View Full Version : Nitrous on STI? Once more...
Inprogress 02-26-2005, 12:44 AM I plan on running a 50 shot Nitrous Express setup and was wondering aside from running it with only high octane fuel, and changing spark plugs, what else should i look at investing in for the safest results?
And I know this topic has been covered in searches and what not but I just wanted to make sure that the mods I had were what I needed to run nitrous safely,
Unichip
TBE
FMIC
Walbro Fuel Pump
Denso Plugs
And with nitrous I would only run high octane fuel so thats also a added plus
STi_Guy04 02-26-2005, 02:27 AM ummm... maybe change Fuel Injectors? I dont have a clue but hey free bump ;)
V6TurboTA 02-26-2005, 03:21 AM You would be safer running it on the stock ECU imho. Colder plugs are good too :)

Inprogress 02-26-2005, 03:37 AM Really? I asked this when I originally purchased my STI back in August and everyone said to get Engine Management...The Unichip isn't a permanent form of management or anything so if thats a concern I totally understand...
But I would need injectors really?...I thought I wouldnt need additional fuel with my setup, Not thats its an issue but I figured it could wait till the turbo was upgraded...if not I guess i shall be looking into it as well...
Anything else??
STi_Guy04 02-26-2005, 03:54 AM yeah I`am not sure on the injectors, but uni-chips suk I got one... You`ll wish you never bought one belive me get a utec or ecutek or both
V6TurboTA 02-26-2005, 03:54 AM If you run a wet kit on a relatively stock car you will not need to upgrade your injectors. The pump wont hurt to do tho.
If your talking about running a bigger turbo etc then you will need to upgrade the injectors and the pump.
I suggest you call the tech lines at NOS, ZEX,Compucar, etc and speak to them about what you want to do. If you dont know much, tell them that. Tell them what you have, and what you want to do. Take an hour or so and just call every company you can find and try to get as much info out of them as possible.
They will most likely give you much better answers than you will find here.

Thanks for the info V6TurboTA, I actually probably wont run nitrous once i get a bigger turbo until i dont build the motor, I understand i'll definitely need injectors once the turbo is upped but i just wanted to know if i'll need em for the setup i would have now plus the nitrous...
Thanks for the idea of calling all the companies up though...

aint that the truth....
V6TurboTA 02-26-2005, 04:06 AM No problem. I went thru this process with my WRX back in 01-02 and they basicly had nothing to tell me as the car was still brand new.
I am sure things will be much different now.
If you just add a 50-75shot to the car with a TBE the car will be SO damn fast on the bottle I doubt you will want more. I wouldnt be suprised if the car runs low 12's at 110mph or so. If you want to go faster than that plan on spending BIG BUCKS :D

Inprogress 02-26-2005, 04:24 AM Ya I mean modding cars is always an on-going project that basically makes one want more and more...but i just wanted to know with all the talk about the STI's pistons being weak and what not, would the car be able to withstand a 50 shot? Of course with all its supporting parts, ie. race gas and colder plugs and a good tune...
Do you know of anyone that has a STI with nitrous that has been succesful? I hope to touch real low 12's with a 50 shot but maybe this is asking for to much, but then again who really knows?
Padge 02-26-2005, 09:52 AM im sure that the car will take a 50 shot with very little trouble at all. Just like you said before, get some step1 or step2 colder plugs and then ensure you have at least 93 octane.
Also if you are doing NX, why not just start with a 35 shot on the stock ECU?
Good luck!
STiTuner 02-26-2005, 10:08 AM Thanks for the info V6TurboTA, I actually probably wont run nitrous once i get a bigger turbo until i dont build the motor, I understand i'll definitely need injectors once the turbo is upped but i just wanted to know if i'll need em for the setup i would have now plus the nitrous...

