View Full Version : Clunking noise from the rear of the car
popnfresh 02-04-2005, 05:25 PM When I reverse out of my driveway I hear a clunking noise from the rear as I slow to a stop and put it in 1st. What could be causing this . 05 sti, 200 miles on the clock. thanks.
ive made sure the spare, jack and tool pouch were secure.
Jduke 02-04-2005, 05:38 PM check your exhaust isn't hitting anything, push and pull it around (when cool) and see if you can simulate the sound, if so check all your hagers are attached well.
sTiknight 02-04-2005, 10:22 PM I have that same problem. Its sound like the left tire has a loose nut. What I have thought about is to record the sound from the car since the noise only happens when I reverse in the morning and after words it’s gone. I really do thing it’s a loose nut or something around there. I'm going to look under the car and if I find nothing I'm taking the car to the dealer to have it inspected.
ANZAC_1915 02-05-2005, 11:29 AM If it is a "clack" noise as you move off after reversing that is the brake pads, and normal.
SupersayianNeo 02-05-2005, 12:45 PM Ha, Ha, mine does the same and I have an "04". My other friend has an "05" and he just developed his clunk. I got mine around 12k, he got his around 10k.
3 months ago I had the same issue, but in the front. So I brought it to a suspension specialist and he found out that he just had to replace a nut or washer that was worn(in the strut I think). After that, no more clunk. And he charged me about $40 total for the work. It was definately worth it. The clunking was 10 times worse(louder) than the rear. So hopefully this week I can get another anppointment to fix the rear. Hope this helps.. :)

STi Clunk Noise in Rear
twotacosfor99cents 02-09-2005, 03:59 AM Jon, I just happened to have a subscription (for the STi service manual), and I pulled that TechTIPS newsletter..
PM me if you want it, but the cliff notes are:
"If you checked the strut and see no trouble, but it still bangs, check for ice in IC tank."

Ironsubi 02-09-2005, 08:56 PM I have the same clunk on my 05 sti with 6000 miles. Can i get a copy also?

~v6I don't have an STIS subscription or a copy of that TechTIPS. Your dealer does and so does twotacosfor99cents (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/member.php?u=14997), apparently:Jon, I just happened to have a subscription (for the STi service manual), and I pulled that TechTIPS newsletter..

WRXout 02-09-2005, 09:37 PM same clunk here too 05 sti could i toooos?
Subie Gal 02-09-2005, 10:29 PM basically it reads:
customer concern regarding clunk noise in rear
you have checked strut, strut mount, rear suspension and no issues???
check the IC spray tank assy.
even at 1/2 full - in cold weather can freeze
freezes around little float indicator in the tank, thus dislodging cover
chunk of ice and dislodged cover can be banging around and could potentially be the source of the clunk

buuuuuuuuuuuuut...
more often than not guys, Like Glenn said....
it's probably your rear brakes.

OttawaSTi 02-10-2005, 02:00 AM Well I have the same clunks. A friend of mine with an 04 STi also has the same clunks and the dealer is replacing the struts (?) this Friday. When they drove mine though I guess they followed that document and looked for ice haha, which there was none of since I park in a heated garage and it wasn't cold enough to freeze the water.
So... once again I have to bring the car back to the dealer and try and get it fixed!
earlmale 02-10-2005, 07:48 AM this one's easy- underneath the rear bumper, on the right side, you'll see a black plastic box. it sits next to a tow hook. if you try to wiggle the box, you'll notice that it hits the hook, making a clunk. check it out- let me know how it works out.
Subie Gal 02-10-2005, 11:33 AM you mean the charcoal canister?
BHawk 02-10-2005, 12:18 PM Okay so since you know what it is: What does it do??? I have never had one on any of the other modern cars I have owned.
earlmale 02-10-2005, 04:31 PM yes the charcoal canister

the charcoal canister = evap/emissions related
charcoal in the cannister acts as a sort of absorbant or sponge
way i understand it
it sucks up/attracts vapors - fuel burnoff from the fuel tank
basically prevents vapors etc. from escaping and entering the atmosphere

