Have any of you hit a funk where you're no longer interested in cars? Modifying them?

heard of growing up lol

I rem my first teg, bought every bolt on available for performance, plus decked out on the sound system.

Now I just do performance mods to the suby that'll reallly gain real substanstial power. I'm suprise you're in a funk YOUNG fukamoto.

I've had periods where my car was just a car. I had no plans to dump more money into her but then the fire starts all over again. I dunno, I guess I will always love the GC :)

haha, if i still had my car id still be into cars...im thinking of throwing the icbc cheque into a downpayment for a place...the car took too much of my time :(

i wonder if hypa/tora and the older guys hit a funk and what they did...

yeah me too instead of paying my mortgage in advance i buy some stuff for my car 1st...and i always say to my self that this is the last part i will be gettin' for my car and there's a new parts in town that i want to get my hands on...heck... :devil: get the 05 wrx..

I hear you! I am 29, when I was younger I spent huge dollars on cars,trucks, and bikes. I don't regret any of it, it was way too much fun. I had to work alot though to pay for them. I don't think you'll ever lose interest though, your priorities will just change. For the last 4 years I drove a junker and saved everything I could to buy a house and was able to purchase my first house this weekend. I don't drive a big dollar car anymore but I love my GC and the fact that I own the spot that I park it in. :banana:

I go through stages but I've just found that my interest changes as I mature (well....get older...I don't really mature). The older I get the more I prefer sleeper mobiles.

You'll soon learn that your own pad attracts a lot more chicks than a car. :D ...and a lil wapce always gets you back into cars quick. :p

I'm 24 now and I'd gone through the same thing many many times, more like a fever that came back every single year. Once I thought about selling everything and work somewhere else. Once I thought about selling this wrx and get a POS civic for transport. Once I thought about getting a S2000 to enjoy the summer. Once I thought about getting a new Boxster after watching "Paris Hilton" the simple life. But everything went away after being humiliated by pricks on Highway with Audi, honda, acura...etc.

I'm looking at houses now and trying to get myself into huge debts that I probably won't be able to repay the bank. Anyhow, my plan is to get a house now and keep my weekend hobby -- washing and polishing my car !! :banana:

I bought a TS which meant I didn't blow the bank and a couple years later I bought a place. I spent my whole weekend working on cars, but I have to go back to my parents place to do it. My day job has me sitting infront of a computer screen all day and sometimes it's nice to pick up a wrench for a change.

Of course, it took me over a year to figure out why my Audi 4kq was running open loop but Saturday I finally went over all the wiring and figured out that when I'd rebuilt the head I plugged the ISV into the WOT/Idle switches and vice versa. Made me feel like a dolt for not finding it earlier but hey, now it should pass aircare.

werd...been in this "funk" for the past 6 months. Reason why i'm looking for new springs is to make the ride more enjoyable, not for cosmetic purposes. After that i'm officially done.

ive been into cars since i was a little kid. and till now (29), i still havent lost interest in cars. i sometimes wish i wasnt so into it coz there are obviously much better things to do with your money.

but no regrets in the end and the only thing i really get bored of is the car itself and i find myself wanting to change the car after 2 or 3 years.
modifying is alwyas a must :)

I don't know - at this point, if I had a lot more money, I would think that a lot of that will still go to a car - just not sure whether it's this one or another. Sure having your own pad is nice but at the same time, I don't like living alone - although I feel like at this stage I should invest in a place and just rent it out, except I'm not done yet :D

Theres a certain level of adrenalin I used to get...wouldn't be able to sleep two nights before I get a part installed; I'd read for hours about ONE part I was interested in; I read every forum about turbo RS's in nasioc.com/i-club.com/rs25.com and such. I got such a high racing whether it was at Mission or an organized street..umm..race. haha. I find driving my dad's Murano so much fun...I'm high off the ground, leather seats and steering wheel etc.

I found myself lovin' sleeper cars as well now :( Now I understand why all the geezer's say form>function. I'm tempted to find a 92-95 Civic shell and do it up or a 72 Datsun Z :(

I've always been into the sleepers. Hence my 86 Audi 4000 quattro that I still eventually want to swap a turbo motor into. Looks like an 80s Jetta but would have ~230bhp and AWD. It'd be so much fun to pwn a WRX with it. heh Right now it's a slug with the 300+k km 115bhp engine though. The only thing it pwns in it's current state is ricer flybys thanks to the chopped airbox. :lol: Then again it's served me well for TSD and rallyx. Actually, in 2/3 rallyxs it did pwn it's class, including WRXs. :D

No loss of interest here...

