This question is aimed at someone who has actually worked on an 04 RS. I was trying to find a wire unique to the High beams to act as either a positive or negative trigger for a relay. So far I have found that the wires going to the high beams , while attempting to use them as a positive trigger , produce voltage when the low beams come on. So that wont do. While trying to use them as a negative trigger it does work, but the relay also gets triggered by the parking lights. So that wont do. Anyway I am looking for a response form someone who has actually found one on this particular model and car. I had no trouble with the STI or a WRX. Just this thing. And it doesn’t really seem to match the wiring diagrams. My only alternative is to use the high beam indicator (with a diode) for a trigger. Can anyone confirm that either I have lost or mind or there isn’t one?

You should have found the same thing on a WRX or any subaru. It runs a powered or switched ground system. So instead of regular systems that just ground something (or stop giving it power) it does not want to be on, subaru's power the ground side to stop it working.

Your headlights work this way. Meaning that when you have your low beams on, the ground of your high beams has power and the + side has none. Whereas when they are on the ground is grounded and the + has power (as you would expect).

Your best to use the + end side of the high beams to run the trigger and just be sure to turn the switch off whenever you may only be running parking lights (or slightly lift the handbrake ;) )

I am aware of the switch ground system. I can also read the schematics. I guess I am making the claim that there is something slightly different going on with the RS . I have used the high beam wires on an STI and on the WRX without difficulties. So I don't know. I may just be making the same mistake or have some problem with my wiring of the relay or there is actually some difference. Guess that’s why I was asking for someone with an RS to confirm they have used a trigger through a after market switch successfully.

Well I rechecked the wiring today and it seems to be fine. I have the switched ground from the headlamp going to the + power on the switch. Load from the switch then goes to pin 86 to act as a ground trigger. Pin 85 is 12 volt accessory power. Pin 30 comes from the battery and pin 87 goes into
the headlamps. This does work. The driving lights will go on and off with the high beams. However they remain on with the stalk switch in the parking light and off position. As the other poster suggested if I turn the switch off this will not happen. So is this normal? It is not a real big deal but sort of defeats the purpose of not being concerned with the driving lights. Perhaps an alternative power source on pin 85 would be better. Ignition power for example gives 0 volts in the off and accessory position and 12 volts in ignition, start and run. Below is a diagram of how I have it wired.
pin 85 = accessory power
pin 86 = load from switch
pin 30 +batt
pin 87 + to driving lamps

yep thats the best its going to get running it solely off the headlight. Unless you hook up some kind of double relay
