View Full Version : Proper Impreza etiquette
Mike Smith 07-18-2001, 06:51 AM Since most Impreza buyers are just looking for a reliable, economical car, I am hesitant to wave or flash my lights at anything other than RSs and WRXs. If they do so first, I am happy to acknowledge them, but I find most of them barely realize there's another CAR on the road, let alone what kind it is. So please don't be offended if you're driving a Brighton, L or Outback Sport and I don't wave first - I'm just getting tired of the strange looks from the "average" Impreza owner.
Any other thoughts on this deep subject?:)
Dirty Old Man 07-18-2001, 07:14 AM I know what you mean... here in Indiana, there is probably a 50:1 ratio of people driving subies compared to people that understand my car. They wouldn't even know that I had a subaru if I didn't have it plastered all over my windshield and side windows!!
SureGrap 07-18-2001, 09:30 AM I agree with you 100%. It's frustrating when you look over at someone with an Outback or L and give them a nod or wave and they slow down and change lanes. I have had good luck with RS and WRX drivers, but have given up on the rest of them. I know there are guys here with L's and wagons and Outbacks. What kind of response do you get from other RS/WRX drivers? Nods, waves or just ignored?
-Brian
Tuning Factory Inc. 07-18-2001, 09:39 AM What's an outback? :)
To be perfectly honest with you I don't notice Subaru's unless they are a WRX or 2.5RS. So sorry to anyone with an OutbackL thing that waves and doesn't get a response because I'm oblivious.
JenisonWRX 07-18-2001, 09:46 AM I have yet to see another subaru owner reconize my car...
Usually the ones who do are in Minivans...and they all turn around and just stare...and its mostly 16-25 year olds...
if I get a look from old people is most likely followed with the mouthing 'SLOW DOWN YA CRAZY HOOLAGIN!' as they shake their fist at me.
eh, I've run into some RS and WRX owners that thought I was wierd for randomly talking to them in parkinglots..
it might be because I choose to speak in 3rd person..
but who knows.
A Random Encounter with Fishguy:
Hey there fellow Subie owner... Jim likes your car... Jim would like to get to know you better... how about you give Jim your phone number...
Hmmm... yes I could see how disconcerting that would be... I've met you! ;)
-Nick
Martin Ritchie 07-18-2001, 09:55 AM Yeah, the RS and WRX's always wave. Others stare or ignore. A guy who works at a drugstore just down the street just got a TS Wagon, still has temp tags. I parked my WRX Wagon right beside it and went in to buy a few things. The guy checked me out and was looking at my car but never said a word. Hoodscoop envy!
suby ej25 07-18-2001, 09:55 AM i usually flash most subaru's that i notice....but half the time the only ones that respond are the rs or wrx owners...but it's still all good

Actually, the RS and WRX are so rare around here I've only seen a couple and they were too far away to acknowledge. Such is life in Hickland:p
My wife did have another RS wave to her while she was driving my car, but she didn't figure out what was going on until it was too late to respond:(
rogue 07-18-2001, 10:31 AM We're waist-deep in Outbacks and other Legacy wagon-types hauling groceries and midget soccer teams around here. I owned an Outback for two years, and after seeing only old folks and moms driving them for a while, even *I* stopped noticing.
An RS would always catch my eye, but I wouldn't be surprised when they didn't notice me.
With the WRX, it's a whole new ballgame. I've HEARD about people "getting comments on their car" before, but to live it...
Now when I see the occasional RS or WRX, they damn well notice my Rally Blue ass!
mad-dog999 07-18-2001, 10:34 AM No love from me, I mostly just smile when I see one. That is if I see one, eh fishy? ;)
The only recognition I've gotten is from 2 older gentleman walking circles around the car when I got out of work (trust me, it's not a good feeling at 9:30PM in a dark parking lot), and a yellow ITR owner leaving a note in my window.
eheh.. close nick..
but I prefer to use Fishguy while in public.
actually yesterday sitting at an intersection I had a kid run into traffic to my car and ask me if this was one of those new GSX's.. in the span of a red light I tried to explain that the car he was thinking of was a WRX.. but this was a 2.5RS.
I think I confused him more..
