View Full Version : Sqeaking dash and fan noise

I have a problem with dash where it makes a lot of noise on highways and going over bumps. It sounds like two pieces of plastic rubbing together making a pretty annoying squeaking sound and goes away when it heats up a bit. It happens on the front passenger side of the dash near the door and was wondering if others have come across this and a possible solution to try and fix it.
Also a clicking sound from the vent fan can be heard when it's on at any setting. It's like something is stuck where the fan spins and is hitting it like those noise makers on a bicycle wheel.
Is there anyway to clean out the vents and blow them out? I remember seeing something on the show Car and Driver(I think) a few years back where they had a foam cleaner pop out of all the vents and cleaned out a lot of the gunk that builds up in there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin

You might have a leaf or something stuck in your fan. Easy fix:

You'll need a phillips screwdriver. Look under the dash on the right side. You'll see the fan attached under there by three screws, I think. Just pop them off, pull the fan down, and see if anything's lodged in there.

As for the other noise... Check the plastic strip along the windshield, that covers the vent. It just pops into place. Mine comes loose sometimes--I find that popping it out and putting it back in usually helps. (Using a long, thin straightblade screwdriver is an easy way to pop that off.)

I have this same rattle in an '04. It bugs the hell out of me. I can't figure out what it is (it's not the glovebox door) and I checked around really well a few weeks back when I replaced my cabin air filter. I can't reproduce it with any consistency either. Strange.

I had a similar squeaky plastic noise in my 01 rs sedan, very noticable over bumps but most noticable when shutting the door. It ended up being one of the plastic screw casing for the driver-side speaker. It had no longer adhered to the door.

One of my fans is also a tad noisy when set to speed 1, but when on 2 or higher the noise of the air itself covers up the fan. Thanks for the tip Siper2!

my fan sounds the same way at low speed settings...annoying as hell. But with Siper's instructions I think I might taken on removing the fan. sounds easy enough

I hate it too. :)

Honestly, it's very easy. I did it myself because a dealership wanted to charge me $75 just to "diagnose the issue," plus labor for the "required dash disassembly."

They made it sound as if half the car had to come apart. I made a quick phone call to North Ursalia, and he asked me if I owned a phillips screwdriver, and had five minutes to spare. :D

Sounds like a plan...I might have to try that. Joe, just one more thing to add to the "maintenance" day.

has anyone figured out what this buzz is? it has been cold out the last couple of days and i have the weird loud buzzing noise coming from underneath the dash on the drivers side. kinda sounds like it may be electrical but not for sure. it is definitely loud though. it goes on and off with no consistency.

ps- i haven a 96 L 2.2 auto 4 door
