View Full Version : CEL Fix?

So after installing a STi uppipe on my wrx, a C.E.L popped on. So I read some of the post saying if you pop a resistor in the absent O2 censor plug, that would cure it. My question is...what is the difference between popping a .20 radio shack resistor than a perrin 30USD C.E.L fix? ...besides $29.80

If you can get the right resistor then there is no difference, but just any old resistor won't do.

Look for a 1/2 watt or bigger (should say on the package) resister that's color bands are red, red, red, gold or silver. Be certain they are red and not orange.

.... just to double check, you just bend the wire ends of the resistor and insert them into the the place where the plug was suppose to be, then do I need to reset my computer to take off the CEL?

Pretty much. I would add a piece of electrical tape to the end of the EGT plug to make sure the resistor stays put.

It goes into the plug that you disconnect the EGT sensor from.

Not as cheap as some of the mechanical fixes I've seen.

Anyone know whether or not you get a CEL if you leave the third cat in place? I've had trouble finding a straight answer.

a bit of an OT question about CEL,

a few days ago I had a knock... the CEL flashed once and died off...

problem is solved, I uploaded new maps to the utec and its running strong and smooth...

however, whenever I want to start the car, the CEL would blink 2-3 times and lighted up steady like it always did...

does this mean the CEL is still "stored" in the ECU or utec? and probably waiting to be scanned so that the blinking CEL before starting up the car will go away?

hrm........ weird thing is........... i have a cat-less uppipe and I didn't get any CEL... ???

feiron the CEL light flashes to indicate which map is loaded when you turn the ignition key. For example, if you have map 2 selected, it will flash 2 times then go steady for startup. Give it a second to prime the fuel and for the UTEC to initialise properly.

Check page 16 of the UTEC manual ;)

You might not get the CEL for a while. But it will appear.

2.2KOhm 1/2Watt resistor.

I have catless uppipe too and no CEL for this past 5 months

it's been 1 and a half year for me... and no CEL

What uppipes do you have?

Are you guys saying that you have done no resistor mod and you have not got any related CEL?

I have a gruppe-S up-pipe... when they used to sell it anyways... and nope, I haven't got ANY CEL regarding the issue...

First of all, you must be talking about the EGT probe and NOT the 02 sensor !! the first 02 sensor, if you take it out, you are seriously messing with the car's running.... the EGT CEL is not a 'critical one', but the resistor fix will work. The 02 CEL fix is for the SECOND 02, not the first 02 !!!!! You can also remap them out and keep the right CELs still working.

I have an up-pipe, downpipe and exhaust. My light turned on a couple days after the mods. But I was told that it was from the 2nd O2 sensor. After a couple of weeks I took the sensor out, cleaned it, and disconnected the battery. After hooking the battery back up and replacing the sensor, the light was off and stayed off for a couple of weeks. Then after some smashing around for a couple weeks it turned back on.

Now, about three months later, the light flashes. It idles fine, but sounds like it is misfiring when you try to hit the gas. I replaced the fuel filter, thinking that it might be clogged, but that wasn't it.??????

Sometimes you can go months without throwing a cel, other times it wil pop on in a day. Depends on driving habits.

Go to Main St. elec., RP elect., or Future/Active, get the 2.2K 1% resistor, spud it into the chasis end of the wiring loom, and you will never see this CEL again.:) Also good idea to use a little dielectric grease for anti-corrosion on contacts and shrink wrap or tape it up real well.

Also, get a like sized bolt, pull the probe and plug the hole. Some say the extra velocity in the up pipe after removing cat may cause the 3/32 probe to break off and grenade your turbo. Some say that's BS. Either way, it is not needed any more so why leave it in and take the chance?

The Cel is trying to tell you that the up pipe cat is toast and needs to be replaced...wahahahaha ha ha.

Not bad for $2.50 and half an hours work.

If it helps I can take a few pics of mine to give you the location. Let me know...