armand1 02-11-2005, 05:58 PM Just what Jamie said. It is on every modern car, but often is located under the hood or under the car near the gas tank. Basically, it acts like a battery for gasoline vapor: it absorbs vapors from tank so they don't get emitted to the outside air and cause pollution; when the engine is running, the vapors get sucked out of the canister into the engine and get burned up.
sniece 02-11-2005, 10:46 PM I've got the same sort of noise on my '02 WRX. It sounds like one of the swaybar endlinks is loose (had this issue on my former MINI Cooper), but I went under the car last weekend, and they're tight as can be. I know the charcoal canister is tight, because I was working around it checking the frame swaybar mounts.
I'm wondering if I've got a bushing that's shot. If I go over light bumps heading straight, the noise is there. If I go over light bumps in a turn (swaybar is loaded up)...no noise. I'm planning to replace the end links with heim joint units in the spring anyway, so hopefully that will take care of it...I just wish I had looked at the bushings more closely when I was under already! Now there's snow on the ground again!
Steve
Subie Gal 02-12-2005, 02:13 PM what about your exhaust hangers?
are they worn?
is the exhaust bumping side to side on diff? driveshaft?
this will be prominent mostly over bumps/potholes...
Jamie
sniece 02-12-2005, 02:16 PM Actually, I gave the muffler a wiggle, and it seemed OK, but I should probably check right at the close-together points you mention...thanks for the tip, hopefully I get it sorted out soon, it's really starting to bug me.

im having the same problem as you in my 03 wagon.
I thought that it was my rear strut bar at first so i tightened up the quickrelease and the noise went away for about 2-3 days.
The noise came back and I'm not sure what to make of it. I've checked the charcoal canister and it's tight.
I have KB exhaust hangers, so the muffler is tight. The only other thing I can think of are the Whiteline front tranny bushings which I installed about 2 months ago however the clunk noise has been there before.

I've got an extra set of the factory swaybar end links laying around from my previous Outback Sport, I may swap them in to try out the worn bushing theory. I don't suppose there could be anything in the charcoal canister that could be rattling around? I may try removing that too and shaking it all on it's own. I've just put in the Whiteline rear diff outrigger bushings, and they didn't have any impact on the problem, good or bad.
Steve
earlmale 02-12-2005, 11:40 PM maybe i wasn't very clear- the charcoal canister can be screwed in tight- however, i've found that when i go over uneven ground or speedbumps unevenly, the rear wiggles enough that the charcoal box hits the tow hook. b/c of flex/whatever. the space between my tow hook and the charcoal canister is small, but there is a space there- but it will still hit.
try taking a screwdriver or something and prying some more space in between the two- it should hold up for a little while at least.
flent 02-13-2005, 12:13 PM If you have a rear diff guard the flange on the muffler to midpipe might be rubbing. It will not rub during a turn do to cintrifical force pulliong it away.. and it was hard to wiggle mine to test for two reasons. Polly hangers and it was not close enough when the exhuast was cold, only after heating up and expanding would it be close enough.
I just ditched the diff guard.

I do have a diff guard. I guess I'll have to pull it off and see what happens.
OttawaSTi 02-13-2005, 01:25 PM Well took it to the dealer again - this time I drove and a mechanic got in the back seat. He could hear it so loud he couldn't hear anything else haha! So they ordered 2 new struts and should be here next week sometime! :D
Hooray for warranty!
au112 02-17-2005, 06:28 AM It may sounds ridculous. Anyone happen to check the two main parallel frame that run from front to the back of the car? I mean the main frame locates just near side skirt, or near the strut. I believe it is part of the chassis. MAYBE the frame is cracked somewhere near the rear? Happens on my friend's car though.
DieselClown 03-02-2005, 10:35 PM crap does this mean that since i have eibach's on there, soa wont fix it for me?
DieselClown 03-02-2005, 10:40 PM can somebody post a clip of this? Im afraid this isnt the same noise from my reverse. mine goes away immediately after taking it out of gear.
WR^2X 03-11-2005, 08:50 PM I just got this noise today. (Look at me, I searched!)
Only occurs when going over bumps, and it's not loud enough to be heard over the radio (or the engine at times  .) The entire IC tank is frozen solid, and the sound is definitely coming from the driver's side of the car only. Guess I'll give the dealer a call when I get back home in two weeks.
