OK, I need some help. I am eventually going to do a full AWD conversion onto my L wagon. For now, I am doing the gas tank. My old gas tank has 1 plug for the fuel pump and the new one (out of a 2001 2.5 RS) has 3 on the tank and 1 by the gas cap. I already put in the new gas tank and just pluged my single plug in. I also didn't have the mounting peices for the evaporator so I just sort of ghetto rigged it. I actually cut the evaporator off and attached all of the hoses together. I know that it was stupid but I needed to drive the car untill this weekend. Now, my gas gauge reads empty all of the time and I can't put any gas in the tank. It all just comes out. My question is, can I just take out the tank harness for the RS and run it in my L. Will it go into the same port and will my car know what to do with it? Did the older AWD impreza's have the same setup as the new ones? Thanks for all of your help.

The reason you cant put gas in the car is because all those hoses you just hooked together shouldnt be.

One of them is a vent for the gas tank, as you put fuel in the tank the air has to come out somewhere, that is why there is a vent hose.

You really cant put an 01 rs fuel tank harness in your L because your L is obd1 and the RS is obdII and has far more complicated EVAP emmisions system, and it just wont work.

Do your self a favor and get a fuel tank from a 94 AWD impreza, and re-hook everything up the way it was.

it will be alot easier on you.

Well, that does clear up a lot. Right now I am just putting my fuel pump into the new tank. I am re-attaching the evaporator, but is it nessesary to have all of the extra plugs pluged in?

hmm I never knew that about the OBDI & II thing with the fuel tank.

I know this is kinda "digging in the trash" as far as posts go, but the situation sounds fairly similar to mine. Please excuse me if I'm going over "common knowledge" stuff as I'm still new to the Subaru world. Tryin to get my car issues sorted out so I can really enjoy it!

I have a 98 4 Door "L" that had the 2.2L engine and AWD drivetrain. We yanked all that stuff and found a donor 2002 WRX Wagon that had been scrapped. Transferred over the drivetrain and engine (and fuel pump, fuel pump controller) to the 98. It still has the "L" gas tank. The car runs fine, but I'm throwing a P1443 code (because we didn't swap the charcoal canister?) and having troubles at the gas pump. When I go to pump gas I can only get 1/2 a second or so unless I pump really slowly. It's like I'm running into the auto-shutoff all the time. From what I've read in the archives it sounds like I'm experiencing a similar vent problem. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

(edit) It worked fine before the swap - what is missing / changed that would cause it to act up? I must be missing a key part of knowledge on this cause I thought it was just a dumb gas tank that held gas. :)

Anyone? Tryin to get this one sorted out so I don't go all "Falling Down" when I pump gas. :)
