i know the trannies are the same as far as bolting up but what else needs to be changed to put an 03 tranny into a 98 rs?

Rear diff, for one.

i guess that would include rear axels also? are the clutches both the same style operation?

Clutches are different, I believe RS is push, WRX is pull.

DOnt know spline config on axles, try search?

Just use your RS clutch and stuff. Make sure to use your RS starter too.

so i can use my clutch with the wrx tranny?

raydadick

and why the starter? it will be a wrx engine also

to put a wrx powertrain into a RS, you need to be sure that the wrx tranny come with the clutch and the clutch cylinder. connect that to your oem hydraulic system and it will work

this swap is easy to do, very well documented, however, if you don't find anything you need used, the cost rise quicly when you need to buy brand new parts.

you need wrx engine, tranny, rear diff, front crossmember, ECU, wiring harness, fuel pump controler and fuel pump (or an aftermarket one) etc

i have found the engine write ups but none about the tranny in my searches over the past few days. dont know if i am not using the right phrases to earch for or what

it will bolt up fine
use:
wrx tranny
wrx fly wheel
wrx clutch
wrx slave cylinder
RS master cylinder
RS/wrx clutch cable
either shift linkage
either trans mount
if the RS axles work use um the splines are the same wrx sedan axles *may* longer

if the RS transmissions is in good shape by all means keep it it is a 4.11 and will be much much more fun to drive, you will how ever need a stiffer clutch a rs clutch won't hold the power

flywheels/clutches/transmissions need to be the same either push or all pull style you can't mix and match componest between the two

to use the RS tranny
put RS fly wheel on ej20 get new clutch and bolt away

so my options are to use my tranny and a new rs clutch and go or use the wrx tranny with its clutch and convert the hydraulic system over?
i was thinking to use the wrx tranny because the car already seems a little high strung on the highway, 3100rpm at 70mph gets a little loud.
if i keep my tranny (seems simpler), and get the type ra gears later, what goes into that swap?

Jaxx

mmm no not exactly
the RS is a hydro clutch ready all 2.5s are
you will need an uprated clutch stock RS clutchs won't hold ;)

keep the RS tranny -sell the WRX tranny -buy a (push style) lightweight flywheel and stronger clutch

what is a good cost effective clutch to look for?

I was happy with my exedy organic clutch.

raydadick
03-03-2005, 11:12 PM
what kind of cost?

Eby

I think it was 300 something for the exedy. I wouldn't spend money on a lightweight flywheel(they actually make launches more difficult, if that matters to you).

May be more cost effective to use the WRX tranny, if you've got the whole wreck you have everything you need there.

im using sti 6speed tranny with 6mt clutch and flywheel and everything, basicly dropped sti engine and 6speed into my RS and attached the clutch line up to it from the RS. Do i need to use any wrx/sti clutch master or slave cylinders or anything? Car works fine, but clutch seems really soft compared to a stock sti, and theres no way the clutch is roasted.

If you're concerned about how highway cruising, then the WRX tranny/diff might be a better option. As they said, the RS tranny with it's 4.11 rear diff will give you a little more pull off the line, but it won't get as good mileage on the highway.

If you think you're gonna upgrade this thing, keep your power goals in mind now. You may need an upgraded clutch either way, and it may play into what clutch you choose. There's a few different choices from some of the manufacturers, for various power levels.

i wont be going over 250-300 hp any time soon.
i will prob just go with my tranny for an easier install.
anyone konw if the brake master cylendars are compatable?

Dont put in the WRX tranny unless your current one is broken, or a 4eat. The gearing of the RS tranny is much better then that of the WRX. Also the WRX tranny is not any stronger, FYI.

i realize the trannies are the same as far as durability, i was wondering about how easy it is to actually do cause i like the idea of one with 16k rather than 116k miles.
better gearing is a matter of opinion also. i kind of want better gear for highway driving but dont think im going to bother with the trouble of installing it, especially since i can sell the wrx one for more.

Use your RS' transmission. Put in an Exedy clutch and a lightened flyewheel.

I did my swap at 100k and kept my RS transmission. 1.25 years and 31k later my transmission is still fine. I'm running the Exedy clutch with a Fidanza 9.5lb flywheel and the car is amazing. I am also Ecuteked and am running a V7 IC, VF23 and absolutely no cats with a 3.125" turboback. I have yet to experience any issues what-so-ever,

Additionally, I do NOT baby my car at all. I hold an instructor certification and a race license and I use the car in HPDE's (group 4), Autocross (national level events), Ice racing and hillclimbs and a lot of spirited driving.

Sell the WRX transmission and diff to some WRX n00b who can't drive and has a blown transmission.

how much power are you getting out of that?
are you going to bring it down when you come to help me with my wiring?

I'm not sure as I have yet to put it on a Dyno. I'm guessing that it's somewhere around 260-280 WHP. As for driving to Cincinnati that's a no as fuel costs are too high and a plane ticket is much easier, cheaper and much less travel time than driving.

what are some things, as far as basic upgrades, that i should look into while the engine is out of the car? ex. up/down pipe

Eby
03-09-2005, 01:12 AM
I'd say definitely do the uppipe, that can be a little bit of a PITA with the engine in the car, and it's a very basic affordable mod with good gains. After that, it just depends on how far you want to go. Turbo, injectors, engine mounts, clutch, all things that would be easier to do outside of the engine bay or during the install now, rather than taking things apart to do it later.

Downpipe is not difficult to switch out on the car, just cost you a little bit of time and new gaskets to do later.
