View Full Version : Aw crap! Cross-threaded a stud

I cross-threaded one of my front wheel studs, probably last week when I was doing a tire/wheel swap in a dark parking lot with a cordless impact wrench :furious: . I discovered it a couple of days ago when I was swapping tires again for ice racing. I turfed the lug nut that was on there and managed to get a new one on, but in looking at the stud, it's definitely cross-threaded for about the first 1/4-1/8 inch (maybe more since I had to force the new lug-nut on).

Anyway, how hard is this to fix? One suggestion was to try and re-tap the stud. All I know is that replacing the stud as a DIY project will probably involve a sledgehammer and some cringing.

M12x1.25.....I'd try that first....then replacing it....and it isn't too bad a job...replacing a stud....as long as you are aware that the ABS tone ring is an expensive part to replace if you bork THAT while trying to get the stud out/in ;)

cross threads are better than no threads! :D

But seriously, pretty easy to change, you wont really need a sledge to knock it out, just a nice size hammer.
