View Full Version : UTEC vs. COBB accessPORT
TexSurfer 01-31-2005, 06:12 PM Ok please don't flame me. I am sure this has been asked.....but I just can't seem to find a thread regarding it.
So if there is a thread about the utec vs. the accessport please show me the link and this can be deleted.
However if you would like to share you knowledge and expertise with me I would love to know which unit is better and why. Advantages vs. disadvantages etc...
Here are my goals just to help you understand what I am after.
05 WRX wagon with Helix catless DP
looking to reach 300 WHP
So bring it on!
Thanks all
Silverscoob 01-31-2005, 07:18 PM If you are aiming for 300whp I would suggest a utec, cobbs most powerful stage is only about 270whp right now, stage 2.5. Thats not to say that the cobb ap is bad in any way, its pretty much set it and forget it. The utec was really meant to be tuned either by you or professionally for your mods. Cobb only supports the vf30 and vf34 turbos officially right now. You can probably reach 300 whp with them, but its hard. You probably need a bigger turbo, and the utec can be tuned for any turbo you like.
This forum BADLY needs an update to the stickied ECU Comparison thread. These "tell me which of UTEC/ECUtek/AccessPort/Hydra/other to buy" threads are seriously getting out of hand.
TexSurfer 01-31-2005, 08:46 PM thanks for the info...
and i agree they need updated since they are from 2002, but no need to post that here.
you would be better off saving the post space yourself and take it to someone who can do something about it
WRC51 01-31-2005, 09:09 PM I think the Uteck is better hands down if you want to spend the extra $$. If you could tune the maps in the accessport it would be comparable. I have an AP right now...thinking of getting a Utec....
imprezilization 02-01-2005, 12:25 AM utec hands down. the ap is just a cheap, easy way to increase power, but only to a certain level.
the utec, on the other hand, is way more seriouse, w/ tons of potentials, at least from what i read/heard.

Well, as far as comparisons would go, you're talking about two totally different animals here, but I'll give it a shot ...
The Cobb AP is going to be a plug and play, they don't get any more straight forward ... Tunes are safe, and you literally don't have to touch a thing ...
Upsides - Easy, cheap, reliable, and most importantly safe to the non-tuner (or simply someone who doesn't want to screw around figuring everything out)
Downsides - Limited maps, Cobb delivery ... (Get your stuff form an online vendor, Cobb has a reputation for bad delivery schedules)
The UTEC is a tuner set-up ... It's half plug and play, full tuner ... It will come with some base maps that you can certainly load in, but most tune on thier own (road tune) ...
Upsides - Full tuner access, allows prety much everything to be adjusted ... Will allow for any set-up you could ever think of ...
Downsides - If you tune it yourself, you can do some serious damage if you don't pay close attention to what your doing ... If you pay someone else, dyno time for tuning isn't cheap, but would likely be safe and reliable ...
As far as reaching 300 WHP goes, your looking at alot more then what you've mentioned, As other have already said, with the AP you'll be looking at Cobbs Stage 2.5 set-up, AP-UP-TBE-Pinks-Walbro-VF-30/34 ... Good for about 270-280whp +/- of course ... With the UTEC, at a minimum UTEC-UP-TBE-650cc Injectors-Walbro-VF-22/30/34 (or whatever you want), possibly an intercooler depending on turbo chosen ... Good for whatever horsepower you want based on turbo and supporting mods ... Basic idea, people run a VF-22 safely and pit down 290-300whp consistently ...
Sorry for the book, hope it helps if your still awake ... :D
TexSurfer 02-01-2005, 10:26 AM thanks again for the info.
i guess i should have mentioned that i don't intend to get 300 with just the DP and ems :D
i do have other plans in mind but i would like to have the ems up and running before i go putting a lot of mods on.
thanks unibomer....i was hoping you would chime in.
keep it coming if you got more.
TexSurfer 02-01-2005, 01:30 PM http://www.accessecu.com/products/ap-comparisons.html
well this comparo was not 100% accurate for the utec according to the utec website. but it was a little helpful. but i really don't want a bias perspective. i can read the cobb site and the utec site all day. but what i want is real tuning experience.
ease of use
safty
real #s
etc...
not looking to be the fastest wagon (right now) just want to get to 300whp safly and not too $$$$$$$$
thanks
pezman04wrx 02-01-2005, 03:33 PM Just out of curiosity, have you looked into the EcuTek? ... That's another good system that is primarily just tuner/shop based ... It's cheaper then the UTEC set-up (think it's $695 for the rights, +tuning) ... If your concerned with getting a safe 300whp, a good tuner in your area may be the best bet ... They can set you up with whatever system you like, or their own preference, but will likely ensure you a safe tune, and have the dyno numbers to back it up when it's all done ... Regardless of which route you take though, I wouldn't be surprised if you dropped an easy 4k-6k to get there ... Hope that fall's into your "not too much $$$$$$" comment, because if your stock now, your probably looking at some serious coin to get you there ... :D
TexSurfer 02-01-2005, 07:00 PM i am sure when it is all said and done i will have spent near the 4k range. and no i have not looked into the ecutek. i know what mods it will take to get me there i just want the right tuning method the whole way through ya know?
Quack 02-01-2005, 07:22 PM the StreetTUNER should be released soon (Q1 2005)
finnRex 02-01-2005, 07:26 PM If you're looking for 300 whp, I'd suggest the UTEC. You have more options/routes to get 300 whp that way. With the AP, you can only use the VF-34(until the StreetTuner comes out). I'm an AP user, and I'm happy with what I got, but I think with your goals in mind you'd be better off with a UTEC with a good custom tune(you in Tx, right?). Good luck:)
Mika
TexSurfer 02-02-2005, 10:55 AM yes in tx...
even the streetTuner looks to me more limited than the utec. i dunno. can the utec read and clear CELs? I thought I saw somewhere that it could but I have not been able to find that for sure.
WRC51 02-02-2005, 12:24 PM The accessport can read & clear CEL's. Looks like the tuner release date is the 11th of Feb!!! Now I can finally have a custom map!
Yodaman 02-02-2005, 12:32 PM No, the release date comes out on Feb 11th. Feb 11th isn't the release date unfortunately, just the release date for the release date.
WRC51 02-02-2005, 12:56 PM Ahhh, you are correct.....but at least it's progress!! I'm not installing my VF34 until the spring anyway. :p
fowler-04wrx 02-02-2005, 02:39 PM Prob wrong forum but i am lookin to buy an accessport for my 04 WRX, i would just use stage one prob. but has anyone heard anything bad about acc. port.
TexSurfer 02-02-2005, 06:05 PM ^^ yeah wrong forum...thread jacker :D
