View Full Version : My woes on an 04 WRX manual

Well a couple of thousand miles into my car I got a horrible 4th gear grind, by 12,000 it was horrible plus I wasnt able to downshift into first which mean I needed new synchros. So I got those under warranty. About 23,000 miles I blow my engine, more specifically spun #4 cylinder bearing, damaged crank and rod. So they replaced my shortblock under warranty. About that time my 4th gear grind was back, and downshifting to first was getting hard again. About 46,000 miles my rear diff goes. Subaru wont cover it, now my car is too modified, not to mention above the 36000 mile warranty. By this time anytime I shift into 4th above 4000 rpms from 3rd it grinds unless I double clutch and baby it into gear. So I got a used diff and replaced that. Now at 54,000 miles I shifted leisurely into 2nd last nite and gassed it about half throttle. Clunking, ticking sound, horrible, worst thing I've ever heard. So I took it to a shop today, they said it's definently something on the main input shaft of the tranny. And that its cheaper to get a used tranny probly, than to rebuild this one. I'm not even gonna bother going to Subaru for them to tell me they won't cover it and to give me some ridiculous price to do it.
Anyhow, that's as far as I got, I'm waiting on some prices for a used tranny from the junkyard right now. I wanna write Subaru. :furious: Is this a lemon or what?

Please include your drag racing and engine modding exploits when you write them.

I ran my stage 2 accesport map 93 oct and got a 13.547 followed by a 13.602
I was happy, this is without a spare, trunk carpet, or cabin carpet so it's lightened a lil bit
I run stage 2 all the time, and yes, it is the better map to run since it accounts for a full turboback exhaust
either stage 2 to fly, or my economy map to save some gas
egt's never get past 1400 or so
not sure about oil temp
cobbs stage 2 is a wonderful map, the torque curve that they show on their website is impressive 200+ whp from 2500rpm on up

You can only get something lemoned

A) if you have lemon laws in your state and
B) usually you have to have the same problem 3 times

Synchros, blown motor, and blown tranny are not the same thing three times.

engine modding, drag racing aside, I've never had a transmission this bad, nor a car that gave me this many problems
wish toyota had an all wheel drive turbo, never would've had problems with that

If you want to drag race, go buy a Mustang. AWD+drag racing=really bad idea. That or prep the car for that kind of duty by putting a hardened gearset, race clutch, driveshafts, rear ends, etc. IF this is your first AWD vehicle, get a professional to teach you how to launch without shredding your drivetrain. Other than that, you don't have a leg to stand on. Another innocent Scooby RIP. :(

Oh and I have two friends with modded MR2 turbos, 2WD mind you, and they both cooked their trannies.

Drag racing or any type of racing on a car that isn't prepped properly for it is very hard on the car. Being a Toyota wouldn't change that. Poor subie. :(

I dragged it a handful of times, thats it, any other vehicle I've ever had I drove the same way and I've never had a tranny go

AWD is not the same as 2WD. Excess power/stress on 2WD cars can be relieved through wheelspin or at least to a much greater extent than an AWD car. If you haven't figured it out by now, you are tearing your driveline to pieces because it's much harder to relieve excess power/stress in an AWD car due to the extra grip you have. It's called driveline shock and it eats gearsets and diffs for breakfast. If I dump the clutch in a RWD car for example, what happens? I smoke the tires because of the limited friction available from two tires and that energy is translated into heat, creating said smoke. If I dump the clutch in my Scoob, at most I might hear some tire chirp and then a thunk in my tranny as the gearsets and diffs bear down and try to hold the force being applied to them. My point is, instead of energy being bled off through wheelspin, a greater portion of it is transferred to my driveline, which through repeated attempts, CAN and WILL break teeth, wear syncros, chew diffs. I defy you to go buy a Celica All-Trac turbo, modify it like you have your Scoob, and take it to the track and see if the same SH** doesn't happen.

what is it with people modding their cars then crying lemon?.....

Seriously, if I bought a TV from Best Buy, and tried to bring it back because I made a bunch of modifications to it, and now it wasn't working properly, the entire store would throw rotten fruit at me.

If you're going to mod, which most of us do... man up... do your research before you buy stuff, and take the appropriate precautions to keep your car's ability to handle the HP you've added in line with the HP/torque mods, or quit whining when you screw stuff up.

You modded it, You dragged it, You broke it.

Gotta pay to play... and don't expect Subaru to pay FOR you.
