View Full Version : Which BOV?
ranger5oh 01-25-2005, 10:37 AM Hey, I know there are probably posts about this, but the search on here isnt very good. Trust me, I tried.... Anyway...
I am in the market for a BOV for my 2005 STi. Which one is safe to get, and will not cause stalling etc.
Honestly, I am looking for the cool noise and I know they dont give performance or anything... just like the noise.
Also, I plan on buying a Cobb AP and just running Stage 1, at least for a few months. Any issues with this + BOV??
Thanks guys!
cnstman 01-25-2005, 10:50 AM wow, i just did a search and found 500 results for BOV. better search again. i did another search for BOV just in the 2.5 L turbo section and found 412 results.
f4phantomii 01-25-2005, 01:01 PM Or you could have looked in the Newbie forum and checked out UnaBomber's Manifesto at the top of the forum.
The BOV FAQ is at the very top of his list!
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=468038
But I'll give you the short version.....keep the stock BOV and spend your money on mods that add performance. Let me guess...your previous car was a DSM where changing the BOV *was* a performance mod? Not so much so with the Subarus.

ranger5oh 01-25-2005, 01:20 PM No, my last ride was an 03 350Z (needed a back seat). I have no experience with Turbos, thats the problem.
Maybe I suck at the search? Dunno.
paperchasin 01-25-2005, 01:25 PM if u want whhhooooosshhh...theres turbo xs rfl and blitz. If you want a hybrid, go for a worx tuning...if u want a whistle sound, u have HKS and Greddy...hope that helps...
PeteDucati 01-25-2005, 01:25 PM If you add a short ram intake, you'll get a nice whistle from your turbo spooling while accelerating, and a decent whoosh when your BPV valve recirculates.. not too loud, but loud enough that I do NOT miss my BOV.
dr_wheel 01-25-2005, 01:27 PM bov + wrx = rice
BOXER28 01-25-2005, 05:29 PM bov + wrx = rice
wow!!!! i dont think sooo.. i have a perrin bov. it doesnt vta.. Even though it recirculates you can hear it from the intake, no big woooshhhh sound... and it holds more boost then stock.. how is that rice????
Boostfiend04STI 01-25-2005, 05:33 PM I have an HKS bov with the recirc kit. Before I had the recirc I had nose dive between shifts and the whoosh was cool for about 9.8546762 seconds, then I got sick of it. With my intake and BOV recirculating I get enough sound that it satisfies me. I also hold 16.5 lbs of boost, before the mods, 15. I don't know if this is just the weather or an annomoly but it's consistant.
g0tb00st 01-25-2005, 05:36 PM HKS+Recirc kit works great!!! That gets my vote. Or, go with the WORX Tuning BOV.
bostonstifly 01-25-2005, 06:14 PM I would BY Pass the BOV...Get a KN Typhoon or Short Ram.
dr_wheel 01-25-2005, 06:27 PM wow!!!! i dont think sooo.. i have a perrin bov. it doesnt vta.. Even though it recirculates you can hear it from the intake, no big woooshhhh sound... and it holds more boost then stock.. how is that rice????
let me rephrase...
getting a recirculating bov/bpv for a modified car running high levels of boost is not rice.
getting a tinker toy for nothing more than the ability to hear pppsssssshhhh is rice.
BOXER28 01-25-2005, 07:30 PM allright i can agree with that.....
ranger5oh 01-25-2005, 10:00 PM Ok, Ive been reading... Im buying a Typhoon. F it.. youve convinced me! :)
import111 01-25-2005, 10:36 PM That is the way to go. 12whp gain and you will get the sound you want.

get tyhoon first, and if you think it is not enough, get worx bov. then get UTEC and TBE. you will see some ricey flames shooting out your tail pipe, i think it is more cool than the pshh sounds from BOV
by the way, even 100% atmo bov do no harm to the car except the 2 cats, just go catless and be worry free.
i did the oppsite way though, since tyhoon hasn't out yet when i bought my car :p
ranger5oh 01-26-2005, 10:23 PM ok, so now just trying to find a good price on a typhoon.... will a 2004 sti typhoon intake fit on a 2005????
kool168 01-27-2005, 12:23 AM ok, so now just trying to find a good price on a typhoon.... will a 2004 sti typhoon intake fit on a 2005????
why not?

