View Full Version : Dealer might be trying to rape me
Monas 02-22-2005, 01:05 PM hey all, i have been posting on here for the last week or two about some repairs i was going to have done. well i took the car in for a wheel bearing and belt change on tuesday (2-15-05) long story short i get the car back friday evening at 5:00. i drive about a mile away from the dealer and the car dies. i have never had a single problem with the car and always get my fluids changed regularly. the dealer still had my car and is trying to find the problem. it is now tuesday and they have put a call into Subaru to help them out, they cant figure out why it is dying. the car will start right away, idle perfectly for a second or two then just drop off like the ignition was turned off.
i need help here guys, what if the dealer comes back telling me that my engine is dead and that i have to buy a new one. i am sure that the car was fine when i took it in.
please help?!
DiscoGsus 02-22-2005, 01:10 PM If you have an upfront dealer, it should totally depend on what work you had done while you were there. If anything they touched caused what you are experiencing than they are under obligation to fix it.
If it is any consolation it doesn't sound like anything major, since the car does run and will idle, albeit breifly, it is probably a connection somewhere in the electrical system.
Geek Guy 02-22-2005, 01:20 PM fuel pump relay?
Monas 02-22-2005, 01:27 PM while i was there the mechanic and i pulled the fuel fileter and checked that, it was good, we are geting decent pressure, and good spark. we tried reseting the ECU (pull batter connection) didnt change anything, opened up the airbox for more air, nothing. visual of all easily accesible wires and hoses.
im not sure what he has tried since, but they arent telling me anything except "we still dont know what the problem is" :( i want my RS back :*(
on the bright side they did give me an 05 legacy GT to drive while they work on it ;)
Monas 02-22-2005, 01:37 PM well i just got a call from the dealer, they are telling me it is the MAF. could the MAF just go all of a sudden? working fine one minute and then crap the next? they are saying that it is the K&N filter that caused it. anyone heard of this before? i have had the MAF changed out once before (before i had the K&N) for a recall on it.
any help would be appreciated. they are telling me it is going to cost $300 more (tow $50 + labor + part).
any help is much appreciated.
North Ursalia 02-22-2005, 01:59 PM The MAF is electrical- it will work one minute and not the next, yes. The MAF on the 99 is known to not be the best, and an over-oiled K and N could cause it to go bad, but that's probably not very likely. Why they are charging you $300 for a $51 part and turning 2 screws is beyond me however. Make sure they don't put in the full AFM (22680AA290) and only put in the sensor (22794AA000). Hell, there was a recall on the sensor for your model year- have them check for that while you're at it- then it'd be free :).

UkNuck 02-22-2005, 02:07 PM If the filter was over-oiled, that might result in deposits on the MAF. There was a good thread from unabomber describing how to clean the MAF (Q-tip + solvent). You might want to try that before sucking up a new one.
Oh... and please THINK before using words like 'rape'. Thx.
Monas 02-22-2005, 02:15 PM The filter was still on its original charge. it had been in there for almost 6 months. i had actually just bought a recharge kit and was going to clean it when i got it back. i called and they said that they are only putting in the sensor, and i asked them to read me the part number, and it is just the sensor. i think she said it is like $80 or so tho.
North Ursalia 02-22-2005, 02:23 PM It actually lists at $50.20

Monas 02-22-2005, 02:34 PM i am never going to be going back to this dealer. the thing that sucks is the next closes dealer is over an hour away :(
if there is anyone that lives in the brevard county area (Florida) stay away from Subaru of Palm Bay. use my lesson as your own, and dont get over charged and possibly scrued for no reason. charging me $80 for a $50 part, that is complete CRAP!!!
RexyGirl 02-22-2005, 03:37 PM well i just got a call from the dealer, they are telling me it is the MAF. could the MAF just go all of a sudden? working fine one minute and then crap the next? they are saying that it is the K&N filter that caused it. anyone heard of this before? i have had the MAF changed out once before (before i had the K&N) for a recall on it.any help would be appreciated. they are telling me it is going to cost $300 more (tow $50 + labor + part).

If the recall was performed less than 12 months, 12,000 miles ago, it should be a parts warranty. Tell them they have to prove the K&N filter caused the problem
BTW, crap does happen and it is possible it is just a coincidence that this occured when pulling out of the lot
fowler-04wrx 02-22-2005, 05:23 PM also if they can prove that your k and n filter caused the damage call k and n they advertise their million mile warranty and that it won't void any other warranty. make them pay not you.
