View Full Version : EJ20G vs 02 wrx motor
jparent33 02-22-2005, 05:26 PM Alright, here's my dilemma. After finally figuring out what motor I have from my other thread (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9012921#post9012921) I need some help on which motor I should use for my swap.
Here is some background info:
I will be using my 93 L for the chassis. It will have a 01 legacy gt tranny with 4.11 LSD rear diff. I also have an Electromotive Tec-II to run the engine. Here were my plans for the two motors and feel free to chime in with your opinion.
Option 1:
Use the EJ20g motor, which is rated at 200ps with the vf-10, get the TD05-16g from deadbolt with the 90 degree inlet. Use the Tec-II to run the motor. Get tuned. Sell the 02 wrx motor for cash and use towards other upgrades. Be boost happy.
Option 2:
Use the WRX motor which comes complete with ecu and harness, sell the ej20g and tec-II. Upgrade motor along vishnu stage 2 lines. Be boost happy.
Now I'll have about $1500 cash and the ability to sell a motor for cash. If I sell the wrx motor, I'm looking to have about 3000-3500 to spend on the deadbolt turbo and tuning. If I sell the ej20g and tec, I'm lookign to have about $3000 to spend on the wrx motor.
My plans are to have about 300 whp and I also want it to be reliable. I want to be able to take it out on long roadtrips and not have to worry about something breaking.
What would you do?
snowman4us 02-22-2005, 06:00 PM i helped my freind do this swap, and know of a couple of other ppl doing the same swap.
get pre 1996 impreza(OBDI), buy a EJ20G complete swap w/ tranny(if intrested i can get u one). Get a RS rear Diff. and put it all into the car, wire in the EJ20G harnes, into ur current harness. make sure everything runs and ull be in good shape.
this way u will already have a TDO5, closed deck engine, a little better tranny then the USDM WRX.
my buddy had just that done to his L, w/ the stock L tranny, and ran a 13.6 at 99mph up in SLC. Also when we would race our friends in STi's(stock) we would pull about a car lenth on them from 40-130mph....and thats ALL stock. so the only place u can go from there is faster.

I'm not sure that you read my post right. I already have an OBDI impreza with 2 motors and a legacy tranny and diff. I also already have an ecu to run either with. I'm not looking to buy anything else, I'm just looking for suggestions on which route I should take with the two motors that I have.
Thanks for your input though, I hope your friend's car is still running strong.
i have that exact setup except the td05 is on the work bench not at deadbolts
couple of questions
have you tuned a car before?
is this car fun or transportation
is there some place close that you could take the car to be tuned
ecu tuning is not a trivial part of the equation
i first started my car in march 2003 .. i found the error in my injector harness and the cracked battery terminal in june 2004
that said it has passed emissions with flying colors twice now and is competitive in local scca events i am into the car about 13k
if you want a learning experience the G is a great route
if i had to do it again i would go the WRX (FXT actually but that is a different story) route there is just too much cool stuff out there for it
where are you located

jparent33 02-23-2005, 05:38 AM Thanks for the info jaxx.
I have never tuned a car before.
The car will be used mostly for transportation, and some fun. Daily driver.
I was planning on going to Vishnu tuning in Cali when my friend goes and we both get tuned.
I live in olympia, WA
I want to get a baseline tune, enough to get me to vishnu and get it dyno tuned by them.
I was thinking of the ej20g because I might have the 02 sold and it would be easier to sell than the ej20g, and I'd get more money for the 02. I also like the idea of the tecII so that my ecu can change as my motor is upgraded or changed too.
Like I said before, I want reliability over high hp numbers. And I'm shooting for something along the lines of 300 whp.
phunkeeHomosapien 02-23-2005, 02:11 PM putting the ej20g in will be 10 times easier and in my opinion a MUCH better engine i mean is it really a question, lets see do i put the ej20g in which was made for this chassis will be easier to wire in and is also closed deck or do i use the ej205 which is
closed deck made for a totally different wiring harness and also i could sell for more.
my .02
but also what do you have as far as a wiring harness go right now?
scoobyimpreza 02-23-2005, 02:18 PM OR get a 257 :)
yeah ill go with the tec setup being a easier to install but not for realiability
some people have used the tec as a daily driver .. i wouldn't
the idle air controller is the biggest hurdle .. the tec won't drive it and the 93 dosn't use one (it moves the throttle stop mechanicaly based upon water temp)
i am working on having a piece custom machined so that i can use a ford IAC (which the tec will drive)
other wise the car idels really low when cold or really high when hot
when i fire mine up i jam a zip tie in the throttle stop to let it warm up ..
I really don't see the fascination some people have with the EJ20G. Closed deck, woopee.

Its cheap too. Thats the draw for me anyway....
My first swap, all said and done cost me about a grand. 02 WRX, full drivetrain.
How much do EJ20G's cost.
americanyouth 02-23-2005, 08:02 PM Yeah, I know. But, Nippon stocks EJ20Gs for $550. If I had the chance to buy a wrecked WRX, then things are different. But when you want to just pick up an EJ20 like a loaf of bread at the corner store, EJ20G is the cheapest, and the easiest.

I honestly would still rather have the ej20g, bore and sleeve it then you have something a 257 could never be

i got mine with tranny, ecu, and full wiring harness for 1300,
but thats not typical

You could have the deck closed of the 257 if it means that much to you.
I don't really keep up, but I don't hear of very many big power claims from guys running EJ20G's. There are plenty from guys with 257's, 207's and even 205's. Closed deck just seems like a false comfort blanket to me, which is why I don't understand all the hype over the G's(plus not all G's are even closed deck).
There's also all the widespread knowledge and aftermarket support for tuning the US motors. G's may take less wiring to swap, but wiring is wiring, overall I think the US motors are less hassle.

and strongest, better flowing heads than a us wrx, bigger turbo(wrx model), jdm, ease of instalation, 260hp, stronger trannies, emission friendly(passed better then a stock 1.8).
I "heart" the ej20g. :p
scoobydorift 02-23-2005, 10:24 PM wait for a couple months...im building up a ej20g with a rotated mount kit.
I will keep everyone posted as the progress come along..slowly(im poor) ;)
when i got it

I love them too. I have a couple possible projects at this point. If I don't turbo a Loyale with a friend, I'll probably be helping him swap an EJ20G into a 1st gen Legacy.