Mike Smith 07-18-2001, 10:43 AM Wow -
Nick and Fishguy responding to my post. I am honored.:)
Edit: Too bad I can't freakin' spell:o Must have rattled me to have so much attention:p
lucien2 07-18-2001, 10:49 AM I've given up in the Outback. I thought the bike rack, the SCOA sticker and the Scooby Doo sticker would help, but it hasn't. Never get a wave back because they never even registered a Soob in their heads.
In the GT it is a little bit better, but still get the "Oh, it's a Legacy, eeewww...." kinda thing. Did nod to a WRX that recognized it and waved back, twice in the last month. So I got that goin' for me, which is nice... :p
kbonwrx 07-18-2001, 11:01 AM Seems to me that WRX owners are something of an exclusive club. I also own a Miata, and we have the Miata "wave" which we take great joy in. There's actually a switch on the dash that raises and lowers the headlights (barn doors) which qualifies as a unique salute to other MX5 owners. As far as it goes for me, I know that in my town right now there are only 5 WRX, all sedans, so I'll likely notice them and give them a wave, but that's it - sorry to all you Outback and Forester owners!
8Complex 07-18-2001, 11:15 AM I run into owners around here all the time, but they're usually just RS's or WRX's and I know most of them already. *shrug*
I notice other Subaru, just Outbacks and Foresters though... Legacy's are just invisable (but look damn good!).
I'll reply to anything.. proven fact..
heh.
scoobagenie 07-18-2001, 11:29 AM when i was drove my previous car, a 97 OBS, i always waved to other OBSs and usually got a wave back! i guess it was an OBS connection going on...
Corvettes are like that along with many other cars..
with out fail if I pass a corvette when I've got my dad's car.. I get a wave or a flash.
RidinLow 07-18-2001, 11:38 AM There's so many 2.5RS's up here that I don't even bother waving anymore. They're either driven by old women in their 50's or by young punks. I saw one kid with a 99 RS working on it in his driveway, so I slowed & gave him a thumbs up, but he just stared blankly at me.
silverSurfer 07-18-2001, 11:42 AM Garrick, would that happen to be our friend the redneck?
Zahnster 07-18-2001, 11:48 AM I plan to wave to any Subaru with a hood scoope or of the new body style sedan/wagon. I think this covers all Impreza variations(except the L, which is virtually non-existant).
On the amazingly rare occasion I see a verified 2.5RS or WRX, I'm normally too shocked to wave. Normally they don't wave either.
Kimbie 07-18-2001, 11:57 AM I am pretty used to the fact that most Impreza L's and Legacy L's would rather ignore me than say hi. But yesterday was different. I was on Mercer on my way to get on I-5 when the driver of an Impreza L Wagon yelled through his window "NICE CAR!!!"
I of course giggled like a school girl and rolled down my passenger side window. When we pulled up to a light I told him he should race the wagon, he said he would if he knew where to get mods. So I told him about this board and pnwsec.org.
I thought it was neat and wierd at the same time.
K
RidinLow 07-18-2001, 11:58 AM Chris, no, this is some other punk high school kid.
skyhigh420 07-18-2001, 12:18 PM I don;t wave or do anything special unless it is a WRX or 2.5rs. I find that all the other driver(no offence) are oblivious to the other subies out there and are usually, note usually, older people who give you funny looks when you do wave!
ferretboy 07-18-2001, 12:34 PM Hmmmm I was just talking about this with one of my friends, and he said "that's so cool how when you see another SUBARU you guys say hello to each other." I then told him that many times I have flashed or gave a thummbs up and got no response. I was even chastised for flashing my lights at someone a while back..., I know I drive a Forester, but hey...tell me they don't know what that is?? I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks about this topic. It is kinda cool how we consider other SUBURII (plural) part of the family. So...if any of you are from the L.A. area and happen to see a black Forester with pink starcluster,Rallispec exhaust (shiny),ISR decal and country music emanating from the sunroof driving around..do say hello :D I can't help but notice my svelte little brethren in your neato 2.5's and wrx's.
~ferretboy signing off
PhlypSide 07-18-2001, 02:58 PM I too, only flash the headlights or wave at WRXor 2.5RS cars. It would seem that the other subie drivers are just oblivious and just bought the subaru because it's a good AWD car :)
The coolest is when you see another WRX in the exact same color going the opposite direction on a two lane road. (I flashed the brights and waved, the other guy nodded and smiled back).