Hey Ranger!
Its Krinkov from the my350Z, welcome to the fold!:D
anyhow, definitly go for the intake first, you will probably be happy with the sound there, if you just need more try a 50/50 type BOV like the APS:)
If you like the noise, don't mind loosing that little bit of measured air, take the hose off the stock valve--instant BOV, no money.
blinguskahn 01-27-2005, 05:04 AM http://www.spdusa.com/blow-off_valves.htm
Yeah Peaty, exactly my point. ranger5oh , please read that article and keep your stocker unless you are going to run high boost.
awilson529 01-28-2005, 08:38 AM It's so nice to have a n00b that actually listens to others advice!!! :)
Thank you ranger5oh,
Adam
asianhulk 01-28-2005, 12:34 PM ok, so now just trying to find a good price on a typhoon.... will a 2004 sti typhoon intake fit on a 2005????

Hey Krinkov, thanks for all that great advice on My350z.com! (still the best made forum out there, no flaming intended, just a killer setup)
Sweet.. im in the process of buying an intake now. Thanks for the advice. I hate being a noob. Ask me about a 350Z and I can tell you ANYTHING!
ciao,
Andy.
MarcsRX 01-28-2005, 06:05 PM I would say that the best blowoffvalve is the stock one. Dont waste your money unless 25+ PSI. Save for exhaust or EM
boostsr20 01-29-2005, 03:08 AM If you like the noise, don't mind loosing that little bit of measured air, take the hose off the stock valve--instant BOV, no money.
I can't believe you just typed that. Please go research the difference between a Recirc valve and a Atmospheric valve. Oh yeah, stop spreading misinformation too while your at it

he had to be kidding:p
White 2.5rs 01-29-2005, 03:35 AM hehe it worked for me :)
im also map based and it leaked everytime i was in boost unless i was WOT
but it was nice for what it was , a cheap leaking atmos bov :)
boostsr20 01-29-2005, 11:46 AM he had to be kidding:p
Even if he is, Its not cool to spread misinformation to a guy that admits he's new to the turbo game. Especially when said misinformation can do damage to his engine. :)
Leonardo 01-29-2005, 12:01 PM So the Typhoon is THAT good?
boostsr20 01-29-2005, 12:29 PM So the Typhoon is THAT good?
Its better than a BOV as a first mod. It will make slightly more HP and enable you to hear the Stock recirc valve/turbo more.
ranger5oh 01-29-2005, 02:10 PM Ok, i just bought a typhoon for $220 shipped... seems about cheapest I could find. Cant Wait!
roadtalontsi 01-30-2005, 06:09 AM he's not spreading bad information. If you just unplug that hose and plug it. Poof it vents to atmosphere and is loud. Now he didn't tell the full truth in saying it leaks slightly and drivability will suffer as well.
As far as a bov. if you decide to get one. The hks is definately one of the better if you plan to vent w/o em. Its the only pull type bov all the others are push type, which means it cant leak. That is unless some new dorm room racing company has jocked its design.
Just because people are ranked as noobs doesn't mean a thing. Most people who are smart just prefer to not waiste there time with such ignorance that runs rampant. thus low post count.
nhluhr 01-30-2005, 06:15 AM Ok, Ive been reading... Im buying a Typhoon. F it.. youve convinced me! :)
<golf clap>
Good choice.

nhluhr 01-30-2005, 06:30 AM I got mine for $240 from summitracing - of course, this was back before they got popular and every company in the world decided to pick them up.
blinguskahn 01-30-2005, 04:08 PM What!?!?!? People dont like the WORX or what?
Leonardo 01-31-2005, 09:49 AM E-Bay has some good deals. Might grab one.
