pressure continues to drop to the low pressure warning level, the display will identify the problem tire, activate an audible alarm and flash the red alarm light.

I bought some SSR's and S03's with the SmarTire system installed over a year ago. I've tracked with it twice and found the system to be both durable and helpful during the track events and normal driving. Recenly, I began seeing warnings from one tire. After inspection I noticed a screw had penetrated the tire. I ended up tapping into the clock for power and mounting it inside the glove box. That way I can hear it and can view it easily. Highly recommended.

I'll be buying a set of wheels/tires/monitor system from tirerack, but what about come time when I need tire replacements at some local tire shop and the worker is jamming that fork into the tire to pull it off... is the monitor susceptible to damage then?

That is a very good question. The answer is no, don't worry about it. Your going to have basically a metal band with a small black box on part of it wrapped around the center most part of the wheel. The tire changer person won't even know it's there untill the tire is already off. :)

tirerack.com has the "2nd Generation Basic Display System"... is this the one for the wrx's?

Also, who has this and how did you mount the display? did you use the wiindshield suction cups, or did you buy the extension version and put the display somewhere else?

I'm pretty sure that any display will work with the WRX.

I'll let others comment on the mounting.

This is too bad... it sounded like a great system.

I just bought a new set of tires and wheels from TireRack and had planned on putting this system on the wheels at the time of purchase. At the last second of placing the order, I decided not to put them on. And even though I had the money for them, I still balked at the price. Now, I'm not saying it is too expensive for what you are getting, it just turned out that the $250+ price tag for the whole system didn't hold enough value to justify itself. Here's why:

- I recently bought a really nice $35 pressure gauge with quick connect, bleed valve, and pass thru; as a result, checking tire pressure is even easier
- I keep this gauge in the car, so if I felt a change in tire response (which, as enthusiasts, we try to hone that skill to some degree) then I would stop the car and check the pressures.
- Is saving 5 minutes/week worth the cost of the system? Answer came out: no... I'd rather spend the money on a Whiteline 22mm adj sway bar with endlinks.
- these things were light weight enough (and mounted as close to the center of the wheel as possible) so I wasn't worried about that

If there was some way to cut down on the system to bring the cost to a $100 price point, then I think I would have gone for it. Unless I was using it for a serious track car to monitor in-lap tire pressures, then the luxury of seeing all tire pressures at all times is more than I need. For the regular street joe, like me, what I really need is something more along the lines of those "warning valve caps", except better:

- reliable, accurate pressure sensors
- either set, or purchase a single specific pressure warning threshold; ie the "below 28 psi" warning threshold
- if wireless, only needs to send signal "below threshold or not"
