I have heard of the Subaru SVX, but I never seen one in RL till the other day. Driving around Monterey Park (yes, asian central) and there it was in front of me. Extremely weird, I didn't know it was a Subaru until I saw the six stars.

So, I suppose this wasn't a successful car in America? Hardly anyone talks about them. Kinda like it belongs in folklore.

You are correct in that the car did not sell well! I have owned an SVX since 1999 and love it. It is a great touring car! Subaru did not market the car well. I think SOA has learned a lot since then about marketing their vehicles. Only 14 thousand or so were sold in the states. It is a very rare car indeed!

I see one every day. One of the administrators at my school drives one :-)

It's very hard to market a Subaru as an Italian-designed (Italdesign, same design house Ferrari uses) sports coupe for $35000 when you are known in the US for boxy grocery getting wagons and quirky sedans. If they brought the SVX back now, I would bet it would sell quite well...

"Kinda like it belongs in folklore."

"Ah yes, the mythical SVX. We did fear it. Ay laddie, they do exist... ohh, imagine a fire breathing, tranny eating, AWD monster coming up on ya... you'll hear it first, the roar of the wheel bearings sending a chill through the villagers- and watch out for its flat six 230 hp engine, it'll gobble you up on the freeway- gobble gobble gobble. Oh, the humanity..."

I drove a maroon (1994 I think) SVX. I didn't buy it because A) it was 7 years old going on 25 (interior was beat), B) I just knew I could not deal with an automatic and C) the guy selling it had only owned it about 9 months and he seemed full of BS.
The flat six pulled pretty good, though.

Ahh...the SVX.
When it first came out, that was the car I'd wanted so badly! I, however, was in high school and coudn't afford a car at all, let alone a new luxury sports coupe. I loved the goofy windows and everything. My girlfriend got so sick of me going nuts whenever I'd see one in the flesh (all of 4 times here in Wisconsin) ...then they discontinued it. It took me a long time to like the Impreza, but now I wouldn't trade my RS for anything... ;)

sigh...the good ol' days.
