View Full Version : 2 dealers that will take your car for a ride
WolfInSheepsCLothing 02-26-2005, 08:27 PM All I gotta say is that I highly recommend for you guys to bring your valet key to the dealership when you go in for oil changes or other services. I was in the showroom staring at the 2005 STi while those lot boys added almost half a mile to my car when I went in for an oil change, meanwhile the service area was less than 50 yards away. I know its not that much, but he could've launched my car at 7K and hammered it into 2nd while he does his usual 1/4 mile run and I'd never know it. This was at Exclusively Subaru in Ontario, CA.
I was following an M3 on the freeway on my way to Franks Irvine Subaru in Irvine, CA. He ended up going the same way I was, parked the car in the service area. The driver was one of the dealership employees! That clearly wasn't his car as he carried an invoice back to the office... I later watched two other employees take out a black wrx, then a blue one after they washed them. Both cars were modded with loud exhausts, so it was easy to hear the cars maxed out in 1rst and 2nd gears, and a little in 3rd on a city street, 40mph zone. I've been there twice, the other time, I saw them take out only one car.
What a let-down, people can't be trusted, I guess it's time to start doing my own work on the car...
WinglessSTi 02-26-2005, 08:29 PM change your own oil..changing oil on your sti is the easiest thing eva takes afew minutes..and try and do as much of your own work as possible..including warranty work....dont give those hacks a chance!
Uncle Scotty 02-26-2005, 08:54 PM ....all ya gotta do is make it crystal clear that YOU will accompany ANY employee that drives your car off property, for any reason...make sure everyone in the service dept. knows this UP FRONT....and that you will tolerate NO kiddie, cream jeans, joy-rides in YOUR car.
....and don't let them even TRY to tell you 'NO'.....
The M3 at Irvine Subaru is owned by one of the employees (unless it was sold already). He is trying to sell it at the dealership. When I was looking at LGTs there, I got to talking to the guys brother (who is a salesman). Just FYI.
WolfInSheepsCLothing 02-26-2005, 09:50 PM ok thanks ktm, i was wondering why he was driving it so slow. even though its hard to believe a guy that works there could afford that kind of car... must be slangin' !! just kidding

I find it hard to believe that they chose your car to beat on, and then did it for less than a half mile? If I was going to joy ride a car it'd be a lot further than that.
Did you ask them where the car went? If their behavior bothers you, do some of your own work. But a WRX is not an exotic, and it's not made of glass; it'a not worth getting all upset about.
Porter 02-27-2005, 01:09 AM No kidding.
OMG! THEY MIGHT HAVE SPOOLED THE TURBO AT 12MPH!
edaniele1212 02-27-2005, 11:19 AM all I have to say is "Ferris Buler's Day Off"
MomoWRX 02-27-2005, 03:58 PM Don't be so skeptical....My dad use to work for Ferrari/Maserati dealer and he told me that they would wind the ____ out of the cars. Then again that is a ferrari they were driving and not a WRX. It wouldn't surprise me tho

I take care of my car, on a day off I've spent as much as 3 hours cleaning, waxing and detailing it. You know anyone else that vacuum's the ceiling of their car?
I don't launch/race/beat it up so I'm annoyed to think that someone else did it just because they had the chance. Maybe it was because I gave that punk a prolonged "look" when I saw the way he was looking at my girlfriend...
RexyGirl 02-28-2005, 12:55 AM Did you ever notice that when you sign the repair order for them to work on your car, you are authorizing them to take the vehicle for a test drive? Sometimes these test drives are to duplicate a problem and other times they are to make sure everything is okay with the car after they work on it.
Say they did an oil change and rotated your tires...when the tech took the car our for a drive he noticed there was tire noise and brings it to your attention. If he hadn't taken it out, you would be pulling back in the service drive complaining "that noise wasn't there when I brought it in."
It is CUSTOMARY for most dealerships to take vehicles out on a test run, usually a few miles to make sure everything is okay with your car. If your prefer to go with them, that is fine, but remember, you authorize them to do it when you sign the repair order.
I am sure they were not out joyriding in your car....if so, they would take it for more than 1/2 mile!!
And in reference to the other cars they supposedly "maxed out in 1,2 and 3rd gear," how do you know why they were driving it? Maybe they were duplicating a customers concern and making sure everything was alright with the car...maybe it was a dealership car or one of the employees owns one? Who knows? If you feel that strongly about it, tll them you want to go with them when they take the car off property.
RexyGirl 03-10-2005, 06:52 PM Oh, and one more thing..
How is just giving them your valet key going to prevent them from driving your car???
jetfan2207 03-10-2005, 07:30 PM A lot of dealer employees drive the dealer's cars like that. Whenever I see a plate number and it says "Used Car Dealer, or New Car Dealer" on the bottom of the plate I stay away from them on the road. When I was at the car wash I saw a brand new C230 Kompressor Benz (no big bucks, but still a new car) pull in from the street and floored it to the back of the car wash (where the cars go in) then slammed on the brakes as he got close to the other cars waiting like he was an F1 driver. When I got out of my car I took a peak at his car and saw, Globe Motors (a NJ Benz dealer) with the "New car dealer" plate on it then saw the 22 year old kid sitting behind the wheel. Needless to say I will never buy a car from there.

dealership MECHANICS are the ones that drive the cars after, for example: turbo/suspension/brake installs. but not oil changes, tire rotations/installs, and especially not the stupid lot boys that pull your car up to you after they wash it.
I was under the impression that the valet key would act as a rev limiter, putting a fuel cut at 3-4K rpm. but i guess not. next time i go to a dealership i will simply switch my map on the accessport to valet mode.
you're just like my girlfriend, you two insist on being right (considering your last post). props to you for your minor correction, you may treat yourself to a cookie, couple of frosted doughnuts, maybe a few pints of double chocolate ice cream...
just be careful, low fat is your friend, carbs are the enemy...
tom@kartboy 03-10-2005, 11:45 PM why not do the oil changes yourself? the subie has to be one of the easiest cars to change the oil on.
FYI i have no problem taking my car to a dealership to be worked on,BUT i do all the work myself :)
Tom

I actually re-read the post and realized I missed that part...
Oh, and all the things listed above sound like what I had for desert last night, not low-fat.....I'm pregnant...(maybe that has something to do with the attitude too, )
No flame meant, just re-read the post and didn;t understand
narenji 03-11-2005, 08:32 PM OR, you could just put your cobb accessport to valet mode (3200 rpm rev limit, no boost control), and let them work on your car in that mode. i've driven the car in that mode, and it works very well. It's driveable, but not much fun at all.
i hate exclusively subaru with a passion. they hate the new breed of performance subarus. they're used to elder folk coming with their cars from mt.baldy, big bear and blindly handing over $40 for an oil change. if they could, they would refuse to do oil changes on modified cars, no matter how trivial the modification.
i haven't had any issues w/ irvine, but i'd put it in valet mode if i give it to any dealer.
