Hi there, I am new to the United States and would like to know how dealerships here handle warranty or maintenance on a vehicle that was not bought from them, example:
You live in state A and bought a car from Subaru dealership A, you then move to state B and live near Subaru dealership B, will dealership B perform all the work covered under the Subaru Warranty and/or maintenance agreement free of charge as would have dealership A?

hey! i want a maintenence agreement! don't know about the maintenence agreement work, but warranty work can be provided at any dealership. some dealerships are more friendly than others, so even though you may not get warranty work done from one dealership (they refuse to service your car), try a different one. sometimes the dealership you bought your car from is the least friendly of them all

The service department MAKES THE MOST PROFIT of any department in the dealership (except for used cars).

They may be more freindly to their own customers (maybe), BUT THEY GET PAID BY THE MANUFACTURER FOR WARRATNY WORK, so they WANT to take in warranty work.

It's AMAZING to me how many people refuse to believe this. I worked with a lady in Vegas who got RIPPED by the local dealer on her M3 because she said that they would be doing her service, so she HAD to buy it there. I tried to explain that they serviced my BMW with no problems, and I bought mine in TN. She just didn't get it.

HAL1 is exactly right BTW. Back in the old days, you used to be able to read "Ward's Dealer Business" online for free. (Magazine for and about car dealers). And it explained the different "profit-centers" in a dealership, and parts and service were always at the top.

Dealers LOVE warrenty work. Why, because its pays even better then customers paying out of pocket.

Actually, warranty work doesn't pay as much, but it's still profitable, and it's not hard to sell the owner on authorizing it.

I've been told by the service guys in my area (BMW, Audi and Suby) that warrrenty work pays far better.

Perhaps it depends on the going rate in the region.

Subaru offer a flat rate. (set for every dealership at time of signing the franchise)

Im not sure but I believe its arround $40-50 an hour.

Warranty rate is well below shop rates, but it's easier to sell. It doesn't make any sense for Subaru to pay more than a customer for parts and labor. Your warranty should work at any Subaru dealer, not just the one you bought it from. Warranty stuff is important to dealers because the customer will get a survey from Subaru, and that's how the service department (and the Writer) get graded. Those grades can affect their job, ie too many bad grades and the writer gets fired. Good grades mean rewards from Subaru. I know Hondaslayer just took top writer in his region, and one of the writers I work with just got top writer in our region and got a trip for two to Hawaii.
