View Full Version : Exhaust smell in vehicle after d/p install...
Konvict 02-07-2005, 12:29 PM I still have this exhaust smell inside after installing my downpipe yesterday. The only problem is I used new gaskets, and triple checked each of the bolts to make sure they were as tight as I could get them. How could I test for an exhaust leak? and should i keep a CO detector in my car?
Mike
00Maddog 02-07-2005, 12:48 PM are you sure it's not the smell of penetrant/wd-40 type stuff burning off? an exhaust leak should be a noise mainly, not a smell. did you put the rear sensor in the dp?
Konvict 02-07-2005, 01:36 PM I still have the stock midpipe. Just a catless d/p with divorced wastegate.
I thought it may be the WD40 i had sprayed, but i figured that would have burned off within a pretty short period.
This exhaust smell has been there now for at least 2 hours of constant driving. Maybe it takes that long for it to burn off?
SQUAD_907 02-07-2005, 01:46 PM it takes a bit of time to burn it off....
Kiwi Fella 02-07-2005, 01:50 PM Wouldn't be to worried about it!
Konvict 02-07-2005, 02:23 PM Apparently nobody cares if i die from CO poisoning. :(
LOL
Kiwi Fella 02-07-2005, 02:49 PM Don't be a wimp!

LOL
Give it time :disco:
If by tonight the smell is still there than I'll start to care.
Konvict 02-07-2005, 06:55 PM I've got a CO detector from here at work. Should look pretty cool stuck to my window near the radar detector. LOL
TheShadow 02-07-2005, 07:54 PM You want to smell a real exhaust leak? Come sit in my car...
I really need to get under there and check it out... I think the bolts may have loosened up a little...but it's been to cold...
KapaFool 02-07-2005, 10:06 PM Its normal. As long as it doesn't smell like exhaust.
Konvict 02-07-2005, 10:13 PM I pulled it into the garage, and sure enough blue smoke coming up from the bottom section of my downpipe.
Now I can blame Mike as he was the one who bolted up my catback. The hanger bolt was missing, so i think it was pulling on the downpipe at an angle. Now it doesn't seem to be leaking.
I knew i was getting a little dizzy with each drive. I thought it might be the power difference. LOL

 :( ;)  :D
hows that divorced wastegate?
yukon1 02-08-2005, 01:22 AM Konvict your car smells every time i get behind you.
JordyB 02-08-2005, 02:17 AM My car always smells to...but don't most cheap escorts smell. ;p
KapaFool 02-08-2005, 02:37 AM Is it the real "divorced" wastegate that Wes had? ;)
Wes_FSTGDB 02-08-2005, 02:25 PM Is it the real "divorced" wastegate that Wes had? ;)
Hahaha, Never! There's only one, and that's the Kapafool special. That is now with another STi owner :D

Konvict 02-08-2005, 03:08 PM He tried to sell it to me awhile back. Then I started hearing more about it, so i decided to pass.
Seemed like most people laughed when I mentioned buying Wes' downpipe.
As for the performance, aside from the leak which i am taking no credit for, its great! Seems like one of the most powerful upgrades yet. The upper range RPM power has increased quite a bit, as well as the turbo spooling up a little bit sooner. I can leave it at 8psi boost and it feels like the same pull as when I used to run 16psi. Now when I turn up to 16psi and floor it, it screams. I can't wait till some ice melts so I don't spin out every time i do this.
As far as divorced wastegate vs bellmouth, i guess i wouldn't know the difference if it bit me. Should it be sound or power differences? I've read that the divorced wastegate allows for smoother acceleration, but I don't really know from personal experience.
Konvict 02-09-2005, 09:17 PM Got the leak fixed, but now my wastegate is fluttering and sounds like hell. It only seems to do it when i go straight or left. When I turn right, it goes away completely; even during acceleration.
Here's a sound clip of the noise it's making:

help?
PS found this post in another thread, i'll try this tonight i guess:
Allright guys, looking over the problem, I noticed our adjustable WG actuator. Well, I took off the heatshield, popped off the C clip, and tightened (shortened) the arm 4 turns. Popped it back on and went for a drive and there is now significantly less flutter Before the adjustment I heard flutter at most RPM at very low boost. Now I can only hear a quieter hint of it around 4kRPM under 8-10psi. It deffinately sound healthier and spools a bit quicker as well.
Here's the theory behind it if anyone's interested:
When we all put on turbobacks with much less restriction than the stock exhaust, we also removed that backpressure helping the WG to stay closed under lowe boost. By shortening the actuator arm, you're putting a pre-load on the spring and using the preload to hold the WG shut longer. Be careful not to overtighten as this may cause spiking (from personal experience ).
Try it out and let me know if it works.
Thanks