It's definitely cool :) Its the same way with my wife's car (Miata).
lateRZ
Darwin 07-18-2001, 03:42 PM I don't get much love from New Style owners lately. GC8 body RSs almost always wave, but I guess the popularity and bigger run of the 2002 has all these people who don't know what to do when I wave at em. =P
Did have a good run with a silver WRX sedan the other month down 680 and Mission, though. :D
grimlock 07-18-2001, 03:54 PM I've had really good luck with the few SVXen I've met on the highways, too...
remarcable 07-18-2001, 04:05 PM I've stopped waving at outback/forester/L model scoobies and the only WRX/2.5RSs I have seen on the road have been at scoobie meets.
Oh well.
fungo phil 07-18-2001, 04:15 PM Hey I'm a 2.5 TS Sport Wagon owner and in my daily commute from Edmonds to Bellevue and back if I see any of "youse guys and gals" I'll give you a wave. It feels good to be recognised. I would be driving a WRX but after 30 years of marriage, and the wife needing to drive the car too, I had to settle for the TS Wagon. I know,
OldWRXr 07-18-2001, 04:41 PM A large % of the time no one waves. Most of the time I don't see any Subie until it's too late to wave.
There was this one time I waved to a white RS owner, but won't wave to a white RS in this area again. It was this blue/grey haired serior who may be into stalking! :D

uhh, isn't flashing illegal? Man, that's pretty perverted, I'll be sure to avoid the nakid subaru drivers.

Uh aren't Outbacks Legacies? And Forresters? What are those? I don't even know what those look like. Are those the minivans?
Dan who knows nothing about Subaru's at all except for WRX's.
Mr Cheese 07-18-2001, 10:45 PM I dont wave, honk, or even glance at the driver of any subaru besides a RS or WRX
I do excessively honk, wave vigorously, and blind RS and WRX owners often, but they don't even look at me:mad:.......they think its some regular sedan
j_grimaldi 07-18-2001, 11:07 PM Whenever I see another WRX or RS I always speed up or slow down to acknowledge them. We have a comrodary amongst each other. It really bothers me when I pull up to someone with a WRX or RS and doesnt even care to recognize me. They just bought the car because they saw the commercial.
kevinsUBARU 07-18-2001, 11:14 PM I drive a L, and can get a look from someone once in a blue moon. The only people I see driving RS's around these parts are old people with gray hair:rolleyes:
jim-bob 07-18-2001, 11:23 PM well, it's odd. the most responses i ever got from other sube drivers were back when i had my old rusty gl wagon. other people in beat-up subarus would wave back, and it was all kind of cool.
then, in '96, i moved up to a legacy brighton wagon (the gl had finally succumbed to rust death) and became all but invisible to other subaru owners, especially later, when the rs came out.
now i've got a wrx wagon, and still get no response from other sube drivers.
it must be my breath or something.
Overtime 07-18-2001, 11:29 PM What's wrong with punk high school kids, yo? I's gonna cut you up if you be hatin' on us.
~representing for all the o. g. punk high school kids out there.
Giamilton 07-18-2001, 11:40 PM The same day I got my WRX I was driving and saw a scooby going the opposite way I honked and waved and my wife was like "who was that?"
LOL
I said a 2.5 RS and she just looked at me like I was road raged or something :)
it's scooby road ruvvin *say like Scooby hisself*
not rage
WonderDude 07-18-2001, 11:44 PM imprezas are totally rare here. really, i don't see any on the road.
i do pass an outback or two once in a while. the funny thing is, is that mom or dad driving is usually cruising down the slow lane with their full headlights and foglights on staring at the road ahead. the teens riding along, however, crane their necks and gawk when i whiz by. i always see them jabbering and pointing in the rearview! :)
Giamilton 07-18-2001, 11:47 PM Nice color wonderdude, black is a bitch to keep clean, but it sure is pretty when it is.
Just keep buying silver WRX's people, help make wonder's and mine rare :)
rbehny 07-19-2001, 02:23 AM the only wrx's in town are the ones on the dealers lot. They don't know the difference between a wrx and a ts. They just think one's more expensive then the other. But i try to wave when i see subaru's that look different than stock.:D
scaryfastskier 07-19-2001, 02:39 AM I've given up initiating the wave...I waved to a 2.5 that was black like my WRX trying to be friendly...so he turned left on a red light, swerved into oncoming traffic and tried to race me. Since I was driving it home from the dealership for the first time, I just about crapped myself cause I was sure a crash was gonna go down for sure.