But I mean, I'm barely able to go to the bar in the states so I figure I've still got plenty of years to be bitter.

To be honest, i am planning in buying an apartment next year too(23). I am not interested in car as before like a car maniac. Right now, all i want for my car is the look and stereo.

I think modding car is for rich boyz and too bad i am not one of them, but i don't blame my parents for that. :( When you have money, then you can have fun of your car, not me.

When I can afford a car that does not need to be modded then I'll stop :devil: ferrari :devil: . I just started with my new car but I am still playing with my old one also. I need a catless tbe on my impulse next :banana: . I am by far more interested in driving then modding, The modding just complements the driving experience ( 99% of mods I do are performance related).

"OT'' The only "funk" I am in right now is work related. I am having a hard time managing my business (At times I have to turn down customers and/or send them to another company because our we're busy 7 days a week). I may have to go back to school for accounting and business management thoes are the two area's I am having problem's with.

The funk comes and goes.
Over the years I've learned that this is the time for the funk. It's ugly outside, the cars are dirty and wet. Wheels and tires are stored in the attic, and testing any sort of performance mods are limited to traction and the road surface. It's cold, it's wet, and it's ugly outside. I'd rather sip Scotch while playing Grand Theft Auto than putting the car in the air to work on wet brakes.

Just wait until the spring comes and the sun starts shining again. If you don't find yourself interested in cars, then move on. You're young enough, and driven enough that if you truly love cars (which I think you do after the AVO install ;) ) you'll be back. Maybe a vacation from cars would be nice, especially after the tragic demise of your project.

I am more methodical now than I used to be. Used to be out there in all weathers tinkering around, now I just let parts sit on the desk, until I have it all planned out properly and I go out when it suits me.

Being a homeowner changed it I think and getting married. Now I have so much stuff on the go I like to try and balance it all which is fun!

I think getting children in the next few years will take it up another notch!

It's all about a balance I think. I fly remote control airplanes, do home theatre stuff, read books, HiFi stuff etc etc

I never hit the funk with Rallying, it's a passion i've had since watching the group B cars fly past my house in Wales. baarp baaarp Anti Lag.....

The UTEC got me hooked big time with tinkering with the car again and I can't wait for summer to come around for more mods and for some wicked camp trips.

It all comes down your reasons for modifying a car. If its a hobby/interest then its ok to spend the money you want to on your car, b/c it you will get a certain satisfaction from it. That being said, just watch what you spend your money on. Do we REALLY need the mods we put on the car? No, not really... well sometimes it is nessisary :devil:. People have interests and like to spend their hard earned money on it (cars, clothes, collections, games...pr0n). However, if your looking to impress the ladies with da pimp ride derek, then thats a lost cause, b/c your always going to be Derek no matter how pimp your ride is :) j/j.

I'll always WANT to mod my car, making it go a bit faster than a turtle, making it look nicer etc, but its just a hobby and my money wont allow me to do so :)

About the house morgage, just marry a gf with a rich daddy, and do what the chinese call eat soft rice and moochy moochy :p

Fo shizzle I need a rich gf. Well I dump so much money into my car for my own satisfaction anyways. I rarely go and show off my car or god forbid try to pick up girls with her. I have other hobbies too it's just that the car takes up most of my time and money.

I'm 41 and I guess a 'geezer' by the standards of this board, but I've always loved cars. I've never really had the time or inclination to mod, but I have many interests that take time (and you will get more as time goes on too). I'm married, have a house, and now young children; I scuba dive, camp/hike, and enjoy woodworking; and of course work always is a heavy time demand. I'm fortunate to be able to afford all these things, but that is a result of a lot of hard work and being cautious with my money. I think that's the main piece of advice I'd give to anyone - live within your means, stay out of debt where possible, drive what you can afford. If you do this for a few years, and get in the habit of living this way, you won't find yourself crushed under debt and out of options by 29, 39, or whenever. It sounds kind of grim, but a little self control early on goes a long way later.

Modding makes most sense when you are young, have lots of time, but not much money (assuming you buy a cheaper vehicle and don't get out of control with mods). Your current 'funk' is probably only natural given what appears to be a huge amount of work in to your car, only to have it disappear in an instant - disheartening.

For me, I've been lucky enough to have an RX7, Porsche 911, and now the STi over the last few years - modding has really not been necessary for my enjoyment of these cars. Although, now that I've started autox, that might change! :lol:

I'd say buy the real estate and then work your way back into modifying cars.

