View Full Version : Keeping the factory warranty?

Is there anything I NEED to do at the dealer to keep my factory warranty? I do as much as I can myself; change the oil, check fluid levels, rotate tires, etc. I might bring it to the dealer for the 30,000 mile tune up, but I might undertake that one myself also.

I just got an email from the dealer saying: "It is very important that you keep up your factory recommended services in order to keep your factory warranty valid." I don't want to pay someone to do something I'd rather do, but is it voiding my warranty? Is this just BS from the dealer trying to make money off me?

I've got 16k miles on my '04 FXT that I bought one year ago, and I've done everything myself so far.

Keep the receipts for the oil and filter, so you can prove the service was done.

..."It is very important that you keep up your factory recommended services in order to keep your factory warranty valid." ...
You've got to carefully decode the "dealerspeak": "factory recommended services" DO have to be done, but it doesn't say anywhere that the factory (or dealer) has to be the one doing them. All it is saying is that the various periodic maintenance services specified in your manual need to be done.
As noted above, if you are doing them yourself, keep a log of what you do, the date, and receipts for any consumables (like oil, filters, etc).

Like posted above, just make sure you keep all your receipts and make sure they have the date and mileage on them from when the components were replaced. Just marking the services off in your book is not substantial evidence that the services were done. It might also be a good idea to log the services in mysubaru.com. This way they can tell you were adding the services when they were done and not all at once.

Also remember that you have full 3/36 coverage on your vehicle, like the wipers and the bulbs and brakes. These things get checked when you go in for a simple oil change and if they find something wrong they will cover it for you. It might be a good idea to go to the dealer once and awhile for a simple oil change so these things can be checked. If you think about it, after you buy the filter, o-ring and the oil and spend the time doing it, it might be worth the $25.00 or so to have the dealer do it.
