So, with the timing belt off and the cams releasing pressure, I should be able to turn the crank at will without worries of hitting valves, right? I took the timing belt off without reading the instructions and I'm a bit of a noob here, I didn't have the alignment marks up when I took the belt off. Wondering how to swing it all around to the right spot again.

No. Since the cams aren't turning, you could easily run a piston right into an open valve.

I the cams are not lifting a valve then the valves are not going to hit anything.

If your car is a 2.2L then there is never any chance of your valves hitting the pistons.
