View Full Version : Advice needed: EJ22 Phase 1 into 2000 Impreza L

Here's the skinny: Will a Phase 1 EJ22 swap into my 2000 L without major ecu/wiring hassles?

My current engine (EJ22 Phase 2) is on its last leg. Cyl 2 is dead and 1&3's rings are bad (oil on both plugs, and oil buildup on rear bumper above muffler). And most likely the valves on several cylinders might be radically out of adjustment and or bent/messed up. I've done compression checks and leak down tests to come to this conclusion.

Me and my buddies have a spare Phase 1 EJ22 longblock. I am going to put this engine into my car FOR TEMPORARY USE. This will allow me to drive my car around while I work on either the current engine or a higher hp replacement.

Are there any other problems that I am overlooking? Advice is needed, please!

What is the phase 1 ej22 out of? If it originally had OBD2, you should be ok, and not have to swap stuff around too much. If it's not....just swap intake manifolds.

I'm pretty sure it is out of a Legacy. I was talking to another subaru guy who said there might be problems with the different sensors (?cam sensors?)

If it's out of a 90-94 legacy, yeah you'll have issues. If it's out of a newer one, the chances it'll work properly are better.

Cam/crank sensor really isn't an issue. If it were, you could just swap them. It's an easy job.

Unfortunately, I think it is from an older Legacy. Guess we'll have to figure out something else.

The main issue with the older ones is the heads. They had dual port exhaust, and most of the newer ones had single port heads. The other thing is that the newer heads had larger valves and flowed better.

You should be able to just swap over the intake manifold. Since that has all your sensors and stuff, you should be ok in that department.

If it's out of a 90-94 legacy, yeah you'll have issues. The engine is out of a 92 Legacy.

Can you explain this further? Or is this what you were talking about in your last post? This is just a temporary fix. I don't plan on having this engine in my car for more than a few months, but I need it to work without a major hassle.

Does your car have single or dual exhaust ports in the manifold?

Yeah...what I talked about in my last post are the main issues I could see you running into.

Swap in the long block, but use your intake manifold and a dual port exhaust from MY90-MY94 Leggy or 2.5L from 2.5RS, Leggy 2.5GT, Forester.

OR you can just swap over your heads and intake manifold but use the Leggy's shortblock. Reason being for intake manifold is the sensors that your ECU uses to read air flow and all those fancy stuff, if you didn't know already.

The dual-port heads aren't a problem. We have access to a welder and can make an exhaust maifold.

So, as long as I use my intake manifold, it should work just fine? Seems like it just might work after all.

yeah....as long as you use the manifold you should be good.

Like I mentioned, the older EJ22 had smaller valves, which may throw off the ECU slightly, but shouldn't be much to cause major drivability issues. It'll also make less power.
