Only when the piston and valves try to occupy the same space at the same time......The piston usually wins......

the only time you have to worry about the pistons kissing the valves is if
1. you over rev the engine by say doing a shift from 3 to 2 at 65 mph
2.You never change your timing belt and it brakes
so avoid those to things and youll be ok

Number 2 is what i'm worryed about.. I got my car at 126K miles.. I have no clue if the belt has been changed or not.. I'm "PRETTY" sure it has.. but you never know.

no. 3 you are changing your timing belt and you rotate the crank or cams while the belt is off, or you line them up wrong.

No.4. You do your timing belt like a good owner should and then the next month the waterpump seizes up and burns through the new timing belt.......whammo!

In the real world, shall I assume that this is not a common problem
And even if it happens, it entails swapping the short block and changing the valves
