View Full Version : Where can I get some plexi?
DanMan 07-11-2001, 12:48 PM Hey guys,
I've been assembling the stuff for my stereo install in my WRX. I need some thin plexiglass for my amp rack but I don't want to have to order it online. What type of place carries this stuff (beyond stereo install shops).
Thanks,
Dan
Concillian 07-11-2001, 12:56 PM Around here you can get it in local hardware stores.
I dunno about the big ones like Home Depot, but I know I've seen it at Orchard Hardware (it's like True Value or ACE...I dunno what you have in your area of the country)
kunfuzion 07-11-2001, 01:48 PM i know that home depot has some. what thickness are you looking for? the thickest i've seen was 3/4" in varing sizes of sheets, they had very thin sheets but they warp with very little heat. hope that helps.

HoratioCaine 07-11-2001, 01:58 PM A buddy of mine wanted to make a box out of 3/4" plexi until he saw the price tag on a 4x8' sheet. At the time it was just over $800 a piece. So he went with mdf and a fiberglass wrap.
Try glass shops. They should have it too.
Around here: Tap Plastic. They have any thickness, size, color and cut you want. Not sure if you have them in your area.
DanMan 07-11-2001, 03:00 PM Cool, thanks guys. I'm not building my box out of that (I'd rather spend money on equipment ;)). I just need some thin sheets to use as "windows" so you can see the amps, caps, and distribution blocks through my amp rack.
GooseMan 07-11-2001, 04:27 PM I might be able to help you! I work at a shop that makes sheet metal cabinets and enclosures, and we use ALOT of plexiglas for the doors and stuff. See? http://www.electronmetal.ca/images/s2000.jpg
We always have scrap peices lying around. mostly smoked, but some clear. I can send you some, but you gotta pay shipping! I live in Montreal.... :( They might have scratches, but I can try to find some good peices. Let me know!

DanMan 07-11-2001, 04:42 PM Hey, thanks for the offer Jon, I appreciate it. Lemme check around the area first cuz waiting for it to come in the mail would just kill me (you all know how it is). :)
GooseMan 07-11-2001, 05:11 PM No prob dude...I'll be here!
Shipping won't be too bad. I just shipped out a few skidplates all over the US, and it comes out to around $20-30 US for 4 days shipping.....lemme know! :)
MY99 2.5GT 07-11-2001, 05:35 PM Can you get .5" - .75" Plexiglass? I only need like 6 sqaure feet of it. Unlike Dan Man, would like to build a full plexi box to show off the cool looking magnet and vented pole piece on the Audiobahn AWT12 I just bought. Check it out.

Let me know. I would definitely be willing to pay for shipping. thats no big deal.
Thanks
Brad
GooseMan 07-11-2001, 05:40 PM sorry dude...we only have thinner plexi. Its around 0.25" thick. :( I dont think it'll be good for more than a small window or something...its not stiff enough for a box. And I dont have scrap that large!! 6 sq. feet is pretty big!! sorry.....I cant "steal" that much from the company!! ;)
travman733 07-12-2001, 10:41 AM Ah ha...found the bookmark...

They have up to 1" plexi (clear) and a bunch of cool stuff you may need for an install (once I start my install they're definitely gonna be my choice).
DanMan 07-12-2001, 11:00 AM SP has great stuff no-doubt, but be careful cuz shipping charges can nip you in the ass. Also, you can usually find everything SP sells for much less if you look around hardware stores (particularly fiberglass).
adeck 07-12-2001, 12:40 PM Don't buy plexi, get lexan it costs a little bit more but is much stronger to work with.
