I cleaned mine today. My car has over 65k miles and MAF sensor was never cleaned until today. On the side facing intake housing, it was covered with thin layer of oil while other side was clean. I have a feeling that the oil came from use of K&N panel filter.

What's usual symptom of having dirty MAF sensor?

Shouldn't thin layer of oil affect the way MAF sensor reads creating undesired operational condition?

No, that's from blowby out of the PCV system. Don't worry about it. Cleaning the MAF is not a regular maintenance item, however many have benefitted from doing so. The danger lies in damaging it during the cleaning process.

Radio shack sells a residue free sensative electronics cleaner.

Used it on my LS1's MAF when they got some oil on them- worked pretty good. You DON'T want to touch or brush the wires with anything- I just sprayed it over them then let it dry before re-installing. Again- the key is residue free. Many electronics cleaners include some "protectant"...and that's bad.

Noticed starting car is easier. No more bogging in first gear. I have a feeling that sensor was covered with oil from K&N panel filter. I remember spraying excessive amount of oil.

are you saying that there's something wrong with cleaning them (assuming you do it properly)?

'cuz ime it DOES do something positive for the car, and so far no ill effects.

they get dirty, even with a stock air filter on. it just takes more miles.

any kind of dirt degrades the performance.