Mike Smith 07-20-2001, 06:03 AM When I was growing up, my dad drove MGs, and sports cars would ALWAYS wave to each other - regardless of make. MGs, Triumphs, Porsches, Austin Healeys, Fiats, Alfas, you name it. This would be akin today to Imprezas waving to Civics, Integras, Talon/Eclipses, etc. and vice versa. Could you imagine?
DuneHopper 07-20-2001, 05:06 PM Us putt-putt OBS'ers get no respect (sniff).
Oh well, most of them are driven by old ladies around here anyway.
Pongo 07-20-2001, 06:53 PM fun topic,...
here's my .02, even if it is a bit late.
I love driving cars that stand out from the crowd a little, and I have found that these usually have their own little ways of greeting one another,... I think it's great to say,... "hey cool car" to someone driving the same thing you are.
Here's the cars I've had that have had these little rituals.
My very first car,... a VW Super Beetle Underpowered as hell, but I never went by another bug that didn't wave back,... most of the time everyone else (non vw's) waved too! I'm sure the new beetles still get this to some extent.
My 94 Miata,... I loved this car, and most other Miata owners would give a thumbs up or headlight flip,... cool stuff.
my 96 BMW,... well ok,.. I can't think of a single time where another BMW owner exchanged waves,... oh well.
And now with my '02 WRX Blue Wagon,..... so far (After about 3 weeks) I've seen a few other WRX's, but haven't been in position to wave,... exchanged waves at an Autocross last Sunday,...(No I didn't race it,... yet,... still in the break-in) also I came across an RS on the freeway going the other way,... hands flailing out the window at me. As for most of the other foresters, outbacks, my wife in her "L", I could just as well be invisible as these people don't seem to see anything!
Troy
Us putt-putt OBS'ers get no respect (sniff). Oh well, most of them are driven by old ladies around here anyway.
Same Here. I DO Wave to any other Subaru's no
matter what kind they are not too many waves back though. So kay :)
g6 g6 Racing Team (http://members.home.net/g6racer/)
Choose 07-20-2001, 08:19 PM I only get waves from RS's and WRX's!
But what i found really cool was when a Silver WRX (same as mine) coming towards me down in the opposite lane. We both waved while looking and drooling at each others cars!!!!!!
:p
lark6 07-20-2001, 09:40 PM I wave to WRXers but they don't wave back. Guess I'm too square physically (and the car is too). Have had nice conversations w/other Forester owners and a few RSers. Legacy drivers seem to be the least enthusiastic of the lot. Even drivers of old school Subies get into it more.
Ed
PS: ferretboy - PM'ed you.
COwannago 07-21-2001, 09:37 PM Around where I live there are a bunch of Legacy L's and Outbacks, but the only people to wave at me was one guy in a Subie Brat that was painted urban camouflage, and some old guy driving an old Subie GL wagon. One kid tried to race me in an old Legacy sedan that sounded like it had straight pipes and had a BMW hood logo on it's trunk, I felt dirty looking at that car.
Nick C.
Horde 07-21-2001, 10:25 PM I drove next to a black 2.5 TS wagon for about 3 miles today and I don't think the guy driving even knew that my car was almost like his. There's probably some Subaru buyers just looking for good, practical, affordable, and capable transportation - they probably don't care what anyone else is driving. You could call them the Point A to Point B people.:)
jk147 07-21-2001, 11:56 PM Not everyone is an enthusiast, if someone comes up to me in a wine store and start talking about vintage wines.. I will probably just give him blank stares as well. But I do talk/wave to whoever wants to talk and wave at my wrx :D
Skylab 07-22-2001, 12:28 AM "Save the wave!"
Skylab™
*acknowledges all Scoobies*
WRXwannbe 07-22-2001, 06:57 AM I am a die hard impreza fan. Yes, I own a L, but I pretend te only difference between me and the RS is 20 ponies, nothing more. So if you see a lowered L with gold RS rims and it's drifting here and there, wave to me I will give you a honk of a lifetime.