I have to say that owning my house is the best feeling I've had so far. I am just about finished building my 2 car garage for my cars to stay warm and dry - home reno's can become a passion as well (and more expensive then your car!).

Currently, I have many projects on the go... After moving up from the auto protege5 I am really loving the options for my WRX. But I gotta keep it under budget. That's what home ownership (and a big ass wedding) does to your hobbies :)

Now, on the topic of work, like Impusle777 I am also very busy. Being self employed is also a little crazy and requires some passion for your job.

I hear ya Fuka, Ive sort of hit the wall for modding street cars too, dont get me wrong I love modding ,I think Im just getting bored of street cars ,they are a lot of fun ,but you rarely get a chance to really push them enough to make the large investment worth it.
personally Im looking for a 03 Jeep Rubicon to mod now , I really like 4x4's because you can go just about any where with them, mud ,snow,sand, rocks ,small lakes (he he :devil: ), Ive had 3 jeeps before and really miss total freedom one offers. But once your a modding junkie its hard to stop, Ive still got my TSD car and have plans for a drag car in the next year or two, Im starting to like the idea of having a dedicated car for motorsports. Either way its a big investment ,my advice buy a house or a condo "take care of buisness first" and then get some fun toys.

I guess i'm kinda on the opposite side of many of you guys... I'm only 19 this year so modding has really only just begun with me. But then again, once you get older, you realize how big a part money plays in life. When you're young, you can think "i want this or that" but it doesn't really hit you how far away those dreams really are. That's why it'll probably be a while before i start anything on he LGT. Patience is the key...

I guess everyone has to go through diff. stages. I never thought of selling my GC after 6 long years, putting so much time and money into it. Girl friend always complain I spent more time on the car then her, and always find me in the garage fixing stuffs or waxing the car. It was always fun modding the car and doing all the install yourself. But then priority changed and I realize i have to start saving for a house. I eventually stop modding and sold the car. And who will guess that i bought another GC after 6 months my car was sold;) I guess I miss the GC too much. I just need to be more self-control - not putting all the money into car:)

My ex-girlfriend used to hate it when I modded cars, so I did it to spite her. Now my current girlfriend supports me, so..........theres no rebellion factor ;)

I think it is all about priority in different stages of life. I am always a car enthusiastic person, but there is time in life some other things are just much more important. It could be school, could be marriage, raising a family or an investment, etc. Follow your heart and don't over extend yourself is the key.

When the right time arrive, that fire will come again.

real estate is definately a good option, the value of developed land almost always goes up while the value of a car goes down... getting extra tens of thousands is common for homes (buy land, develop it, build a house on it...reap benefits)

edit: note: I dont do this but my father does on a regular basis and I just know what he tells me..

My past is just like u Fuka. My current gf doesn't complain me modding but she just remind me to watch out for my monthy budget everytime i want to buy something.

From what I can gather from reading many posts here is that most of you are into modding your cars. That's cool but I bought my car to drive it more than modding it. I love to push the car (within reason) and a wrx can be pushed more than some other cars out there.
I love it when I'm heading up the Sea to Sky highway,for example, and hearing my tires squeal as I round the many twists and turns. My heart rate is up, my eyes are focused on the road ahead and the concentration that I must have in order to make it to my destination makes driving exciting and addictive. I like being able to control the car to my best of my ability and to improve my driving skills every time I go for a drive. Also, going on long road trips makes driving fun. I have travelled around most of western Canada and western US on road trips.
This makes cars fun for me and I don't see myself getting tired of doing this.

Hope you'll gain appreciation for you car again.

That funk comes and goes for me, and i'm young. I find that in the winter, it is a lot stonger, like Hypa said.

It kind of explains why I spent > $200 on a PS2 accessory 3 days ago..Took the money out of my car fund too :D.

I think we all need another hobby besides just cars and modifying them, otherwise you might get bored with it, or if somehting happens, you might not have anything to do.

seriously though.. i'm too young to lose interest in cars. i don't think i ever will. clearly things like a house etc. will eventually be more important than spending money on a car. but for the moment, its school, and a car.

I wish I had money to mod a car when I was in school. My mods consisted of fixing it when it broke down. :lol:

I never bothered with my first car seeing that 1) I don't have the money to mod it and 2) I know I'll be getting rid of it once I get a job

Oh, you mean my cousin;) He used to drive the RX-7 and now a TT Supra. He is a hell of a crusher if you ask me.

We all obviously have the sickness, it comes and go's in cycles. If you can, get out while your ahead. Otherwise quit whining and start racing...
