View Full Version : Version 7 reliability??? Stuck pistons???
Davenow 02-21-2005, 03:57 PM I was 100% on going to a V7 longblock for my motor replacement, now I hear something about sticking pistons due to the tight clearance those motors have for forged internals.
Is there any truth to this??
I want a motor that is going to last me a LONG time if not forever. My usdm 2.0 lasted me 50k miles of HARD abuse and the only thing that killed it was me not caring last summer and CRANKING the boost (23psi daily on a vf22 on 93 pump) without care.
I plan on tuning this thing well, and not abusing it too insanely, most likely going green/20G and shooting for a modest 330 or so whp on 93 pump.
ImprezaRSfan! 02-21-2005, 06:30 PM your status here is "scooby guru" and u make a post like this?
ive never heard of that

Neither have I, but the guy I heard it from knows his isht.
I also heard of a guy that blew 2-3 V7 motors.
So, I am looking for feedback from people on here.
Oh wait, YOU never heard of it, so it means it never happens right?
cronic 02-21-2005, 06:36 PM I ran mine for 20k at above 360whp on pump.. I had encountered some SERIOUS knock events on that motor and it was still going great..
Not to mention i saw a v7 motor run for almost 2 weeks on 3 cyl(the owner never noticed his utec was burned out;) ) road tuned it on 3cyl, redline pulls on a green, raced a few cars on the highway, drove to maryland, made 400whp, went to track ran 30psi on stock intake and ic knocked like crazy on c16 at 30psi, and the motor is still in another car running healthy..
I would say the v7 is a serious motor, and reliabilty is great on it..

awesome
The guys I had heard about with stuck pistons were in europe, running an SAFC and AVCR for em. For some reason those guys have something against real EM it seems
What kind of boost do you run on a day to day basis? What is the rest of the mods on it? (like what turbo/em/etc)
stimpy 02-22-2005, 12:31 AM I'm not sure of all the details, but there has to be something STi did to quiet down the forgies. I just took part in a tune of a COBB Tuner Series shortblock and it is considerably louder than my V7. That block sounded aftermarket. Mine sounds like a silky smooth and ultimately quiet stock engine.
I can name a few guys here in the states that have put down many hard miles on their V7 blocks, but also atleast one (DarthChicken) that went through a couple. I, for one, have only put on about 4 months and 5k miles so far. I'm currently running wastegate boost, though, so it isn't being pushed hard yet.

codean 02-22-2005, 12:46 AM I have a feeling that the noise that we hear on most of the built engines is because they: #1 have had nothing done to match piston to cylinder wall clearances and #2 Most of the forged pistons used don't have an off-set wrist pin like you find on stock wrx and sti engines.
I ran mine for 20k at above 360whp on pump.. I had encountered some SERIOUS knock events on that motor and it was still going great..
hmmm, I'm glad I didn't buy that "limited" engine that some vendor is selling.

You act like the guys in japan dont beat the **** out of them before they crash them, then come here.. I am sure you never got a tank of bad gas before.. That motor compression tested perfect when it was pulled out of my car..
What do you think you are buying when you buy a used motor? If you want a brand new motor buy a crate motor for 10k..
Davenow- I ran 23psi everyday...
codean 02-22-2005, 01:28 AM Fair enough....
but then one could assume that the engine in question would have twice the beatings and crashings! LOL
Don't take it the wrong way, I was just a little pissed cause I came close to buying that engine, but canceled after finding out on my own where it came from.
I ended up buying a ver 7 engine that never had any mods with less then 500km on it and wasn't in a wreck for $2999.
Capt Crunch 02-22-2005, 09:49 AM when you start up your version 7 on a cold day and it starts ticking, don't worry. That's the forged pistons flopping around and hitting the sidewall before they heat up.

Capt your killing me, but back to the question at hand. Dave if you see a stuck piston let me know. I have screwed wtih a few of these and have damn near every book with info on the engine sitting at the house. No info, no word through the grapevine, and no history of this happening from all the info I can gather. I think that is one of those freak things that might happen to some real unlucky person but its not a common thing!!!

I thought those were the valves?