Technic 07-23-2001, 01:35 AM I am looking forward to waving to other subaru owners, when I do it now they just think I'm crazy :)
This is a big thing with jeeps, we have a whole hierarchy involved (see link)
http://dirtroad.com/jeepwave/
Maybe the i-club should set up a similar hierarchy, not necessarily so specific. The basic premise of the wave is the lesser vehicle initiates waves to the more hardcore vehicle. The hard part is determining which vehicle is more hardcore. Of course the 360 would be the most hardcore vehicle and everyone would have to wave to it first. :)
Something to think about (or you can just wave to every subaru, that works with much less thinking involved)
edkwon 07-23-2001, 02:09 AM I'm noticing more and more 2.5 RS here in Indy, but there doesn't seem to be that friendly solidarity i was hoping to expect. Once tho i did run into this guy who drove a Silver 2000 RS and he was checking out my car and we started chattin, pretty cool =)
Ed
Hiroki Tada 07-23-2001, 03:45 AM man.. i envy the friendliness that impreza owners have.. everytime i flash or wave a tl owner i either get stared or a flip of the finger.. never got waved back b4.. maybe its b/c tls are too damn common..
time to trade in!!
SubaTubaru 07-23-2001, 03:47 AM yea... i always honk and flash when i see someone!! hope someday someone doesnt get mad and like follow me home.. lol well if they aren't an enthusiats good luck to them keeping up
Hyperdash 07-23-2001, 06:19 AM I just got my WRX yesterday, today when I was on the road a girl on the opposite side of the road had a RS of the same color and we highbeamed each other. fun!
I waved to a WRX wagon the other day, but he ignored me. That's when I remembered I was in my wife's Legacy wagon. Was this reverse snobbery?
Martin Ritchie 07-23-2001, 02:38 PM Deke,
Same thing happened to me when I was driving my wife's Legacy Wagon on 23 north of Monroe. Maybe it was the same snob. Let's get him!
Greg Sharpe 07-23-2001, 03:46 PM I pulled up to an intersection, after driving a particularly twisty mountain road, and a Miata (caged) pulled up on the other side. I knew he was going to go by me to run the twisty road too, so when he came across the intersection I nodded at him. He bothered to slow down, nod (smirk a bit), and then proceed on his twisty way. It was cool because he saw that I had just come off the road too. Kinda like fast road afficionado's saying "Was Up?" :)
tsfxRS 07-23-2001, 04:13 PM Before I got my 98 RS I was driving a jeep wrangler and let me tell you that was one big family. If you DIDNT wave at someone else driving one you were at outcast. I've had my 98 RS for maybe a week now and I think I have had more people stop me at gas stations and just ask *** it was and whether it was the "supercharged" one they saw on commercials. I assume they meant turbo lol. I just respond nope no turbo yet. My car is Brilliant Red, and I stuck a yellow banner on the top of the windshield promoting my friends car audio shop. It sticks out like a sore thumb but so far only the cops and a car load of 15 yr old girls have noticed it.
Right now the bra is on it until i get a new bumber cover the old ones been hit :) (before i got it)
I never get to be a part of this wave community because every single time I see another RS or WRX I'm not driving my own car!!! :( I'm always riding bitch in someone elses ride but I still wave and they just look at me like I'm nuts or something. huh...go figure.
Poppa smurf 07-23-2001, 06:17 PM Before I got my 98 RS I was driving a jeep wrangler and let me tell you that was one big family. If you DIDNT wave at someone else driving one you were at outcast
I too drove a 98 TJ and a 90 YJ until i bought my RS. It seemed like the wave thing was dying out since alot of the people are buying the new TJ since it has most of the comfort that people were willing to forgo in the YJ's. alot of impreza owners had jeeps previous to their RS though. pretty cool
NezorF 07-23-2001, 09:35 PM When ever I get the chance most the time I try and wave. If I can't help my self from staring to much at the other car. I never really get to see my car from a out side cammera view. Besides when I go by those nice reflective windows on buildings. But hey what can I say I really like the Impreza.
JJenkins 07-25-2001, 10:43 PM First of off i am one of the few who bought the regular impreza b/c i needed a car, it was only after owning it did i see what i had in my posession. Since i realized what i own i have been working to upgrade small cheap pieces.
Noone around here notices the car you drive, i too live in Hickville. But i did see a grandma drivign a WRX, adn that just broke my heart b/c I don't have one yet and i doubt she uses the power it has b/c she was drivin awefully sloooowww.