quite hte opposite, once you get the bigger turbo you will want to run nitrous. lag time isn't much fun, I'ld install a switch to have it spray down low before you come into boost.
SINthetic 02-26-2005, 11:34 AM Start with 35 shot and then move to 50 shot. Check your A/F. No reason to be a hero.
Inprogress 02-26-2005, 12:40 PM Ya personally I wanted to start with a 35 shot but the shop was saying that 50 would be ok but i still wanted to post up and see what the general consensus was...Ya I understand I'll need it on a bigger turbo and all but I probably wont use it as I'll be to scared of its affects on the stock block...
And the reason I can't spray just a 35 shot on the Stock ECU is because with the FMIC and intake, i'll need engine managment so the car runs well...
I just wanted to make sure good fuel, and colder plugs with a good tune would be all I would need to run the nitrous safely...
Thanks for all the help, and I will try and run a 35 shot first then go to 50 thanks for all the help...
And also does anyone know what I will need besides a purge kit? I dont want a remote bottle opener because if i get one i'll get in the habbit of probably spraying to much...other then that i am getting a nitrous pressure gauge, but what about a bottle warmer?
Thanks again,
Junaid
STiTuner 02-26-2005, 04:13 PM the genx 2 is probably the most common upselling item with a nitrous kit its got everything:
automatic bottle heater, fuel pressure safety switch, N2O pressure guage, NHRA pressure release fitting, NHRA blowdown tube, Purge Kit, and all the electrical connectors and wire needed to complete the installation.
Inprogress 02-26-2005, 05:32 PM Now I know what a bottle heater, gauge, and purge kit do, but what does all the rest of the stuff do?
Fuel Pressure Safety Switch, NHRA Pressure Release Fitting, NHRA blowdown tube??
Thanks for all the help I will defintely look into this kit, and btw how much does the Genx 2 kit cost?

Fuek Pressure Saftey Switch-Monitors the fuel, when the pressure drops to a certain psi, it will turn off the nitrous. A saftey function. But by the time it notices the lack of fuel, the motor is toast anyway.
Pressure Release Fitting/Blowdown tube-It the fitting and tube on the bottle. For what ever reason the pressure is to high in the bottle, the valve releases the pressure. If it didnt the bottle would explode. You wont be able to run at the track with out one.
Call up NX. They are very helpful and take the time to answer questions.
Inprogress 02-26-2005, 09:27 PM Well actually you sure have answered all my questions SINthetic, I really appreciate it a bunch, I will definitely look into the GenX 2 kit and also...
While the bottle is in the trunk, wouldnt it get crazy hot? and isnt that bad?
STi_Guy04 02-26-2005, 09:55 PM :D
ok back to gt4

Getting the bottle hot is a bad thing. That is why the blow down tube is required. I see your in texas. If you are not using the nitrous, take the bottle out of the car. Other wise it would bake in the trunk and making the pressure in the bottle on the dangerous side and would blow off and waste all your nitrous.
burnin4 02-27-2005, 01:34 PM IS THERE ANYONE CURRENTLY RUNNING NITROUS ON THEIR STI? I have been waiting to hear about an STi owner running nitrous on their own STi. Does this person exist? If so, please tell us all about your hands on experience. Thank you!

So if i were to have the blow down tube, would that automatically release pressure if the bottle got to hot if i left it in my trunk? Does that question make sense? i'm not sure if i phrased it correctly...

While I was reading NOS's (Holley) website, I saw they sold blankets which basically stated:
Bottle Blankets
Insulating the bottle helps maintain pressure by keeping heat in the bottle when it's cold, or heat out when it's hot outside.
Wouldnt that also help me if I were to leave my bottle in the trunk on a hot day? And is it hard to take the bottle out and so on?

Yeah what he said
SINthetic 02-27-2005, 07:34 PM So if i were to have the blow down tube, would that automatically release pressure if the bottle got to hot if i left it in my trunk? Does that question make sense? i'm not sure if i phrased it correctly...
You are correct. But all the nitrous will have been relased from the bottle. You woul have to get a new pressure fitting. The Gen X 2 kit comes with the bottle warmer, so you dont need that NOS blanket. The area you are in a blanket wont help. Just leave the bottle out of the car on those 100 deg days and dont park in the sun lol.
Inprogress 02-27-2005, 09:29 PM Is it easy to take the bottle in and out?
blinguskahn 02-28-2005, 05:17 AM Contact Kingpin, they have given me breat advice on n2o for my application.
