View Full Version : Anyone running a APS DR65 turbo? ljaviation 01-24-2005, 11:16 PM Looking for some feedback on a possible new setup..... any info would be appreciated. LJ STi_Guy04 01-25-2005, 05:14 AM Yea I wish  ummm... APS just released a Transmission to support that power. I read the turbo spool over 580+hp by 4500 RPMS at 14.5 PSI. that`s along time to wait. along with that your going to need many many parts to support But I guess it depends on what kind of goals you have for your car like track car, drag car and so on <----I still dont understand the BananaMaN  Yea I have no clue, what type of turbo to buy for my car.. Maybe the SR55 If it can spool early enough Like 3,500. anyone have any clue on this or what?? I`am going to use the EcuTek flashing with the DeltaDah unit For E.M ;) Selecting a will be one of my last mods seeing that they can get pretty expensive but I would figure out what type of car your trying to build and consult some professionals from there ;) XT6Wagon 01-25-2005, 06:22 AM Get your GT35R some other way. The APS kit has alot of issues that other kits don't. Not really thier fault as thier cars have a bunch of steering and brake crap in the way of better turbo placement. happasaiyan 01-25-2005, 07:58 AM I`am going to use the EcuTek flashing with the DeltaDah unit For E.M ;) delta dash is not a proper EM. its a logging tool for the most part. ljaviation 01-25-2005, 10:10 AM Nobody around has done one yet?..... I was hoping a vendor might chime in with their shop car results. I am pretty impressed with Kingpin's numbers with the Garrett, I'll give them that. Someone on these boards has had to do one by now.... no? Jayhawker 01-25-2005, 11:41 AM Call Rich at DynoComp. 480-596-0500. He has that set up on his STI and last month they were speculating 560 awhp "UNTUNED" because they had a new motor (2.5 with built bottom end) installed and needed to break it in. Joe frequents the forums sometimes so he might be able to chime in. They are great tuners and have bent over backwards for me. Coming in on Saturdays when they are closed, staying late, etc.... ljaviation 01-25-2005, 01:37 PM I E mailed them a little over a week ago on their website and have not received a response. I will give them a call. Kingpin 01-25-2005, 03:28 PM Get your GT35R some other way. The APS kit has alot of issues that other kits don't. It uses the smaller GT30 turbine wheel with the GT35 Comp. It also uses an APS Turbine housing that holds you back. APS makes nice products with good fit and finish but I find alot of it is over engineered, overpriced and falls short on the performance. Also. Internal gate will hold you back. There is an option for an external gate at more cost. Clark XT6Wagon 01-25-2005, 03:46 PM It's not even a pure GT35R? Ouch. I was guessing it was as the compressor cover looks like a GT35R cover painted red. With a small GT30 turbine wheel, I don't see how they expect to make power. Kind of like running a 502 bigblock chevy with a 2" catback exhaust. And my main issue was the downpipe section on it.... before hearing that. My main problem with APS products "in general" is that many of them fail in one of three area. "good idea", "good design", "good physical object". IE thier rotated mount may have all the best parts, and its a good design given the RHD constraint, IMO it fails in the "good idea" area where they poorly selected the turbo size. Which isn't to say there isn't some very good items in thier lineup that are done correctly IMO. Kingpin 01-25-2005, 03:56 PM I have held one in my hand that was the -14 cart. GT30 Turbine GT40 Compressor. I did read on the APS side that the kit has a 68mm turbine wheel which means it is a GT35R cart. But the one I saw was not. Maybe they changed it. If you look at the pics they use a smaller then 4 inch inlet on the compressor and they use the way to small .63 AR old T3 turbine housing. Or T3 style turbine housing. Its not the GT Conical exit 3 inch exit housing as they have more depth to them. Its a compromise turbo. Also. No GT35R is available with an internal gate for good reason. Like I said. I like APS STuff. Its very well made and the parts are cast which mean they should last. If you want a bling factory apearing setup then APS is a good way to go. I used to run APS STuff. But if you want max power then look elsewhere. When you get down to performance you realize its not the best setup. The Casting for example wicks away more heat rather then holding it in like alot of people think. Certain Grades of SS are far better. That downpipe makes a HARD turn down and limit flow. c bboy 01-25-2005, 04:45 PM Phil Grabow of Element Tuning was tuning a DR65 last week. He posted some logs--I remember from the logs that turbo was maxing out even the 816 cc/min injectors. I talked with Phil today and the owner is coming to pick up the car tomorrow. Cya Clark XT6Wagon 01-25-2005, 06:18 PM Clark, what do you think about running a push-pull fuel system with a 255lph pump in-tank, and a 255lph external right before the fuel rails. I was thinking this would be a easy way to get more flow as the pressure across each pump would be lower, thus making for a much higher flowrate than a single pump setup. Also the pressure loss of the stock fuel lines would be less of a factor. ljaviation 01-25-2005, 06:44 PM Very nice info and noted. So a GT35R is the best performer so far? I would like to hear from Phil or his customer on the results of the DR65 for comparison. Also, aren't these GT35R's hard to come by because they are so popular right now? Clark, thanks for the info... everyone please keep it coming L J Kingpin 01-25-2005, 06:46 PM Eric. What I found in my research is that its not so much the flow limitations. Its the flow at Very high pressures. As a result I found that twin in tank Walbros was the best solution at hand. They are cheap and simple to install and you can run both off the stock fuel pump controller. They only pull about 7 amps each for a total of 14 amps. The Supra pump pulls 12-13 amps alone for example. You can run a Boost a pump on a single walbro if you wish but its cheaper to just install twins. On ECUtek setups we try to keep the fuel pump controler On Map based setups we wire the pumps direct with a relay. 43 static pressure plus 30 psi of boost is 73 psi or there abouts. A single walbro chokes off at 70 and above. So much that you cant supply enough fuel for 800CC's. I have found that the 05 STI with the intake fuel filter and no fuel filter under the hood flows much better though. Not sure why but they do. On these cars a single walbro does the trick. Clark XT6Wagon 01-25-2005, 07:53 PM Clark, that was the reasoning behind the push-pull arrangement. The flow at 30psi is alot higher than 60psi. So if you have one pump only taking part of the load of pressurising the fuel, and the other finishing the job... I see your point about the stock fuel pump controler though. XtianLA 01-26-2005, 11:38 PM Check with Roshan at Brainstorm. They are doing a DR series right now on an STI. I can't remember though if it's a 65. |
